The Dems Take The Senate

If you were still holding out hope, it’s over.

Say hello to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

Democrats wrested control of the Senate from Republicans Wednesday with an upset victory in Virginia, giving the party complete domination of Capitol Hill for the first time since 1994.

Since 1994.

I hope you’re proud of yourselves, Republicans.

Allen is making any noises about a recount, and I think that’s for the best.  Unlike Democrats, Republicans generally know how to lose with grace.

Update: Some are already beating the “what if Lieberman changes parties” drums, but I just don’t see that happening.

I appreciate Lieberman’s principled stand on the war in Iraq.  It is a breath of fresh air in amidst the foul wreak of Democrat defeatism, but aside from his stance on national security Joe is a liberal through and through, and I just don’t see him abandoning that.  Not even to spite those who cast him from the party.

Of course, if he did switch it would keep majority control in the hands of the Republicans since the Vice President’s tie-breaking vote goes with the Republicans.  Which would be nice.  Democrats would want power sharing, but it would be easy to deny them that given that they already have a majority in the House.

Still, I don’t think it’s going to happen.

I found this in the NY Times opinion page. It has a pretty good message for GOPers. Time to get on message again. Time to get back to basics of what conservativism is.

To the Editor:

Now that the election is over, the Republicans might appreciate some advice: If you intend to regain power, consider getting back to basics. Lower taxes, more freedom and less government are what Republicans care about. Immigration and the Iraq mess are important, too.

Instead of paying attention, the leadership allowed members to engage in self-dealing beyond comprehension, allowed out-of-control spending and looked the other way as the system was abused.

More advice: Consider fielding candidates who care more about the people than lining their pockets with ill-gotten gains. It’s amazing what a few honest people can accomplish.

And finally, visit your G.O.P. Web site and read the section on what a Republican is, follow the basics and maybe, just maybe, you’ll be back in power one day.

So does this mean no Democrats will run for president in 2008? You know, because—and this is according to the Democrats themselves—one-party control of the government is a very bad thing.

Or maybe it was just a campaign talking point without any real grounding in any sort of principle. You decide.

Less than 4 hours after posting “Conrad Burns Not Conceding In Montana,” you claim, “Unlike Democrats, Republicans generally know how to lose with grace.”

Hilarious, did you read the Conrad Burns post?  That was a commentary on how the media is in much too much of a rush to declare winners.

I don’t think that Burns wanting to wait until all the votes were counted before giving up is all that ungraceful, nor is asking for a recall if the vote totals are really close.

Burns lost, no doubt about it, but what problem is there with just waiting until the voting process works through until the end?  Your Dems still won.  You can still gloat.  And while you do, Republicans won’t be filing lawsuits and the right’s equivalent to Keith Olbermann (whoever that is) won’t be slobbering all over himself about vote machine conspiracy theories.

Because we respect the system, unlike Democrats who take a “We win or you cheated” approach.

Rob, in the spirit of the day, I’ll stop gloating but you couldn’t blame me for having a bit of fun now could you.

Now in that spirit: enjoy!  http://freehugs.org/

I’d say Lieberman is more liberal than Clinton. ..aside from Iraq, I’d way he’s about as liberal as his neighbors to the north, Kerry and Kennedy.

Kent Conrad is going to be the budget guy… ish ish ish.

You North Dakotan may regard that as a great thing, however, I think that it is a horrible thing.

We conservative North Dakotans don’t consider Conrad being in charge of the budget a good thing.  Dude’s a tax and spend liberal.

No way, no how.

Quit crying in your beer. It doesn’t become youas stalwart freedom fighters.

The GOP still controls the executive branch and the Veto easily trumps razor thin margins in Congress.

Learn what ever lessons can be learned and look ahead to recapturing the Congress in 2008.

Follow Allen’s generous concession speec today.  The only thing he didn’t say was ” by the way, I’m going to run for Warner’s seat when he retires in 2008.
