The GOP Expects Us To Believe There Is No Double Standard For Craig And Vitter
What planet are these guys on?
Over the weekend a GOP leader, Senator John Ensign of Nevada, said that there was no double standard when it came to the way the GOP handled Craig as opposed to the way it handled David Vitter. He said that Craig “admitted guilt. That is a big difference between being accused of something and actually admitting guilt.”
Another GOP voice, Ed Gillespie, said, “The fact is that Sen. Craig pled guilty to a crime, and therefore was convicted of a crime. Sen. Vitter has not been charged with a crime, let alone convicted of one. So there’s a pretty big distinction here.”
Well, the crime Craig was convicted of, a disorderly conduct type charge, is a petty misdemeanor and the last I heard they don’t boot you from Capitol Hill over a misdemeanor. Hell, they can’t get William Jefferson to resign with a monster indictment staring him in the eye. Further, wasn’t Patrick Kennedy just convicted of a misdemeanor and entered rehab to cover his butt? I’m not sure if he was ever convicted of driving blind drunk that night but he admitted serious drug use.
That brings up another question….so, it’s alright for an elected official to admit hard drug use that was severe enough to require rehab but it’s not alright to plea to a misdemeanor disturbance? Really ratchets up the old confidence factor in our leaders, doesn’t it?
Anyway, back to the issue. There clearly is a double standard here. Vitter may not have been convicted – yet – but he did admit his involvement. So how in the name of common sense can the GOP claim they haven’t treated the two things differently? Vitter wasn’t charged with a crime but he certainly admitted to one, just not in a court of law. Again – yet.
I don’t just resent the hypocrisy of this stance. I resent the fact that they think we’re stupid enough to believe them when they spout this nonsense. It’s apparent that some of our elected officals truly think that we’ll swallow whatever garbage they try to force feed us. The arrogance of this is astonishing. Does the rarified atmosphere of Capitol Hill cause brain damage becuse of a lack of oxygen?
That’s the only explanation I can think of that would explain how they can say something like this with a straight face and expect us to believe it.
Unless they think that they are American royalty, because they certainly act that way. And when they speak all of us peasants should bow and listen. But – there is an answer for that. Two words. Term. Limits.
Happy Labor Day. Now get Back to work, peasants.
