Before Landis, there was the incomparable Lance Armstrong, the only 7 time winner of the Tour de France in history.

But it we should also remember that before Armstrong a remarkable American athlete by the name of Greg Lemond came back from a gundshot wound to the stomach to win the Tour three consecutive times.

Since the world’s premier cycling event takes place in France, it might be courteous and even appropriate if a French cyclist was allowed to win every so often.

To help facilitate an occasional French victory, I suggest that every tenth year the event should be run backwards.  After all, it is a well known fact that the French are exceedingly good at back-pedaling.

Doc Dave,

Those of us with a bit more “seasoning” may be inclined to picking our shots with more deliberation and selectivity, but we can damn sure still put one right between the eyes when the opportunity presents itself.

My guess is that the stench is so awful behind the French that nobody wants to be there to begin with. With something like that motivating you it would be hard to not finish at least in the top 5.

Greg Lemond came back from a gundshot wound to the stomach to win the Tour three consecutive times.

Actually, he won his first the year before he was shot.  He came back two years after the injury to win his second and followed up with the third the next year.

SteveL,

I misspoke, with no intent to mislead… and stand corrected.  Thank you.
