The Stimulus Bill Will Give The Feds Access To All Your Medical Records

I know that the term “Orwellian” is an overused term, and comparisons to his novels such as 1984 and Animal Farm tend to be overdone, but this fits Orwell’s grim, gray vision of a nightmare future to a “T”:

The bill’s health rules will affect “every individual in the United States” (445, 454, 479). Your medical treatments will be tracked electronically by a federal system. Having electronic medical records at your fingertips, easily transferred to a hospital, is beneficial. It will help avoid duplicate tests and errors.
But the bill goes further. One new bureaucracy, the National Coordinator of Health Information Technology, will monitor treatments to make sure your doctor is doing what the federal government deems appropriate and cost effective. The goal is to reduce costs and “guide” your doctor’s decisions (442, 446). These provisions in the stimulus bill are virtually identical to what Daschle prescribed in his 2008 book, “Critical: What We Can Do About the Health-Care Crisis.” According to Daschle, doctors have to give up autonomy and “learn to operate less like solo practitioners.”

Emphasis mine.
So….some office clown somewhere will decide if my doctor is doing the right thing concerning my treatment without ever having spoken to either of us? Just what qualifies this individual to make that sort of determination?
There’s more, and it’s even more frightening:

Hospitals and doctors that are not “meaningful users” of the new system will face penalties. “Meaningful user” isn’t defined in the bill. That will be left to the HHS secretary, who will be empowered to impose “more stringent measures of meaningful use over time” (511, 518, 540-541)

Again, someone in the employ of the federal gubmint will be deciding just how “meaningful” your doctor and his or her treatment of you is truly is. And there will be penalties involved if they decide that they’re not “meaningful” enough.
Holy Hippocrates on a crutch. If that’s not enough to scare the hell out of you I don’t know what is. No more privacy, and unnamed bureaucrats deciding what’s best for you medically and who are poised to punish your doctor if he steps across some poorly defined line.
Bottom line: This “stimulus bill” is a naked power grab by big government and will allow them to boldly go where no American government has gone before – right into the privacy between you and your doctor that is now held sacred. Your doctor’s proctoscope won’t be the only thing looking up your rear end. No secrets anymore, pal.
One more thought about this…..remember what that Ohio bureaucrat did with Joe the Plumber’s records in supposedly confidential government computer files? Can you even begin to imagine what would happen to your life if someone did the same with your medical records? Have a controversial political opinion that doesn’t jibe with what they want you to say? Better keep it to yourself. That embarrassing herpes incident, or your hemorrhoid history would make fantastic tabloid fodder. Yeah. I trust the government. Just ask the aforementioned Joe the Plumber.
Folks, the future ain’t what it used to be.

Obama is clearly ignorant of any serious economic knowledge. His references during this evening’s news conference of Japan’s experiences during the 1990s was particularly amusing and telling of just how little this man understands what he’s saying. The Japanese, suffering a deflationary recession with sharply declining real estate values, went on a deficit spending spree which, as a percentage of GDP was far greater than even Obama, Pelosi, and Reid have imagined. The results, beside a huge national debt and much higher inflation and interest rates, were negligible.

No experience to lead, we elected a man that is as green as they come.

  • mplsbob

wow! hope and change. Why not just implant a chip in all of us to monitor our every move, what we eat, how much exercise you have done, etc…

    wow.

    They are.

Sig, it is not a matter of “hiding” anything. They are your personal medical records, your property, and you say who has access to them and who does not.

  • docdave

2Hotel9 – Good point, if you go to your doctors and demand they give you your medical records they must do so.

Naw, they just give you a copy retaining the originals. Privacy is basically dead in this country. Already the feds can get at your financial records so it’s not a far reach for them to get the rest of your personal info too.

Aren’t you the people who always willingly submit to authority? You support wire-taps, random searches, things like that? Then why would you object ot them knowing about your bunions or jock itch?

I don’t care if the government has my medical records.

Problem is, the piece this thread is based is an opinion piece with very little in the way of specificity as to this grave threat to our privacy. It’s just more knee jerk reactivity from the sore losers of the election.

Perhaps we can go back to carbon paper for medical records and card catalogs at the library so Big Brother can’t find out what books we read.

I’m so looking forward to see what tomorrow’s outrage will be just as soon as we can get the conservatives out from under the bed.

Go and get your medical records, do not let these National Socialists have access to them.

This sounds pretty scarey to me. I live in the UK and we have the famous (or infamous) National Health Service, which has come in for lots of criticism over the years, but in my limited experience is very, very good. I hope no UK government ever tries to mess with it.

  • mnconservative

Oh come on now, Obambi says they will keep everything safe and secure and it will really stream line health care. SUUURRRE! We all know how trustworthy this bunch of thugs. He has no idea what goes on in a hospital, clinic, or emergency room.

  • Bat One

…he’s doing fine exposing himself for what he is.

Obama is clearly ignorant of any serious economic knowledge. His references during this evening’s news conference of Japan’s experiences during the 1990s was particularly amusing and telling of just how little this man understands what he’s saying. The results, beside a huge national debt and much higher inflation and interest rates, were negligible.

Obama also lied, insisting that the GOP opposition is based on the notion that there should be tax cuts and not deficit spending. The basis for GOP opposition, however, is that Keynesian deficit spending sprees of this sort have never worked, but only create more long-term economic and fiscal problems.

  • SigFan

Well, I guess the one bright spot is that this totally blows the “Right to Privacy” that Roe vs. Wade established doesn’t it? Oh, I’m sorry that only extends to those who subscribe to the socialist agenda, the rest of you, we’re watching!

2Hotel9 – Good point, if you go to your doctors and demand they give you your medical records they must do so. Unfortunately, going forward if this passes, anything that happens between you and your physician will be “public record” unless you demand each and every time they surrender your records to you prior to submitting them to the government (not sure we’ll have this option).

I personally have nothing to hide or that I would be concerned with others knowing about my medical history, but still am adamantly opposed to the government knowing anything about me other than name, rank and serial number. Given that we’re now the “enemy combatants” in this, do we not get Geneva Convention rights and protections?

  • 2Hotel9

Kay, dinothefakehomo is all for the government killing off millions of people, it has repeatedly crowed that it wants civil war in America and for all Americans to die.

RoevWade is done. The government will now restrict births, forcing abortions on all women.

Agreed about the experience.. I even think he comes across as being quite uncomfortable right now…

It goes further by telling the elderly sick that they’ll have to suffer for the great good; or rather, government funded health care is only available for the non-sick and females who love to suck out their baby’s brain.

I knew the day would come when Liberals embrace euthanasia in order to solve their government funded free health care plan.

Hope & Change! Peace & Love! Freedom for Terrorist’s, BUT to heck with US!

  • 2Hotel9

DD, good point, and it leads exactly where I intended. I tell my healthcare provider that they can not release my, or my wife and son’s, medical records they can not. When they do so the Rule Of Law no longer binds me. I can do what I want to who I want any time I want in any manner I want.

    Anarchy. Its whats for dinner.

  • syn

Well, I guess the one bright spot is that this totally blows the “Right to Privacy” that Roe vs. Wade established doesn’t it?

    Excellent point!

If you want free government health care you’ll have to give up your Right to Privacy!

Not quite little neerdowell. We’re the ones who fight against the socialism and communism that you so dearly love.

  • http://suitepotato.blogspot.com/ sayanything-4808

So, Dino… How secure do you think your records really are? Are you sure? Do you know what percentage of doctors’ offices use encryption on their hard drives of any kind? Did you know it is close to zero?
