Take A Deep Breath

There’s a lot of anger going around right now, mostly on the left, about how much money our government is giving for tsunami aid.
For instance, this Colin Powell statement

“It’s going to take a lot more,” he said. “This is the time to make sure that we get a good needs assessment.” The death toll there has reached more than 114,000.

“elicited this response from David at ISOU:

While we “assess needs,” people are suffering Mr. Secretary.

I don’t get the anger. We’ve already pledged $35 million with private donations likely doubling that number, though we won’t probably ever have a very accurate accounting of those contributions. Now seems like the appropriate time to take a deep breath and start actually looking at what needs to be done instead of just throwing money at the situation.
And I, for one, am glad that our government is going to be cautious and accountable with the money spent on this situation given the fact that the area where we are sending the money is crawling with characters like this one.
I’d rather our charity dollars not find their way into his pockets.

“”…and it shows the world that we really care.”

It shows the world that politicians care when some f**ker from the U.N. calls them stingy. It has nothing to do with how much we care about the victims, because the American people have nothing to do with the size of the government’s gift. The $350 million is $350 million too much. If Americans care (and I think that they do), they should donate the money themselves, not have it forcibly taken from them so that the government can improve its image.

    More.

rick says, “…and it shows the world that we really care.”

And this is important because?… We show the world that we “really care” all of the time. The squabbling over this current and constantly going up dollar amount is nothing but pure pettiness.

being cautious with out tax dollars is good, but come one, 35 million??? thats close to nothing. compared to the hundreds of billions going to iraq, i think a good sum to start would be 500 million. it would should the world that we actually care.

Is there a current need for more capital? Are there planes waiting to take off, but they can’t pay the fuel bill? Is there a transport ship waiting to be requisitioned, if but for a bit more cash? Is ANYONE short 65 cents to buy Soda from the vending machine?

Seriously… Unless there is a desperate need to throw money away, lets asses the best places to add funds.

today the US government upped the donation to 350 million. its not throwing money away, and it shows the world that we really care.
