The Union Strikes In France Are Falling Apart

This is very good news for Sarkozy:

Yesterday, the strike of rail and subway workers that has crippled France for nine days was clearly crumbling, as workers began returning to work in large numbers and union branches conceded that support for the dispute is collapsing.

The left wing stoked strike has had a crippling effect on France’s economy but Sarkozy hasn’t given in. France has been struggling with an entitlement mentality that has slowed their economy and is basically keeping them in a non-competitive sleep walk. Sarkozy wants to change that and the left doesn’t like it. But their strike tactic hasn’t worked and most of the unions are giving up:

Managers for SNCF announced yesterday that 42 out of 45 rail union committees have voted to abandon the national strike that has frozen the country’s economy, and will return to work without delay.

Think anyone on the left here in America will understand the message in all of this?

Meh. They just had a month off for national holiday not too long ago. They probably just got bored and are going back to work. After all, what is their to do in France if you live there?

This strike has turned a lot of the people against the union leadership. It has been counter productive to pretty much everything it was supposed to accomplish.

Long ago in a far away land, the Supreme Court ruled that a man's labor is his property.

If you sell your home, your car, your chickens, the tomatoes you grew, or any of your other property, do you try to get the best deal you can? Are you entitled to get the best deal you can? Do you have a sense of entitlement? Is a man selling his labor entitled to get the best deal that he can? Is this not capitalism at its finest?

The sense of entitlement that is not justified is at the other end of the spectrum where people believe that everyone else is a serf and they are entitled to have everyone give them things so that they can not work and do whatever they want full time. These would be kings usually detest and have a lot of contempt for people who labor.

You do realize that this article is about unions in France right?

Are you entitled to get the best deal you can? Do you have a sense of entitlement? Is a man selling his labor entitled to get the best deal that he can? Is this not capitalism at its finest?

Key words are you can. Which means you won't necessarily get everything that you desire all the time. You aren't entitled to the price of your house, car, baseball cards, labor or anything else. Sometimes you get what you want, sometimes you get more, sometimes you get less. That is capitalism.

…believe that everyone else is a serf

I doubt anyone could honestly characterize the condition of French rail/subway workers as serfdom.(even after their upcoming contract renegotiation)

they are entitled to have everyone give them things so that they can not work and do whatever they want full time. These would be kings usually detest and have a lot of contempt for people who labor.

The funny thing is that fits the typical lefty/Democrat voter to a T.

Sounds just like the US auto industry.

ews: Unions exist to fix the price and supply of labor at above market price; they do this because they are exempted(in this country) from anti-trust legislation. Let's level the playing field, and remove that exemption for the unions. Then you might have an argument.

I hope the B'Way stagehands union gets the message. These guys are striking for paying people not to work! The TV writers' strike is over a fair complaint, but it may not generate too much sympathy with fans. Sarkozy won, in France, but I'm of a divided opinion on how the current "big strikes" will be resolved here in the US. Both should come to a head around Christmas, if I dare venture a guess.

ews you are absolutely right! Your Party, the Democrat Party,"These would be kings usually detest and have a lot of contempt for people who labor." is perfectly described by that sentence. And these,"The sense of entitlement that is not justified is at the other end of the spectrum where people believe that everyone else is a serf" is the mentality of your Party, the Democrat Party.

Thanks for clearing that up for us, nitwit.
