The Western Collegiate Hockey Association Integrity Gap Grows:

Yesterday I did a story on Denver University’s Men’s Hockey Coach George Gwozdecky’s meltdown on Saturday night well he was playing my Fighting Sioux of North Dakota. To put it in a nutshell Gwozdecky didn’t like a non-call (which happen all of the time in hockey) and spazzed out. He got thrown out and rather than go quietly he walked out on the ice to talk to the official. As far as anyone knows that kind of childish behavior is unprecedented in NCAA hockey. Denver University did not get penalized for these playground theatrics.
The league being real disciplinarians said that since the Athletic Director of Denver University spoke to him they were satisfied and considered the case closed. No suspensions were offered.
Apparently the WCHA which has no integrity failed to look into the matter at all:
Denver has suspended head hockey coach George Gwozdecky one game for violating an NCAA rule that does not allow an ejected coach to communicate with or contact team personnel in any manner until a game is completed.
Gwozdecky is claiming he didn’t understand the rules. I find that explanation to be unbelievable for such an experienced coach.
The WCHA has still got their heads stuck in the ice. As of right now the only word on their website is the one from yesterday where they declared the matter closed. [Update] The WCHA has no issued an statement endorsing the actions of Denver U and apparently will be taking no further action. I hope that issuing this statement didn’t involve disturbing Commissioner Bruce McLeod’s nap.
What a bunch of buffoons. They didn’t even bother to look into a matter concerning the worst behavior by a coach in all of the years I’ve been a college hockey fan. The leadership of the WCHA has to go.
This isn’t the first time that Gwozdecky has gotten out of hand in Grand Forks. A video from last years game has Gwodecky apparently pushing a player to join a fight between one UND and one DU player. (about 53 seconds in) The league didn’t do anything then either.
