In Oregon the Department of Transportation has a policy of giving preferential treatment to bids on contracts made by minority-owned businesses. In fact, many of its projects include requirements for hiring minority-owned contractors.
In the past no specific minority was singled out for special treatment, but recently ODOT has started specific requirements for African American and Asian American-owned businesses.
Which, of course, ticked off businesses owned by minorities who aren’t black or Asian. One Native American contractor suggested: “We are now a minority that is being discriminated against.”
Of course, there’s a thin line between Gene being upset about other racial demographics getting special treatment and wondering why any specific racial demographic in particular should get special treatment. If ODOT includes Native Americans in the next project, what about female-owned businesses? What about Jewish-owned businesses? What about Muslim-owned businesses?
And if all of those groups are included, what about businesses owned by white men? Would would it be fair to give special treatment to businesses owned by every demographic except white men?
Wouldn’t it make more sense to forget about race or gender or religion and just hire contractors based on who can do the best job for the least amount of money?

I work night and day to see to this beautiful utopia, I eagerly await seeing my friends and family stepping to the side for a black man to come to the front of the line. When I think on it hard enough a tear of pure joy comes to my eyes, I bottle it and save it for a happier time when I can release it in a wondrous rainbow of *equality*.

It’s been what, 30 years since colored was the term used? I believe it’s black now man…watch some TV or read a newspaper…something. Because I know I don’t control any percentage of anything, I plan on eventually owning something. I plan to work for it. Work my ass off for it. If they want a slice of the pie they can work as hard as me for it, it shouldn’t be any easier for them then it is for me. It should be equally hard, affirmative action is racism and needs to be ended.

Ahem…as a white male who lives on a fixed income which is under what the average white males gets where I live (Canada).

As a white male who drives a 2003 Kia Rio not a Ferrari, who owns a TV that is a regular 27 inches I bought at Walmart ( not a High Definition flat wide screen ) et cetera…

I really do not feel like I own 98% of the world.

And I do not feel guilty that some white men are filthy rich just because my skin happens to be the same color as theirs.

Violent revolution is what *made* America, without it there would be no America. And as for Bullshit about oppression, America rebelled because we were getting taxed about 1/2 of what the mainland Britain was being taxed…the more you know!!

As for “playing the race card” That is ludicrous, and actually kind of funny. Someone has a different viewpoint then you and you throw a temper tantrum and scream Marxism, or you give word definitions because someone might misuse a word…which of course neglects all debates and makes them invalid.

Anything that attempts to equalize outcome, rather than opportunity(like the racial quota scheme called “affirmative action”) is Marxist; if you knew what you were talking about, you would know that Karl thought all human suffering was sourced in “class struggle”, and that equalizing outcomes(robbing the achievers to give to the non-achievers) was “better for everyone”. Anything that uses govt coercion to force outcomes is Marxist in origin, including your leader’s admonition to “spread the wealth”. Your Dem identity politics is Marxism in action, by pitting groups of people against each other for the obtaining and maintaining of political power. Marx prescribed “the dictatorship of the proletariat” for his system, which is exactly what you lefties want to do.
