This Is Why I Don’t Ride These Things……

Yeesh:

ANGELS CAMP, Calif. (AP)—A carnival ride spinning with people collapsed at a county fair Friday night, injuring all 24 people aboard.

The carnival ride, called the Yo-Yo, collapsed shortly after 6 p.m. Friday at the Calaveras County Fair and Jumping Frog Jubilee, about 80 miles southeast of Sacramento.

The ride has metal arms, each with a seat at the end attached by a chain, that swing outward as the ride picks up speed. The arms rise and fall as they spin around a center pole, putting the seats horizontal to the ground.

The pole apparently collapsed, causing the arms to crash back toward the center, said Dennis Townsend, a chief in the Calaveras County unit of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Prevention.

I realize that the rides at places like Magic Mountain in California and of course Disney or Six Flags are meticulously maintained and inspected. BUT - carnivals have a bit less oversight.

I just don’t like the idea of putting myself in a metal device that goes very fast or very high and is taken down and moved, then put back together many times a year by a bunch of people who call themselves “carnies”.

No thanks.

Sounds like the North Dakota State Fair. I was on a ride once called the Enterprise, waiting for it to start, looked over at the motor, and it was spurting oil. I enjoyed the ride, but it made me a little hesitant to get on another one.  And then what about the ones that get stuck on for like a half hour.

I would also note that the vast majority of “carnies” are plastered drunk while operating this machinery.

Heh. Probably right. A lot of them are wanted someplace or on the run from child support or whatever. Or are felons who live outside the mainstream in the relative anonymity of the carny gypsy lifestyle.

I’ve never been able to bring myself to ride carnival rides.  On one hand, I don’t like to ride in/on anything I’m not personally operating (I’m never a passenger in a car).  On the other hand, I look at the crack squad of savvy, motivated personnel they’ve got running the rides and setting them up and I’d just as soon not take the risk.

One week ago today, I was with my daughter, three granddaughters and grandson in Jackson, California. We went to a local Founder’s Day celebration where they had one of these Carnivals, maybe the same one, I don’t know; but, my 16 year-old grandson refued to ride and told me that he didn’t like the looks of the ride equipment and didn’t think they were safe.

True story!

CALIFORNIA IS EXTREMELY LAXED WHEN IT COMES TO AMUSEMENT RIDE SAFETY; THERE IS NOT ONE CERTIFIED AMUSEMENT RIDE INSPECTOR OVERSEEING THESE OVERNIGHT SET UP CARNIVALS; UNLIKE THE STATE OF WASHINGTON; PLEASE WRITE TO Governor Schwarzenegger AND HAVE A SIMILAR PROGRAM IMPLIMENTED LIKE THEY DO IN WASHINGTON STATE BEFORE MORE OF OUR CHILDREN ARE INJURIED OR KILLED ON THESE DANGEROUS UN-INSPECTED RIDES. My daughter was a dealerthere, she’s a nurse now. I was born in Reno, my Uncle worked fpr Bill Harrah and my mother worked in a Bingo Hall when I was born. But, I rarely gamble and I am too cheap to lose much money.
