Symbolic: The First Bill To Pass Both Houses Of The North Dakota Legislature Is A Tax Increases

Written By:

We’re running huge budget surpluses, but if you’re a barber in the state you’ll have to pay more for your license. Because the greedy folks in the legislature don’t have enough money to spend.

It’s not controversial or one of the most important bills of the session… but a bill to increase the fees for licensed barbers gains notoriety today…

When Senators unanimously approved HB 1063 it became the first bill to get it’s final passage during North Dakota’s 2011 Legislative session.

Not controversial?

Is it appropriate for any fees (at the very least, those not associated with breaking laws) to go up when the state is running huge surpluses? Of course not, but it does illustrate the mindset of the powers that be.

Accumulate as much money in government as possible and give as little back in tax relief as possible.

Hold on to your wallets. It’s going to be an ugly second half of the legislature, I think, with a lot of disappointment in store for conservatives.
