The Same Old Promises From the Democrats On Energy Independence

Nancy Pants is Promising energy independence in 10 years:

SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE [Nancy Pelosi]: ... I don’t like to comment on what other people say – but we’re very pleased with what is happening here in our first 100 hours. We signaled a new direction in Congress in terms of fiscal soundness, openness in governance, highest ethical standards. We are moving toward energy independence and we intend to achieve it within 10 years.

Emphasis mine.  Of course this is the same party that blocked any reasonable consideration of President Bush’s energy initiatives in his first term.  The reason why the Democrats couldn’t tolerate Bush’s plan was that they actually asked people who were in that industry for advice.  I trust that Nancy Pants hasn’t consulted anyone that actually knows anything about the industry to come up with her risky scheme.

But this got me to thinking.  This sounds real familiar.  Like the Soviet Union’s five year plans the Democrats keep coming up with the same old 10 year plans.  I imagine they probably think they’re really clever because they promise their results twice as far out as the Bolsheviks.

Anyway here’s the news from 1974, the same old promises from Democrats.  We’ve been waiting over 30 years for this promise:

I don’t have the exact date of the broadcast, but it was about a week after Nixon Resigning over Watergate and the day after Gerald Ford fired Nixon Counsel J. Fred Buzhardt.

Who does Nancy Pants think she’s fooling?

How did Democrats block Bush energy initiatives?
The Republicans controlled all branches of gov’t.

Woof: Your memory must be very poor.  They filibustered it in the Senate.  Duh.

If you don’t know by now, don’t mess with it.

There are plenty of domestic sources of oil; just let the oil companies drill for it!

The 2003 bill was filibustered with the help of six Republicans. Ten Democrats went with Bush.
The 2005 bill which passed, left out the sticking points of 2003, the MTBE liability waiver and ANWAR drilling.

You got required ethanol use.

It takes 60 votes to get anything out of the Senate, Woofie.

2003 Bill

Thirteen Democrats switched sides and supported the Republican majority in seeking to cut off the filibuster. Most of these were from mid-western farm states, where the ethanol lobby has pushed hard and has even won the support of Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle. Both Senators from Louisiana (both Democrats) also supported the bill, most likely due to their long-standing support of their states oil and gas industries.

Six bold Republicans crossed party lines to support the filibuster, providing the crucial margin that stopped the bill so far. Senator McCain from Arizona was joined by all five Republican Senators from New England.
