Support For A National ID

Spoons:

It's time for conservatives to give up their knee-jerk opposition to a single, unified method of identification for all American citizens and legal residents. Yes, there are drawbacks. Of course, there's potential for abuse. However, a National ID card would be invaluable in the War on Terror, it would be the single greatest tool we've ever had to fight illegal immigration, we'd be able to keep track of criminal records of illegals -- many of whom now use numerous variations of their complicated names (e.g. Jose Maria Vasquez Guadalupe de la Cruz, aka Jose Vasquez, aka Jose Guadalupe, aka Jose de la Cruz) to hide portions of their criminal records. A national ID would not require us to give up any essential liberties, but it would reap significatn security benefits.

LaMarr Alexander is now on board.

I agree, for all the same reasons.

We already have a National ID. It’s called a SSN

What was the last major step you took in your life that didn’t require the involvement, one way or another, of your SSN

Just a simple question. How is it that I am the problem? Why do I have to be catalogued and catagorized? Personally, myself, I have 6 sets of prints on file with the FBI. I have at least 4 sets on file with the DOD. Exactly how does that make me safe from terrorism? Why is it so vitally important for government agencies to know where I am, who I am associating with, and what I am doing every second of the day? These very actions are what make citizens cloak their movements, associations, and activities. The very people that the"government" claims to want to protect us from are the very people who can utilize a national ID system to their advantage. They are the people who operate under false IDs. A nationalized ID system is their wetdream. No longer would they have to swim their way through multiple layers of security. They need only breach 1! And do you really think they could not do so? We, as a nation, must take the neccesary actions. The terrorists, the drug cartels, the socialists and communists, we know who and where they are. If we, as a nation, are unwilling to kill these threats to all humanity, then they will consume us. National ID is a part of THEIR agenda.

I spit upon your national id card!
How about we pass and enforce strict immigration laws, secure our borders and how’s this for radical thinking,
only allow citizens to have drivers licenses! Legal residents could have their own version. Throw the illegals the hell out! They are breaking the law! This seems to address symptoms not the problems of certain states handing out drivers licenses to anyone walking in the door and lax immigration enforcement.
I do think a guest worker program is worth serious discussion but it would have to be a strict and enforcable policy.

Y’all miss the point… YOU (maxxdog and 2h9) are already “tracked” via your SSN, credit cards, mortgage etc. the additional burdens of a National ID would affect those outside the law.

These days, privacy is only protected by laws… Anonymity is mostly used by criminals

Perhaps I’m overlooking the obvious, but if I’m already being tracked, what does a National ID card provide?

This is akin to the issue I have with gun laws.  We don’t enforce the ones we have, yet we’re always wanting to pass more.

“If” we so desired, we could check SSANs through Social Security’s database in about 60 seconds.  Why don’t we concentrate on accomplishing THAT instead of stirring the unnecessary National ID card pot?

Regards…

Don’t think its a good idea.  I haven’t really heard about any real benefits it would provide.  And besides, who wants another layer of beuracracy?  It seems like the easiest way to increase the size of government these days is to just say “it will help fight the war on terror”.
