The Southpark Censorship Decision Was Made By Comedy Central

A lot of people commenting here and elsewhere on the Southpark/Mohammed censorship controversy have been putting forth the idea that Comedy Central didn't really censor. That, instead, it was a publicity stunt by the show's creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone.

Just to clear things up, let me say this: Of course it was a publicity stunt. Parker and Stone wanted to call attention to some liberal double standards. Which they did. After all, Comedy Central censored the Mohammed scene out of an interest in sensitivity and "public safety," yet allowed a scene where Jesus pooped on the President.

Which apparently tells us that in order for Christianity to gain the respect from Comedy Central that Islam enjoys they're going to have to start blowing some stuff up.

And Comedy Central did censor the scene in quesiton. They've admitted it as per their quote in the Washington Post and comments made in response to phone calls made to the company.

This is an ugly double standard Comedy Central is displaying, and it is worth criticism. That people would defend Comedy Central - the same people who would likely be up-in-arms had the channel shown Mohammed pooping on Osama bin Laden but censored a scene with Jesus for political correctness - is baffling.

I’ll repost a comment I made earlier. Simply, I believe there is a good chance that you are wrong:

If Muhammad had not been censored in this episode, the final scene (with Jesus and Bush defecating everywhere) wouldn’t have made much sense. In order for that scene to be funny, it would have to air immediately after the censorship of Muhammad. Or else....there wouldn’t be a joke. The whole point of that was to show how open-minded Christians and "the west" are compared to Muslims--and in order to show that they would have to censor the Muslim image and play the Christian image.

I would bet good money that Matt Stone and Trey Parker censored the image themselves, and Comedy Central has just been playing along in the media these past few days. Obviously, we can’t know for sure. But the fact that they keep re-airing this episode (as opposed to earlier episodes that offended Christians and Scientologists) tells me that something fishy is going on.

It’s worth noting that the first of this two-part episode started on the first Wednesday (the night their show airs) after April Fools Day.

I don’t know where my sense of humor went.  I used to be known for it.

I just don’t see where a scene where Jesus "craps" all over the President of the United States is funny.

I suppose we should be happy that Comedy Central came to the conclusion that Christians were open-minded and Muslims aren’t.  I totally missed that in the Mohammed Cartoon riots.

 Sponsors please.

The only proof that I’m wrong is your speculation about Comedy Central being "in on the gage."  They’ve admitted that they censored the scene.  I think this is just some wishful thinking on your part.

It’s not! It’s only funny for Islamic Fundamentalists with an irrational hatred of Christianity and President Bush. That’s the joke. (If you haven’t seen the whole episode, the scene with Jesus and Bush is made by a Muslim cleric as "retaliation" for the Muhammad scene.)

Well, if they immediately denied it, it would sorta ruin the hoax, you know?

I think this is just some wishful thinking on your part.

Perhaps. On the other hand, I’ve watched a lot of South Park, and a hoax like this is exactly up the creators’ alley.

What is the point of the hoax?  It makes Comedy Central look really, really bad.  Sure, South Park is getting a lot of attention...but Comedy Central is getting a lot of bad attention.

Again, I think this is just wishful thinking from someone who doesn’t want to believe that his beloved Comedy Central is a bunch of panty-waist liberals.

Unless they are lying to their own diary, or web site !

Reminds me of the famous scene with Andy Kaufman on SLN sometime in the 70s.  Certain liberals thought they knew what really, really happened.  I saw the original, live.  There are always certain people who think they know it all, and are "hip".  They are played all the time.

This is another reason to talk and converse with the language of The Truth.

Hmmm… after digging through the internet for a while, this looks a bit too widespread to be a hoax. (Check out this article at the Volovk Conspiracy  http://volokh.com/archives/archive_2006_04_09-2006_04_15.shtml#1144984968). My bad.....for now.

I still don’t think we can blame Comedy Central on this (nor do I think we can imply through headlines that they’re sympathetic to Muslim terrorists). They either didn’t want to be attacked themselves or they didn’t want to be responsible for the deaths of others as a direct result of a television show. I firmly believe that if more Christians committed acts of terrorism scenes offensive to Christianity could be excised from television as well.

These Muslims are not screwing around, and they will kill over a cartoon show. How would you have felt if right after they showed the image of Mohammed they showed instructions on how to build a bomb? Because it’s essentially the same thing. This was done out of fear and concern for the safety of others....not "tolerance."

Total apologist pap.

And nobody is saying that Comedy Central supports terrorism, we’re saying that they’re giving in to the terrorists.  Which is more dangerous, in the long run, than ticking them off.

Then I’ll leave it up to you. I think you’re right, by the way.

Like Dave, I must admit that my instincts were wrong.

In some ways, the fact that network executives acted out of fear over a show about network executives acting out of fear just makes the joke funnier.

The manatees were funny too. Not as funny as monkeys, but still funny.

Like Dave, I must admit that my instincts were wrong.

When I saw the episode live on Wednesday night, I just figured it was part of the joke. I didn’t even really think twice about it--it is exactly the type of humor Matt and Trey are famous for. Especially with the way the episode ended (with the Christ defecation), it made a really nice point about Western open-mindedness and opposition to censorship.

So when I first started hearing these stories that Comedy Central actually did censor the show, I hope it’s easy to see why I doubted them right away.

I am puzzled why there is so much outrage at Comedy Central for this decision as compared to their earlier decision to cave in to Catholic demands for censorship in "Bloody Mary." If we’re to agree that censorship is bad, it should still be bad even if they’re censoring your own religion.

Censorsip makes Little She sad - mock self-censorship to make $$ is lame - self censorship out of fear = blah.

Not showing a cartoon of muhammad on a magnet is just funny grin
