The Son of a Preacher Man by Dusty Springfield

Well it is Sunday.

My favorite part of this song is unfortunately almost cut off. I think the opening riff is sublime.

    Cool!

I thought it was “I Can’t Help the Way I Don’t Feel” that she sang to you.

You’re right! “You don’t have to say you love me” was the one she sang to me!

I’ve loved this song ever since I saw Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction – great soundtrack with Dusty, Al Green, many others.

She wasn’t singing that to Proof.

I knew he was a songwriter before he made it (almost) big, but not that he was so prominent.

Randy Newman did make it big. But before he started writing for Disney he put out some brilliant albums in the late 60s and 70s.

I recommend 12 Songs and Sail Away.

Though many here will say that he is awful because of his political views.

    Puuuure sweetness….

Are you sure she wasn’t singing “You have really bad B.O.”

    Blue eyed soul.

Dusty in Memphis is one of the greatest albums of all time.

Finally having bought “Dusty in Memphis” a couple of years ago, I was surprised to see a couple of Randy Newman compositions on the CD. I knew he was a songwriter before he made it (almost) big, but not that he was so prominent.

“Dusty in Memphis” also holds up so much better than her duet with the Pet Shop Boys, “What Have I done to Deserve This.” (YouTube clip.) Ugh, those keyboards.

Could be! Sometimes, when she was breathing in my ear like that, I found it hard to concentrate on the lyrics!

You having some really bad flashbacks tonight, Whistler?

Thanks I love the part before the lyrics start for some reason.

Funny but I actually got to talk to Reggie Young about that opening once. The opening guitar riff was a little riff he said he used to make sure his guitar was in tune, they heard him playing it before they started recording and told him to work it into the song.

Funny how things you aren’t thinking about make such a huge impact. He was just noodling around and make one of the most recognizable riffs of all time. It was just a throwaway thing that happened to be used.
