Toledo Mayor Gives Marines The Boot

This seems totally unfortunate, and totally unnecessary.

A company of Marine Corps Reservists received a cold send-off from downtown Toledo yesterday by order of Mayor Carty Finkbeiner.

The 200 members of Company A, 1st Battalion, 24th Marines, based in Grand Rapids, Mich., planned to spend their weekend engaged in urban patrol exercises on the streets of downtown as well as inside the mostly vacant Madison Building, 607 Madison Ave.

Toledo police knew days in advance about their plans for a three-day exercise. Yet somehow the memo never made it to Mayor Finkbeiner, who ordered the Marines out yesterday afternoon just minutes before their buses were to arrive.

“The mayor asked them to leave because they frighten people,” said Brian Schwartz, the mayor’s spokesman.

Sounds like the military gave the city plenty of notice, but the Mayor’s office decided to be petulant about it.  As for citizens being “scared,” that certainly could have been alleviated by timely notices in the local media.  Heck, a few curious citizens might have even liked to have observed.

By the way, anyone want to guess which political party this stinker Finkbeiner belongs to?  Here’s a hint: The party mascot is, fittingly, a jackass.

Comments

There are more and more communities in America demonstrating an official policy of calculated disrespect for our military. That too is part and parcel of a society moving into full blown socialism, they must create a widespread discontent and hatred for the military among the general populace. They are also cherry picking liberals within the military to express and spread discontent there.

I do not foresee the Congress ever allowing any legislation to pass that would withhold roads and highways or other federal funds of any state or community demonstrating an official hostilty toward the military.

No matter the age or state of health, for a military man it is always glorious to tilt at windmills, rescue a fair Dulcinea and be a gallant knight in armor in a glorious cause.

Mayor Finkbeiner appears to be a member of some party, but I’m not sure he is being reasonable nor patriotic or even grateful.  Perhaps he is a bit self-centered.

You’d think the city would be happy for the boost to law enforcement that would come from a high visibility action such as this. Perhaps that is why people in the mayor’s office didn’t tell him beforehand, they knew he was a leftarded asshole.

We have cities banning recruiters and urban-preparedness training for the military, providing documentation to illegal aliens, approving gay marriage by municipal ordinance, calling for the arrest of the President and Vice President, supplying needles to heroin addicts, creating sanctuaries for illegals, and allowing - nay! - encouraging anarchy.

At the same time, we have some conservatives calling for the election of Barack ‘Alinsky’ Obama or Hillary ‘Chompsky’ Clinton to the White House rather than support that awful John McCain.  Go figure.

"Here lies, in honored glory, an American soldier, known but to God.”

The stakes are high. Whether the issue is the economy, or energy, or the federal courts or national security, the right answers are coming not from the Democrats, but from the Republicans. The surge of operations that began a year ago is succeeding. The only way to lose this fight is to quit. Richard M. Cheney, Vice President, 30 May, 2008
