“The right to bear arms is because that’s the last form of defense against tyranny.”

An eloquent and succinct defense of individual gun rights from an unexpected source, rapper Ice-T.

“It’s legal in the United States,” he said in response to a question about gun ownership. “The right to bear arms is because that’s the last form of defense against tyranny. Not to hunt. It’s to protect yourself from the police.”

Asked if he thought guns made shootings like the one in Aurora, CO easier Ice-T said “Not really. You can strap explosives on your body. They do that all the time.”

You could also drive a car into a crowd of people. Or start a fire. Or launch any number of other attacks.

This is a solid argument. Can murderers use guns? Sure. But potential victims can use guns to defend themselves as well. And since we know criminals aren’t likely to obey gun control laws, when we pass restrictions on gun ownership and possession, the only people we’re really disarming are law-abiding citizens.
