Subway Apologizes To Homeschoolers

I didn’t follow the story much, but for those of you who did Subway has apologized to home-schooled children for excluding them from a writing contest and has promised a new contest.

Glad to hear this also. Now to work on the State of Tennessee not recognizing home school HS diplomas for public works applications.

There were individual prizes as well. The home schoolers shouldn’t have been excluded from those.

All they would have had to do is to drop the grand prize to the top traditional school winner and everyone would have been happy.

We home educate… I think Subway’s reasoning was the $5000 playground equipment prize shouldn’t be going to an individual family.. My children and I talked and we said if one of them had been allowed to participate in the contest and had won, they would have chosen to donate the equipment to a domestic violence shelter or otherwise.

Subway could have done themselves a favor and worded this differently–such as saying a contest to include home educators would be forthcoming (and they also could have made sure they used spell-check when writing the ad for the contest–there were at least two spelling errors I found).

I’m glad they are willing to apologize and will have another contest soon to include home educators.

Our intention was to provide an opportunity for traditional schools, many of which we know have trouble affording athletic equipment, to win equipment.

That says it all. Subway owes home schoolers nothing. When you make the decision to home-school your children, you are implying that traditional local schools aren’t good enough for you. By doing this you are also excluding your children from certain benefits that may be available to students in public schools. You seem to want to have your cake and eat it, too.

Subway can do what it wants but its stupid to piss off a number of potential customers.

It was a dumb bunny business decision.

I don’t know that it was a real apology. Read it closely. They are apologizing that homeschoolers are offended; “we’re sorry that you’ve got thin skin”, more or less. I call that a thinly veiled insult, not an apology for wrongdoing. Moreover, I think the claim “we never intended to exclude” is directly refuted by their original information, which specifically excludes those who educate at home.

Not a huge deal for me. I don’t know what my family would do with $5000 in new fitness equipment, at least until the time comes for nicer bikes for the kids. Even so, wouldn’t it be nice if companies could issue a real apology one of these days? One that says “yes, we made a mistake, and we are fixing it now”, instead of “we apologize to anyone who might have been offended.”?

MEH, doesn’t matter to me, I always thought their sandwiches were generic excuses for subs anyway. For a real sub go to Maryland and stop at a Village Sub Shop!
