Tim Robbins’ New Play A Load Of Crap

From Fox News:

Embedded journalists brought the Iraq war live into America's living rooms.

But now, actor and anti-war activist Tim Robbins has written and directed a play depicting his version of what he thinks happened in Iraq.

Robbins, an ardent critic of President Bush, as well as the war, isn't a journalist, nor is he a soldier who has been to Iraq. In fact, he's never been embedded with the troops.

But his play, "Embedded," profiles the journalists who traveled with and reported on U.S. soldiers in Iraq and features the president's war cabinet. It was written in Los Angeles and produced in Hollywood.

Robbins portrays journalists as Pentagon puppets, U.S. soldiers as thieves and killers of innocent women and children, and the Bush cabinet as war mongers willing to start a war to escape the negative publicity of the Enron scandal.

...

"It is not propaganda. It is a voice of dissent, which is different than propaganda," said audience member Kadina Dayal-Halday.

When Laura Israel, another audience member, was asked if she thought the play was accurate, she replied: "Yes, not only on what is going on there, but it also showed how we are being lied to by all the networks."

One person who wasn't convinced by the portrayals was Marine Maj. Rich Doherty.

"It was spun to make it look like that leadership started this war simply for its own political agenda " and that can't be further from the truth," Doherty said.

Doherty, who has a Ph.D. from Berkeley, fought in Iraq and worked alongside several embedded journalists. After the show, which Fox News was not allowed to tape, Doherty discussed the performance with some of the audience and cast members.

"You're not on the ground, there is no historical, no empirical evidence to say...that what you're believing or saying politically (is true)," Doherty said.

"With all due respect sir, a lot of people in this country feel this administration went to this war with an agenda of their own and this play resonates with a lot of people who come to see it," countered V.J. Foster, an actor who plays the character of Col. Hardchannel in the play.

"That is your opinion based on what you saw in the newspaper," Doherty shot back. "I'm giving you an opinion based on what I saw with my boots on the ground and in the sand."

I am not going to try and tell you that the only people who can form an opinion about the war in Iraq are the people who have experienced it first hand. Obviously, I have very strong opinions about the war just like everybody in this nation. Where the line needs to be drawn, however, is when those opinions turn into accusations.

In this play Tim Robbins is accusing the Bush administration of forcing journalists in Iraq to lie. He casts a poor light on the soldiers currently engaged in protecting this country and he brands Bush and his cabinet members as war mongers who invaded Iraq to cover up the Enron scandal. What proof does he have of any of this? Absolutely none.

Which is ok, actually. Tim Robbins is entitled to his opinion. Its his first ammendment right. As a matter of fact, I like Tim Robbins. I especially enjoyed The Shawshank Redemption and Bull Durham. I think that he is a very talented actor and would certainly see movies starring him in the future. The problem is that when it comes to politics he just isn't very smart. He has some extreme views and has absolutely no problem with putting those views right in people's faces. He is also a celebrity which further alienates him from reality, gives him access to the media that most of us don't have and also causes him to be surrounded by so-called "yes men" who would probably agree with him no matter what he says.

That being said, I'm now going to exercise my first ammendment right and say that Tim Robbins is a total, blithering idiot who's perspective on the war in Iraq is skewed by a total inability to grasp reality. When he portrays the Bush administration as "covering up" the truth in Iraq he is giving them far too much credit. Does he really think that our government can intimidate each and every reporter in Iraq, from a variety of countries, into reporting only favorable news about the war? Does he really think that the Bush administration can influence the BBC or Al-Jazeera? In this era of international media such a feat would be impossible. While many media outlets present news with a decided slant, either to the left or the right, I don't think any of them totally misrepresent what they are reporting.

What we need to remember is that Embedded is nothing more than a play. Its a fictional story from the misled mind of the author. Its fine for entertainment but shouldn't be looked to for the truth about the situation in Iraq.

I am a well informed, fairly politically sophisticated person. I am a college graduate and I have a decent contemporary as well as historical perspective of geopolitics. I have not seen the play of which you write, but I can only imagine it’s political slant based on the very public stance taken by Tim Robbins. The play appears to be just another shoot from the lip presentation of the political bigotry the LEFT loves to espouse when they perceive themselves as being out of power. People like Robbins live in their own little ivory tower and think that what they say and do is somehow important to America. Fortunatley, unlike Robbins’ and his allies, most Americans are fair minded individuals who could care less about the trivia that comes from Hollywood. I would think that the war against terror and the sacrifice of our brave men and woman will be honored and remembered much longer than the political smut peddled by Robbins.

So, what?  Tim Robbins is trying to turn this war into another Viet Nam?  Does he really want the public to hate our troops in Iraq and revile them when they return?  Mr. Robbins, you need to learn that spreading lies about people who are fighting on YOUR behalf is not the way to go.  And if I was one of the reporters who had actually been in Iraq with the troops, I would have kicked your ass by now!

Mr. Robbins - let’s see you take that farce of yours outside of La La Land.

Mr. Tim Robbins

My son is 22 years old and serving in the United States Navy.  He serves his country proudly, so that we all may continue to live in a country that allows the comfort of freedom!  My great, great grandfather, my great grandfather, my grandfather and my father all served in our prestigious military.  My father is 81 years old, he was the first of his generation to attend college on a football scholarship.  He was a member of the ROTC in highschool and college.  World War II began while he was in college, so he joined the Army.  Most of his friends joined or were drafted and my father understood what was at risk for our nation.  While in combat he was shot in the leg and eventually lost that leg.  After recovering he returned home and finished his education.  His football career was obviously over and before the war he had been scouted by the NFL.  My father has never complained about anything, he new what the consequences were and proudly defended our country.  I am extremely proud of my father and I saw what bravery and patriotism means through my father!  This play broke my heart...........it made me sad for my father.....for my son..........it made me ask the question......why should my family risk their lives for this kind of freedom?  It’s not worth it....not worth fighting and dying, so actors, activists and the whole bunch can hate and lie so freely!  Mr. Robbins you are shameful and really don’t deserve the luxury of living in our country, but you have the right too..........you have many rights.....and protections.....and liberties thanks to the men and women that have served and DIED in the United States Military on your behalf!  I was a fan and enjoyed both you and Ms. Sarandan’s movies and talents, but something has changed inside of me and I’m not interested in you or your wife’s projects or talents and that makes me sad!  I hope Mr. Robbins will read this e-mail, but I have my doubts........if he is truly interested in what his fans and former fans think about his views, then he will read this and if he doesn’t give a damn.....then I guess he won’t.

It is clear that Tim Robbins is a complete moron. His idealistic views of what is factual or fictional stems from his inability to face the truth. His hatred of President Bush has somewhat clouded his extremely small mind.  Robbins has done more to damage to himself than he is willing to accept. Clearly, he has this delusion of grandeur that his position as an actor automatically makes him an expert on foreign and national affairs. The typical armchair quarterback. Since Robbins has so much time to undermine the current administration and personally attack the military then maybe he ought to run for office. He has levied so much criticism and has not provided a single logical solution to the current war on terrorism. If Robbins thinks that this country is so screwed up, then it is his right to choose to live elsewhere, say for example, China or North Korea.  Let’s see how much freedom of expression you can exercise in these regimes. GET A LIFE ROBBINS. THIS IS AMERICA, THE LAND OF THE FREE AND THE HOME OF THE BRAVE. A concept you have yet to grasp.

I actually saw the play in question...and even though I’m no Tim Robbins fan, I have to say I was shocked at how fair it really was, even for a liberal like Robbins. He really pays tribute to the soldiers out there, and the play itself was humorous and entertaining...not at all like Fox News described it. Kind of makes me question them now. I recommend anyone to see it for themselves. It’s actually a patriotic play in its own way.

From what I’ve heard the biggest problem with the play is that it portrays journalists as taking orders directly from the Bush administration.

I haven’t seen the play, but if this assertion is contained in the play then I don’t see how it can be viewed as patriotic.

When the people fear their government, there is tyranny; when the government fears the people, there is liberty.

just saw the show in nyc with a mixed group. whether pro or anti-war we could all agree on one thing. this show was awful. an amateurish, imbecilic, disjointed, unfunny mess. this sort of thing should be playing in the gym at bennington college. it is not even ready for off, off broadway

There are two people on this page that have actually SEEN the play; one lucidly says that it has its own sense of patriotism, the other is reads like it was written by a frustrated 16-year old on crystal meth.

I choose to take the opinion of the person who has (a) seen the play and (b) can form a coherent thought as one that might be worth considering.

Then again, I imagine most of you have already made up your minds.

Tim Robins, this actor, anti-war activist, writer and ardent critic of President Bush comes back in the public attention with his written and directed play about the Iraq war. But who knows that Robbins is an avid baseball and hockey fan, too? May be he is also a football fan and he looks for football tickets!
