Time Magazines Man of the Year is a Kleptocrat

No surprise to anyone except for the tyrant loving Time:

Citing sources inside the president’s administration, Belkovsky claims that after eight years in power Putin has secretly accumulated more than $40bn (£20bn). The sum would make him Russia’s - and Europe’s - richest man.

In an interview with the Guardian, Belkovsky repeated his claims that Putin owns vast holdings in three Russian oil and gas companies, concealed behind a “non-transparent network of offshore trusts”.

Putin “effectively” controls 37% of the shares of Surgutneftegaz, an oil exploration company and Russia’s third biggest oil producer, worth $20bn, he says. He also owns 4.5% of Gazprom, and “at least 75%” of Gunvor, a mysterious Swiss-based oil trader, founded by Gennady Timchenko, a friend of the president’s, Belkovsky alleges.

That one of the hugest thefts in world history but the liberals love him.  But they do hate people that earn their money.

Meanwhile many of Russia’s citizens are living in abject poverty.

That’s Kleptocrat, but otherwise a good find.

Whistler,

I have no love for Putin, but it’s a bit hypocritical for you to say that he didn’t earn his money. He may not have earned it honestly, but who is to be the judge of what is theft and what is venture? He took advantages of opportunities that others didn’t. In fact, he didn’t buy shares of those gas companies with money stolen from Russian citizens, he bought those shares with money stolen from America and the World Bank via the loans-for-shares program.

I’m no fan of such theft, but once again, explain to me how it is different from an American businessman outsmarting his competition and taken its money. (Further note: I have no problem with the way American businessmen do their business, I just don’t like hypocritical logic where one side is good and the other, mirror-image side, is bad just because you don’t like them.)

My point being: Don’t blame the entrepreneur (Putin), blame the system that allows such men to hold power and gives them opportunities to abuse it.

Hairy Polemic - He may not have earned it honestly, but who is to be the judge of what is theft and what is venture?

The disconnect here is nothing short of amazing.

I’m no fan of such theft, but once again, explain to me how it is different from an American businessman outsmarting his competition and taken its money.

The question is how is theft different from outsmarting the competition.

Again, the disconnect is amazing.

Uhuh. I dismiss you too… in even fewer words.

I’ll tell you what “Hairy Polemic” - sometimes you’re right on. Other times you’re out there dancing around in left field.

What’s with the name change? You went from real name and a normal looking face as an avatar to “hairy”. You didn’t look that hairy!

Did you discover the virtues of going anonymous?

Surprise, surprise.

Putin’s riches pale in comparison to what others have made while he has been in office.

Much of the world, including people in the U.S., live in abject poverty while the entire world is manipulated for riches in the oil and war industries.

The Rockefellers are one of the largest shareholders in Time Warner and the Federal Reserve Bank. They, along with other major shareholders of the FRB and the Crown regularly finance Russian oil deals and wars with your tax dollars and what you would call your currency. They do not invest and risk their own money. The message here is, this is how you control a country and get rich. Eliminate freedom and control the press. This has been is happening to you for decades and the process has been accelerated. You will never know how much Bush and Cheney have made while in office.

Rudy Giulani, put into office by the Rockefellers, lived the life of a despot and got rich by using Putin tactics on NYC. Rudy

Though I risk making enemies of you all, I would kindly ask that ews’s conspiracy-theory rant not be taken in the context of my critique of Whistler’s opinion of Putin. This is another matter entirely.

The Rockefellers earned theirm money, Putin stole it using power as the elected leader of Russia.

What’s going to happen to US industry when the global warming extremists like John McCain double the price of electricity?  I would think all these factories will close and set up in countries where they aren’t scared of technology.

Hairy,

I couldn’t disagree more with your assessment of Putin as an “entrepreneur.” But distancing yourself, and your argument, from Ews’ silly paranoid tantrum is perfectly sensible.

... the tyrant loving Time ...

As usual, the wingnuts don’t get it.  Person of the year has nothing to do with “love”:

TIME’s Person of the Year is not and never has been an honor. It is not an endorsement. It is not a popularity contest. At its best, it is a clear-eyed recognition of the world as it is and of the most powerful individuals and forces shaping that world—for better or for worse. It is ultimately about leadership—bold, earth-changing leadership. Putin is not a boy scout. He is not a democrat in any way that the West would define it. He is not a paragon of free speech.

You know what? He’s a thievin’ bastard. But he’s THEIR thievn’ bastard. Let the Russians deal with him- they had a shot at turning their country around and blew it.
And yeah, I realize that generations passed under Soviet rule, and maybe whatever spark of desire for freedom they MAY have had was probably bred out of them. But you could also make the argument that they never had that spark- they went from the Tsars to Communism. Other than keeping him boxed up any acceptable way we can, what else do we do with a cold-blooded ex-KGB agent?
