The True Leader Of The Republican Party? Governor Sanford Fights Back On The Stimulus

A couple of days ago the Obama administration told Governor Mark Sanford that he couldn’t do something responsible with his state’s share of the “stimulus” spending spree. Namely, pay down some of his state’s debt.
Today Governor Sanford responded to the Obama administration saying that he felt he could use the “stimulus” money to pay down his state’s debts, and he’d appreciate it if Obama called off the DNC dogs who have been running ads in his state criticizing him for daring to pay down South Carolina’s debt with the stimulus instead of expand it.

Gov. Mark Sanford just sent back a letter to President Obama in response to the rejection letter he received yesterday from the White House about his request to not be forced to use the stimulus money to buy yet more debt. In the letter, Sanford offers several statutory reasons for why his state can use the stimulus funds to reduce debt levels instead of spending it on jobs.
He writes: “I’ve made clear my opposition to using debt to solve a problem created in the first place by too much debt — and I don’t believe this to be an unreasonable position.” …
He also reiterates his call for the Democratic National Committee (DNC) to take down its ads criticizing Sanford for his stance. “What I find less reasonable is the way this DNC attack ad returns a nation indeed yearning for change back to the same old politics-as-usual,” he writes.

The absurdity of this spectacle, which has the Obama administration telling a governor that he must create more government debt that his constituents must pay off with their tax dollars instead of paying that debt down and doing it in the name of “economic stimulus, is simply amazing, Sanford should be credited with backing Obama into this corner.
The federal government is essentially telling a duly elected Governor of a sovereign state that he should shut up and do what the federal government tells him. That’s not how our Republic is supposed to work.

Looks like Barry O. got pnded by Sanford. Amateur hour at the White House continues.

  • robert108

How come the republican governor of 7 years has a state in debt?

Dumb little dinostem: it’s the Dem legislature that has the State in debt, not the governor. The legislature spends the money, just like in the federal govt.

  • robert108

Massive expansion of debt, due to Dem social engineering schemes in the housing and finance markets, caused the present problem; Obamastem’s even more massive wasteful spending has made the problem worse, and now Sanford wants to reverse that failed scheme, and he gets demonized for being fiscally responsible.
Nothing could be more revealing of leftie economic ignorance.
    We can’t afford Obamastem.

  • crshedd

If what you say is true, then the gov should be applauded for wanting to pay down that debt, right? right, let us applaude republicans for running up the debt in s.c. wasteful social spending can simply increase to eat it up. give me a break. republicans in s.c. increased ‘wasteful social spending’?Obamastem wants to force this money on SC, while the gov doesn’t want it. didn’t you read the article? the gov wants the money, he just wants it to cover his and the republican controlled legislature’s ‘wasteful social spending’.

since we can’t seem to rely on the private sector to create jobs, the government should. if people get jobs, even government jobs, they have money to spend which means the private sector has to hire more people. the ‘achievers’ have not been creating jobs for almost a year now, and before that, they didn’t create that many jobs when compared to the clinton years.

  • crshedd

    good god, where to start.

He writes: “I’ve made clear my opposition to using debt to solve a problem created in the first place by too much debt — and I don’t believe this to be an unreasonable position.” …

yet the gov wants to use federal debt to lessen his own debt. can you say hypocrisy?

    robert108

Dumb little dinostem: it’s the Dem legislature that has the State in debt, not the governor. The legislature spends the money, just like in the federal govt.

republicans have controlled the house (in south carolina) since 1996. republicans have controlled the senate since 2000. there has been a republican gov since 2002.
REPUBLICANS ran up that debt in south carolina. not democrats. since republicans claim that tax cuts INCREASE government income, WHY does south carolina need any bailout at all?

  • http://sayanythingblog.com/entry/america_is_back/#c397018 Dino2

Well gee, Carrick-stem, that isn’t the point. You’re the people that claim to be so superior what with your tax cuts and fiscal discipline. Here you have a state with total republican control for YEARS and it’s in debt!

What happened? (Answering a question with a question isn’t an answer. Try again.)

PS. THe “liberal” state of Oregon had a republican-controlled legislature from 1990 to 2004. That’s what led us to the debt we’re in. See how that works? if not for Portland, this state would be as big a conservative shithole as most of the south.

  • http://sayanythingblog.com/entry/america_is_back/#c397018 Dino2

Give it up, shed. Robbie is insane and will make up “facts” that support his delusions.

Seriously, of all the nutjobs here, he’s the King.

  • http://sayanythingblog.com/entry/america_is_back/#c397018 Dino2

Well why does SC have such a big debt? It’s been run by conservatives for years! They should be flush with cash. Sanford has been governor since 2002. How come he hasn’t turned his state into an economic Utopia?

They have the second highest unemployment rate in the country in SC. Why? Seems odd, doesn’t it, that such a fiscally conservative leader should need to pay down debt and is presiding over a very high unemployment rate.

Are South Carolina’s economic problems Jimmy Carter’s fault? LOL

Let’s see what might be the cause of their budget woes down there in the old south:

S.C. tax cuts get blame for budget woes

Some of the tax cuts were good like taxes on food. But they also don’t tax enough in other ways so they’re going broke. And the article says the worst is yet to come for SC. So much for the republican miracle! Poor southerners!

  • Bat One

I thought we were in conservative fiscal Utopia...

    Wrong Verb!

  • http://sayanythingblog.com/entry/america_is_back/#c397018 Dino2

Aw c’mon people! I want answers! Surely on of you stems can tell me why a republican dominated state is in debt, has the second highest unemployment rate and is fucked up!

Aren’t you people supposed to create Utopia with your tax cuts and fiscal discipline? Create great societies that run on nothing but AIR?

    LOL, ya stupid fucks.

  • http://sayanythingblog.com/entry/america_is_back/#c397018 Dino2

Robbie’s lunatic rantings aside since he just makes shit up, not one of the stems can answer the questions about the “Sanford miracle economy”.

Nice try at obfuscating by reaching back 40 years there Chief.

  • carrick

    Good question, Dino:

    47 OREGON 9.9
    48 CALIFORNIA 10.1
    49 RHODE ISLAND 10.3
    50 SOUTH CAROLINA 10.4
    51 MICHIGAN 11.6

While we’re at it, explain why not four out of the top five are liberal states?

  • http://sayanythingblog.com/readers/author/realitybasedbob/ realitybasedbob

    Good find, Dino2

  • http://sayanythingblog.com/entry/america_is_back/#c397018 Dino2

What are these economic conditions of last year that you speak of, Potato? I thought we were in conservative fiscal Utopia until Jan 20th?

Do explain to us why Sanford gets a pass for the dismal performance of his leadership of SEVEN YEARS and you miscreants want to blame Obama for the economy after 60 DAYS?

Also explain how come you ignorant shitstains like to throw out the poverty of cities like Detroit in a feeble attempt to blame liberals when those cities are less powerful than even a governor to change the conditions of their citizens?

  • carrick

crshedd, are you really suggesting that Republican’s can’t act fiscally like liberals?

Your whole line of reasoning is just bizarre. It isn’t about party affiliation, it’s what fiscal policies a given group follow that dictate whether they are “conservative” or “socially progressive”.

  • http://sayanythingblog.com/entry/america_is_back/#c397018 Dino2

C’mon, people. Surely one of you conservative geniuses can explain why SC is in debt after years of republican rule!

Where’s that conservative miracle? You know, the one that worked so well for the country at large?

  • http://tatertotsforthemasses.blogspot.com/ Houston

    Dino2,

Grant me the serenity to ignore the trolls,
the courage to debate with honest opponents,
and the wisdom to know the difference.

    I know the difference.

  • http://magyartruth.blogspot.com/ Chief RZ

Maybe because we believe in hard work, the work ethic, not handing out money for not working, and financial responsibility.

What might certain people say about Mayor J. Lyndsay who just about bankrupt the City of New York back in the 1960s? Irresponsibility. Unions. Extortion.

Honesty and integrity are the best policies.

  • robert108

Robbie’s lunatic rantings aside since he just makes shit up…

No facts, no logic, no cause and effect reasoning: par for the course for ignorant little dinostem.

The problem of wasteful social spending goes back to FDR, and continues today, massively increased by Obamastem, at a time of economic contraction. Stupid.

Stick with the juvenile insults, little dinostem; it’s all you have. You sure don’t have any facts or cause and effect reasoning.

  • robert108

How can you blame last year’s economic collapse for SC’s problems if things were great until Obama took over and ruined everything?

With his double whammy of wealth destruction and massive debt increases, Obamastem has turned a slight recession into a big one, and has impeded recovery with his idiotic economic schemes.
What was bad before, he has made much worse.

Schooled you again, dumb little dinostem.

  • robert108

REPUBLICANS ran up that debt in south carolina. not democrats. If what you say is true, then the gov should be applauded for wanting to pay down that debt, right? since republicans claim that tax cuts INCREASE government income, Only if spending isn’t increased, moron. Even with the increased revenue that comes from tax rate cuts, wasteful social spending can simply increase to eat it up. WHY does south carolina need any bailout at all? I’m not familiar with SC politics, so I don’t know if you’re lying or not, but the bailouts come from the Obamastem administration, and were not requested by SC. In fact, Obamastem wants to force this money on SC, while the gov doesn’t want it. Didn’t you read the article? In fact, the money has already been stolen from the taxpayers, so why not take it? We already paid for it. The error is in doing the bailouts in the first place, then continuing to do them, even after they were proven to be a failure.

The truth is, govt spending cannot create economic growth, it can only impede the process by taking the money from the achievers and, after the govt takes its cut, giving it back to non achievers and low achievers. That is anti-growth.
Govt is an operating expense, if you know anything about bookkeeping or accounting.

  • http://sayanythingblog.com/entry/america_is_back/#c397018 Dino2

Well what’s taking so long to get me some answers, stems? Where are those wordy, pithy comebacks from the likes of potato and batshit?

    Here, let me reiterate.

How come the republican governor of 7 years has a state in debt?

How can you blame last year’s economic collapse for SC’s problems if things were great until Obama took over and ruined everything?

C’mon shitstains, we want some answers.

  • http://suitepotato.blogspot.com/ sayanything-4808

Bleah… Typing in three windows again. Replace “income” with “article”. That’s why my coworker is laughing…

  • http://suitepotato.blogspot.com/ sayanything-4808

Whenever you two are done blowing each other, why don’t you show which part of that income shows a proper causal link between the tax cuts and the current shortfall and don’t forget to take into account the economic changes nationwide which began with a rumbling through the markets around July and then went into the falls in September.

I read the article end to end and it doesn’t say remotely what you two delusionaly wish it did.
