“They believe in government to help themselves and their powerful friends.”

That’s a line from Elizabeth Warren’s speech last night, and she was directing it at Republicans:

Republicans say they don’t believe in government. Sure they do. They believe in government to help themselves and their powerful friends.

I won’t defend Republicans against accusations of crony capitalism because they’re guilty as charged, but it’s sort of rich to hear this line coming out of Warren’s mouth after Democrat National Convention attendees were treated to a video tribute to the auto bailouts before her speech.

Plus, let’s not forget that key figures in the Solyndra debacle got the VIP treatment at the convention. In fact, when Steven Spinner (a top Obama fundraiser who got a political appointment to the Department of Energy where he helped funnel money to Solyndra) was spotted by the news media at the convention, he took off running.

So yes, many Republicans are crony capitalists. But Democrats – up to and including Barack Obama – don’t have much room to talk.
