Swine Flu Hype Is The Same As It Ever Was

Just to put some perspective on the current swine flu mania, here’s a PSA from the swine flu outbreak in 1976:

I know it’s something we should be taking seriously, but the melodrama and sensationalism is getting tiresome.

The hype of the swine flu is beyond ridiculous. Many blog “experts” are feeding the fear by passing on misinformation. It is the freaking flu people…get over it. As for the people who died, all had other complications that added to their deaths. What next..the h1n2 sun flu?

I agree. Swine flu, while it sounds nasty, seems like mostly hype.

If we are still talking about this in a month then maybe it’s worth looking into. Right now I chalk it up to the other distractions they’ve thrown at us in the last few years.

Maybe the concern is warranted, but they've got to balance that out with the crying wolf phenomenon.

Everytime they make a big deal about one of these (SARS) and it fails to live up to the doomsday predictions people are jaded for the next one.

I don't know what they do, because maybe this version of Swine Flu will be the pandemic.

In fact, the current outbreak of the H1N1 virus, which emerged in San Diego and southern Mexico late last month, may not even do as much damage as the run-of-the-mill flu outbreaks that occur each winter without much fanfare.

"Let's not lose track of the fact that the normal seasonal influenza is a huge public health problem that kills tens of thousands of people in the U.S. alone and hundreds of thousands around the world," said Dr. Christopher Olsen, a molecular virologist who studies swine flu at the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine in Madison.

It may be a real "crisis", or it may be yet another viral threat that occurs from time to time, but hardly lives up to the hyperventilation the media starts. I hope it is a false alarm, and I do think people need to exercise the same cautions they should exercise on any given day to protect themselves. I also think that the media and the government continue to hype these things to promote a sense of helplessness in people and to bolster their dependence on the government. IMHO

This instance is getting the royal "this time we really mean it" treatment because of all the deaths in Mexico.

Has anyone figured out why the death rate was so high there yet?

What they don't tell you is the health condition of the flu victims PRIOR to getting the flu bug. Typically the people that are most susceptible to the fatal effects of flu are people already in poor health.

This instance is getting the royal "this time we really mean it" treatment because of all the deaths in Mexico.

The World Health Organization (yesterday) came out and said that there are only 7 deaths in Mexico attributed to swine flu, not the 150+ that has been reported.

Flu kills an average of 36,000 per year in the United States.

This latest "pandemic" is all hype.

I think this is the ever biggest attack of swine flu. Can any one say that H1N1 virus a threat to the local government or to the people?

It was a big scare back then! What has happened now, it has gone with the wind, like most of these dramas. Time proves it wasn't as big an issue as originally thought.
