Those Who Can’t Write Rip Off Other People’s Stuff And Repost It As their Own

Take for instance some clown that uses the internet handle Silencedogood over at Comcast.net.
While browsing around the net one day I found one of my articles at a forum called City Hall at Comcast. Now, I’m always flattered when somebody picks up my stuff. I write to be read, after all. That’s the whole point, isn’t it? But I noticed something funny about this one. Not only was there no link to Say Anything, there was no attribution to the site. And further, there was no mention of the original writer. That would be me.
But the part that really got me was the fact that some of the article had been re-worded and that the poster, the above mentioned Silencedogood, had apparently posted it as his own. Curious now – and just a little peeved – I started pulling up this other guy’s posts and lo and behold! There are several more of my articles posted under this guy’s name. And not only had he posted them without attribution, he changed them.
There was the one of my weekly updates about the Peaceful Religion of Peace. He didn’t butcher that one too badly.
There was my column about the fact that 72% of all Israelis approve of using nukes in their defense. He REALLY changed that one, right down to changing my analogy about having a poisonous snake in your house to having a rabid dog in your back yard. Total rip-off.
Oh, and he stole my Brokeback Palestinians column, too. And my column asking why Jews are so hated.
And the one I just wrote about Islam authorizing marriage to an eight year old? He stole that too. And changed it. You can find it here. And while you’re there look and see if he took liberties with your stuff, too.
Evidently he’s a reader of Say Anything. I tried to get onto Comcast to tell him to cut it out but couldn’t get on. Rob couldn’t either. So, after consulting with Rob I’ve decided to leave Silencedogood a message here on Say Anything:
Cut it out, dipstick. What you’re doing is flat out plagiarism. It’s not only ethically and morally wrong – it’s illegal. The stuff I or any other author writes is their intellectual property. You can’t steal it. And I’m real sure I’m not the only one you’re doing it to. I don’t know who you are, but stop it and stop it now.
There. I think that’s clear enough. So when you visit Say Anything to rip off me or someone else I hope you read this.
I hope you liked this column. Have a nice day.

This is probably a good time to remind everybody that it’s always a good idea to attribute another blog via a “hat tip”, if you saw a post there that referenced a news article, whenever you don’t include the other blogger’s text but just their original link.

It’s a good courtesy and also helps everybody in the long run…

  • Bat One

Just like the proverbial “Rules of the Road”, manners matter.

    Silencedgood,

Well Done! Your act of integrity has already been passed on as example to someone else who needed to see first hand how courtesy is supposed to work on the net.

    Welcome aboard!

Well, I went over there to leave a piece of my opinionated mind, but when I realized it was Comcast I had to back down. ( I just spend a few days ridding my pc of some comcrap infiltration), but if the lurking reader does come by again I hope he/she understands the way we feel about people using our words to create their own notorism. < —- (I know it’s not a word, but it fits my usage so it’s a word now) ;-)

  • 2Hotel9

“dipstick”, that about sums that up.

    GregB999,

Click on the link I used in the column, then click on the guy’s name for the rest of his posts. You’ll find the columns I quoted in his posts. Under his name.

  • GregB999

OK, I’m a Comca$h user. It’s better than what I can get through Qworst though, and I don’t really have anywhere else to go for high speed down here in the Twin Cities. I don’t really have the time with school work to go back through Say Anything and the Comca$h forums, but if you provide some specific links, I’ll be happy to post some questions asking about plagiarism. Been covering that a bit in school lately…

  • Pilgrim

Rob, I wouldn’t even have minded if the posts had been attributed to Say Anything. Anyone following a link can find the author.

And I agree with what Lik said above. Grudges are heavy things to carry and I find it a waste of time and energy to do so. Just….stop it. Learn from it. Then come and squabble with the rest of us.

Welcome to da blog silencedgood (AKA silencedogod?)and don’t exile yourself, leave that for people not willing to fess up. Glad to see you here!
    (nibble nibble)
    j/k ;-)

    Silencedogood,

Thanks. Apology accepted and my kudos to you for bracing up and doing the honorable thing. Good job.

While browsing around the net one day I found one of my articles at a forum called City Hall at Comcast.

You mean, you got an e-mail from me on September 29th telling you that you’re being read, but not credited. I had done some Googling and found your Brokeback Palestinians column.

The host at Comcast’s Forum “City Hall” is an extreme, dictatorial Leftist of the first order named ‘Patriot,’ I have fought against his mean spirited management of that site for some time and I am sending a complaint to the Attorney General about Comcast being a Political Action Organization in that their City Hall forum is extremely Left Wing and even in the headlines on the Home Page they parrot liberal news media in using language to condemn everything Bush does. Things over there will never change until Patriot is removed.

By the way Patriot represents a private company that has a deal with Comcast and Comcast users via their monthly fees underwrite much of Patriot’s Leftist agenda.

OK group, let us all pat the almighty grand sleuth likwidshoe on the back for not missing a chance to take credit for credit being taken from Pilgrim!
    ;-P

  • 2Hotel9

I also stay away from comcast, not F-ing wild about AOL either!

  • silencedgood

Hey everyone, guilty and completely sorry for the infractions. No excuses but remorse and promises that anything else posted by me will come from my head and not someone else’s work.

I’ve tried to atone by deleting the post. However, some are locked and cannot be changed as the one in this article. I’m appalled at my actions and won’t be going into any forums for a while as some sort of self imposed exile.

I want Rob to know that I feel really bad about it but I don’t know how to contact him directly. I hope someone here will inform him. And thanks for setting me straight.

    Peace.

Gang, I tried to go to comcast cityhall using our workstation, it has concertina&napalm security and is anonymousized right to the balls. It would not allow the page to even open. Immediately started popping flags and alerts then locked it out. I feel for y’all what have to use comcast. Where we live we have several choices, though it appears that earthlink is headed down the toilet.

Pil, you are certainly more forgiving than I. Although I am full of forgiveness, once my enemies are dead and bloated on the ground I forgive them.

I been wondering, does this dipstick actually comment here? Or just skim through looking for things to steal, like a Democrat?

  • http://sayanythingblog.com/readers/author/Anna/ Anna

Exactly… what a compliment to Pilgrim, (in an odd, weird way of some sort). I am with ya’ll on this, add a word or two of his own, quote Pilgrim and link where the credit was due.
Come join us Mr/Ms. Silencedogood, and we promise not to bite (we may gnaw on you a bit but nothing life threatening) ;-)

  • Neiman

I made that mistake a few times, but: 1. I always include quotation marks indicating they are not my words. We do not put quotation marks around our own words. 2. If I feel like commenting inside a quotation, I use [ ] to indicate it did not originate with the author. 3. It is too time consuming to always add attributions, but quotation marks will help make it clear the words are not original to the one commenting. 4. If asked who said this or that, then one should be prepared to make a full attribution.

  • http://sayanythingblog.com/ likwidshoe

Haha. Thanks Anna. Just looking for CREDIT where CREDIT is due! ;)

On a more serious note, plagiarism brings about weird feelings. On one hand, you’re slightly flattered that someone thought your work good enough to attribute to themselves. On the other, you’re miffed by the immense disrespect.

Silencedogood – you’d do yourself well to just stop what you’re doing. I’d suggest erasing what you have already posted and personally sending a note to Pilgrim apologizing. That would go a long way. Then, get a different handle and come join the conversation here. No one has to know. Start over and do it right.

  • Pilgrim

That’s correct. Likwidshoe did point me to the initial post in an e-mail. I bitched to him that the guy didn’t credit and had changed some stuff.

I then looked deeper into it and found the rest of the guy’s butchery. So….the credit for the initial discovery does belong to Lik.

  • http://sayanythingblog.com robport

The numb nuts can’t even come up with an original pseudonym. He had to steal Ben Franklin’s.

  • http://sayanythingblog.com robport

Pilgrim linked to one example in the post. I’m sure he can provide more links too.

  • http://sayanythingblog.com robport

Silence, no worries. Sometimes in the heat of posting to the internet it’s easy to forget that the stuff you’re posting is written by someone else.

Back when I first started blogging I’d get a little carried away with the block quoting and sometimes steal too much of a person’s article.

It happens. Glad to have you on board here.

  • http://sayanythingblog.com robport

    I second Lik.

I’m sure Pilgrim wouldn’t have minded the posts being liberally quoted…and then linked/attributed to Pilgrim.

  • http://sayanythingblog.com robport

I’m actually pretty bad at that. I see new stories, then I write about them, and then forget where I found it from.

So I sort of gave up doing hat-tips a long time ago. I try to link the bloggers I read regularly in the posts though.
