Texas School District To Let Teachers Bring Guns To School

Out of all the legislation and rule-making that has gone on in the aftermath of the school shootings that have afflicted this nation this rather common sense policy is the only one that makes sense to me.

HOUSTON - A Texas school district will let teachers bring guns to class this fall, the district’s superintendent said on Friday, in what experts said appeared to be a first in the United States.

The board of the small rural Harrold Independent School District unanimously approved the plan and parents have not objected, said the district’s superintendent, David Thweatt.

School experts backed Thweatt’s claim that Harrold, a system of about 110 students 150 miles northwest of Fort Worth, may be the first to let teachers bring guns to the classroom.

Thweatt said it is a matter of safety.

“We have a lock-down situation, we have cameras, but the question we had to answer is, ‘What if somebody gets in? What are we going to do?” he said. “It’s just common sense.”

Indeed it is.

The only way to stop a school shooter is armed response.  Unfortunately, such response is always going to be delayed in responding.  Which leaves us with two options: Either station a garrison of armed security guards in each and every school (certainly not a savory decision, nor a practical one from a spending standpoint) or you empower the staff already working in the school to exercise certain rights granted to them in the constitution.

Namely self defense, and the right to keep and bear arms.

Absolutely!!!  There is nothing more pointless… and dangerous… than bringing audacity of hope to a gunfight.

I would imagine the kids know which teachers to shot first, so they can have there guns also. Good idea.

I would hope the kids know the difference between past participle and present before they shot the teacher.

A fine example of an education that was shot!

buzz:  Most kids who bring a weapon to school are planning to kill another student or as many students as they can target.

Most often, school administrators, teachers and even college profs - as at VT - are shot trying to protect others.

No shit Einstein, if a kid plans on killing some other kids they will now have to kill the teachers with guns first. Take there guns and then go about there killing spree. None of them plan on coming out of the school alive anyway, so what difference if few teachers or administrators get killed along the way.
Its a stupid idea to arm teachers, who have no training. It will simply add another gun to the melee.

Buzzkiller; if a student or anyone else is planning on killing other students or teachers, then wouldn’t they have to be armed in the first place?

Also, note that this is a option for teachers not a mandate.  So, if a teacher wants to bring a weapon to school I think it is likely they would have some familiarity with using it.

Any teachers with guns would have to have a CCW permit, which requires they be trained. Strike 1. Two, there’s no possible way the kids could know which teachers were armed, and which aren’t. Or if a teacher even has his gun that given day. Strike two. Teachers and administrators are already killed in school shootings anyways. The VA Tech guy only killed himself when he ran out of victims. He still had bullets left. Same deal in Columbine. Only they had bombs. So ammos not an issue. Strike 3.

Your entire proposition is moronic. Why is arming potential victims a bad idea? When has a shooter ever sought out a mass shooting space unarmed, needing to kill others for their weapons? Never you say? How many shootings have happened with armed victims around? A few, but the shooter is always killed by one of the armed “victims”. Or taken captive.

It’s obvious the no gun policy isn’t stopping shootings. So we’re trying something else. Just be honest and admit you don’t want them to have guns and don’t give a damn about the victims.

Exactly right, Kenny.  Buzz seems to forget that had any VT student or professor been armed on the day of that tragedy, many lives might have been saved.

Principals, assistant principals, dept heads
should be issued bulletproof vests to protect
them from the faculty.

No shit Einstein, if a kid plans on killing some other kids they will now have to kill the teachers with guns first.

And how the fuck will they know which teachers those are?  Concealed weapons are… wait for it… concealed.

Take there [sic] guns and then go about there [sic]killing spree.

What do you care?  From your grammar, it’s obvious you and teachers aren’t exactly on speaking terms.  As has been pointed out, if they’re on a killing spree, they’re ALREADY ARMED.  And an unarmed teacher who tries to help their students is, as we’ve seen, more likely to die.  I suppose you’d prefer that teachers just cower and hide with their students and pray for the State to come to their rescue.

None of them plan on coming out of the school alive anyway, so what difference if few teachers or administrators get killed along the way.

And htat’s different from their attitude in any other such spree how?  Meanwhile, how many artmed teachers, having already heard gunfire, are going to be caught unaware and surprised?  Loud popping sound down the hall?  Hmm.... must just be a science experiment....

Its a stupid idea to arm teachers, who have no training.

Right… no teacher who chooses to arm themselves would ever dream of taking a… wait for it… FIREARMS TRAINING COURSE.

It will simply add another gun to the melee.

And guns are bad, except, of course, in the hands of our overlor… er… protectors....

Buzz, your an idiot.

I read your supposed thought on this, and had to shake my head in wonder how you think.

To own a firearm and be licensed, they would need to be trained.

The teachers that are carrying, would have a CONCEALED permit.

I highly doubt they would go around the classroom and say, see my gun.

Kids would not know who had a weapon and who didn’t, which makes it increasingly more difficult to walk in and think they can just shoot others like a fish in a pond. Some fish may shoot back - touble is...which ones.

Now, for a saner approach, not sure I agree with this notion of teachers carrying guns or not. Supposed school policy normally states not weapons allowed, hell I have seen them expell kids who bring a plastic knife to cut thier food with.

Besides, as much stress as these teachers are under, don’t need one of THEM to snap and whip out thier piece.

Is this school a cause for problems?
Known gang or trouble in the school?

I know, some will say Columbine never knew or was known for trouble…

Then perhaps adding more weapons to the mix is not the answer, but dealing with what causes these kids to want to bring a weapon to school and shoot everyone might be. Got a problem with bullies? Might want to look into that.

As I said, not sure where I stand on this. I agree things very well could have been different if those victims have been armed, but hindsight is always 20/20. Arming people and not dealing with the issues that cause the problems in the first place is not the solution.

Again, if teachers were stable people, I wouldn’t have a big issue with this, but given the stress they come under from kids and parents, sometimes I wonder.

I don’t know if this is a good idea or not at this point.

It is about dead gum time that let teachers carry a concealed weapon. This is long over due. Once again Texas gets it right!!

Souljastory on August 16, 2008 at 01:39 am

It could be a deterrent to would-be gunmen, they may look for a softer target - one where the odds are more in their favour. However, if they are bent on death in one form or another, they are more likely to go for the sniper or bomb option. It could make things decidedly more difficult for law enforcement.

Maybe people should stop trying to make people look bad because they accidentally misspelled a word or two and get to the point.
Students won’t have to smuggle guns into the school. They are there for the taking. And not every teacher is a saint. What would happen if one decides to lock the door in their classroom and shoot all of their students? Don’t try to say that they have registered weapons and know they won’t get away with it. That’s common sense. Anyone who shoots students at a school knows they aren’t getting away with it. So tell me how we can trust the teachers not to do anything stupid and I’ll listen to you.
