The Big Lesson Of Election Night: The Shine Is Off The Obama Presidency

Ed Morrissey has what is perhaps the most important political point from last night’s elections:

Obama will still be president for another three years, but the mystique is gone. New Jersey just taught Democrats in Congress a big lesson — Obama can’t get them re-elected.

Liberals, of course, are going to focus on Hoffman as a failure for conservatism. But I don’t think that’s quite accurate.
Even though Hoffman lost, the GOP was sent a message. And that message, as James Pethokoukis pointed out yesterday, is that trying to cram liberal Republican candidates down the throats of the base is a non-starter.
It’s not going to work.
That in and of itself is a victory.

Juvenile namecalling, Rob? I guess you’re just revealing your true nature. I don’t agree with your obvious labeling of “homo” as anything negative. It’s an abbreviation for “homosexual”.
Your hate for me has deranged you, if all you have is this.
I don’t “claim” anything, btw;’ it’s the truth. I dislike their attempts to use violence, like in CA, to overturn the electorate to promote their destructive agenda, as should every freedom-loving American. Why are you sympathetic to those terrorists, Rob? Do you support using the courts to overturn the expressed will of the voters, Rob?

Once again, you fail to refute any of my arguments, Rob; instead you go for namecalling and personal attack.

    Quite telling.

Conservatives need to be conservative. We don’t need to win ‘em all. If we move to the center, we’re not conservative, and we’ve gained nothing.

  • http://SayAnythingBlog.com The_Whistler_ofnd

I would disagree with Robert, only that the Conservatives outnumber the
liberals, but we don’t have an actual majority calling themselves
    conservatives.

Hey gents, sorry to interrupt but I have a winning strategy for Reps for the rest of the Bambi’s debacle in the office. Drum rolls please.
Robert Gibbs said, well, he was actually watching, you know, the HBO special about his year-long campaign and how it all went.

So there you go… Every time there are elections or pre election speeches, just play something on TV about Bambi. His ego will demand that he must watch it. Someone should send him bunch of waffles also.

  • Hanni

    You are beyond help brother.

The exit polls showed clearly that the votes were not a referendum on Obama. Deny away.

NJ and VA for the last 6 presidencies have gone to the opposing side of the presidency.

    Yawn.

  • sayanything-7715

Imagine if Hoffman had the GOP behind him for two months and didn’t have a dropout RINO telling her supporters to vote for the Dem. The outcome would have been different. Plus, if Obama would have stumped for the NY23 Dem, Hoffman would have had the win.

Homos don’t meet the requirements for marriage. However, they have the equal opportunity to create a committed relationship that is tailored to their needs.
By hijacking marriage, they are depriving real married couples of the identity and place in society they have established throughout human history.

Still jumping to the next Soros talking point when your first one gets smacked with the truth? You tried to divert this thread from how Obama lost in this election, and got caught in your own BS.

  • http://fu.com/ robert108

As usual, you are wrong on the facts, con. Poll after poll reveals that a healthy majority of Americans describe themselves as “conservative”. That includes the so-called “moderates” and independents, who are both swinging to conservatism, as Obama’s extreme left wing policies continue to fail miserably.

You’re no centrist, con; you’re a typical leftie. See, conservatism is the center position between totalitarianism and anarchy. Limited govt, not all consuming govt or no govt at all.

It illustrates that the US is still the land of equal opportunity. Despite her handicap, this individual managed to achieve something in the political realm.

I think the conservatives have to stop letting the Democrats label them.
They can’t argue with mainstream conservative views as opposed to the
Democratic party. (Slightly smaller government versus big increases in
    government.)

But the Democrats label Conservatives as extremists and that drives off a
lot of voters that don’t pay enough attention that the extreme side is the
Democrats who want to take over more and more of the private economy.

We need to run on issues, not on labels because the Dems with the mainstream
media have the power to win that battle.

  • Hanni

60% of those polled said the vote in NJ was not based on Obama..it was not a referendum on Obama.

For the last 6 presidencies both VA and NJ have gone to the opposing party of the president.

NY, now that’s a different story.

  • sayanything-51

That’s one way to look at it, but it’s worth noting that all the kings nutters and all the kings nuttesses couldn’t put a victory on the table for the con/gop Teasters in NY.

You’re people had a con right in front of them and they rejected him.

    Your turn.

  • sayanything-51

The big lesson from last night’s NY 23 election is that the right wing extremists can force gops off the ballot, run a non-stop PR campaign on Pox, get right wing extremist icons like Palin, Dick Armey, LimbaughBeckLevinHanty et al to campaign for them, only to be defeated by a moderate Dem in a district that hadn’t gone Dem in over 100 years.

The gop/cons had a gop/con candidate on the ballot and he was rejected in a district that went gop last year by about 67%.

Wing nut Teabag extremism is not viable.
    The gop is leaderless.
The Democratic Party elected 2 more representatives to congress.
America is a better place this morning.

    Long live American democracy.

  • sayanything-51

    Really?

Ok then Sarah Palin and the Teasters lost in NY and CA.

  • j.l.

“Your people had a con right in front of them and they rejected him.” People of New Jersey and Virginia had libtards right in front of them and they rejected them. People of Maine had libtard gays in front of them and they rejected them.

“The warring factions of the GOP were beaten (barely) in New York.”

So at what point do “moderates” and “centrists” (people too lazy or stupid to be bothered to read a few books and pick a side) concede defeat? Hoffman got 45% vs. What’s-Her-Face who got 6%. 45 to 6 seems like the war is a bit lopsided.

  • http://sayanythingblog.com robport

Obama lost the two races, one in VA and one in New Jersey, where he campaigned the hardest for the Dems.

  • http://sayanythingblog.com robport

You know what’s funny, Big180? You claim your position on homosexual marriage has nothing to do with hatred or bigotry and yet you can’t help but refer to them derisively as “homos.”

    Quite telling.

  • sayanything-4416

It’s one of the innate characteristics of the conservative that they pull victory from defeat.

    In their minds!

Let me point this out AGAIN: Both of these states went from republican governors to democrats in 2001, AFTER 9/11 when bush was enjoying high (undeserved) popularity. In the fall of 2002 republicans GAINED seats.

Then there’s the fact that governors aren’t as ideological as congressmen. See, governors represent ALL people in the state, not just the suburbs of Orange County, the urban part of Portland, etc. They are almost always more moderate and thus LIBERAL. That’s why the stimulus package was supported by many republican governors. They knew they had to run a state’s finances, not just posture for their constituents.

The much bigger story is the loss in NY-23. That was a DIRECT hit on far right conservatives and their agenda. A MASSIVE defeat.

  • http://sayanythingblog.com robport

That’s one way to look at it, but its worth noting that the unified liberal efforts of Obama were beaten in VA and NJ. The warring factions of the GOP were beaten (barely) in New York.

    Not quite the same thing.

  • bikebubba

From some of the transparent lies coming out of 1600 Pennsylvania, I would have assumed that the “shine” was IN the Obama Presidency, if you catch my drift.

  • http://sayanythingblog.com robport

You’d be right if the ideaological bent of Americans were static. But it isn’t.

The way to victory for Republicans isn’t by betraying principle and trying to out-liberal the liberals. The way to victory is to bring those moderates to the right. Don’t try to pander, convince them that limited government principle is right.

  • sayanything-7134

Equal opportunity as long as they don’t want to get married

  • sayanything-7134

and thus you won dist 23….oh wait that was a loss. The independants hold the power in the country. They are a voting block that can go left or right and win elections. NOt to consider them is foolish in the extreme. Thats the reality. Rob is right if they can be swayed to the conservative side. Never expect them to be staunch core conservatives .They are fickle and pragmatic. The center position is between the wing nuts on the left and right. Both parties should be puckering up and kissing some independant booty.

  • sayanything-4416

Robs assessment of the shine being off Obama is quite correct. When Doonesbury and SNL start lampooning you ………. OUch

who are you trying to convince. us or you?

A wasted effort in either case. We know the truth and you can’t run from it.

  • sayanything-7134

It is still a numbers game. Only so many are staunch conservatives, you still need moderates and independants. We centrists are the ones you have to draw in and by our nature if something is radical too far left or too far right you lose us.
