Stupidity In The Face Of Tragedy

Sigh"

Al Bawaba - A 150-member Israeli aid delegation canceled its mission to Sri Lanka on Tuesday, after the country - one of the hardest hit in the Asian tsunami disaster - refused to accept the Israeli team, Israel military officials said.

However, Israel is dispatching supplies at Sri Lanka's request, including 10,000 blankets contributed by the Israeli army, tents, nylon sheeting and water containers. The Israeli army's Home Front Command is organizing aid preparations.

Meanwhile, the Israeli humanitarian organization Latet ("To give") is sending a separate aid package Tuesday. It is filling a jumbo jet with 18 tons of supplies worth $50,000, at Sri Lanka's request.

The relief team that had been expected to depart for Sri Lanka on Tuesday included medical teams and representatives of the Israeli army and Defense Ministry.

The delegation was planning to assemble a medical facility comprised of specialist doctors, and to set up emergency, internal medicine and pediatric departments, as well as laboratory and X-ray facilities in the southern part of Sri Lanka.

Many will remember that Iran pulled a similar stunt during its earthquake tragedy which occurred one year ago almost to the day.

Yeah, that way when it’s all over they can show how none of the aid came from Jews. Then muslims will use that as an excute to hate them even more.

What the hell are you talking about? Sri Lankans are Buddhists u moron. Less than 7% of our country is muslim. People are wearing anything they can salvage. You have some nerve to comment on people’s suffering. We in srilanka Sympathized with you during 9/11. We have lost 10 times the lives lost in 9/11 and yet you speak of hate. As a Buddhist I have always believed that violence is never the answer to any problem. But today for the first time I feel that 9/11 happened for all the right reasons. And may god help a country like yours that breeds morons like you.

People are wearing anything they can salvage.

I see.  So wearing an Osama bin Laden shirt during this desperate time is fine but accepting a gift of Jewish soldiers to help clear streets and rescue the hurt and the dead isn’t.

Yeah, that makes plenty of sense.  I don’t see where Sri Lanka being Buddhist has anything to do with it.  Dumb is dumb.

And the airstrip defense doesn’t make any sense.  I’m the the ship could have dropped off the supplies and the personnel and then taken off again leaving the runway clear.

I think you’re just making up excuses.

The war against illegal plunder has been fought since the beginning of the world. But how is… legal plunder to be identified? Quite simply. See if the law takes from some persons what belongs to them, and gives it to other persons to whom it does not belong. See if the law benefits one citizen at the expense of another by doing what the citizen himself cannot do without committing a crime. Then abolish this law without delay … If such a law is not abolished immediately it will spread, multiply and develop into a system.

Sri Lanka seeks more foreign aid as food convoys roll out

Agence France-Presse

Colombo, December 30, 2004|13:16 IST

Sri Lanka on Thursday urged the international community to step up its financial aid to help tsunami relief efforts, as a convoy of food trucks left for rebel-held areas on the north of the devastated island.

“The current necessity is primarily for the supply of material and financial assistance, more than foreign relief personnel,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Colombo said.

Wealthy countries have already pledged tens of million of dollars in aid for the countries hit by the disaster in what the United Nations has said is expected to be the biggest humanitarian relief operation ever mounted.

The foreign ministry in Colombo said volunteer experts, including Sri Lankans and foreigners, were already monitoring aid work. Sri Lanka on Tuesday asked Israel to scale down a medical team, but to go ahead with sending urgent supplies.

A convoy of five trucks of the World Food Programme headed to the rebel-controlled northeastern regions of the country on Thursday, after a similar convoy left overnight.

The rebel Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) has also asked for urgent financial and medical assistance to help victims in remote areas.

The Government has said it is willing to provide assistance not only to those affected in government-controlled parts of the country but also people in rebel-held areas.

“Relief goods, medical supplies and personnel, including special aircraft received from Russia have already been deployed in the north and east,” the ministry said.

The Red Cross said it had already sent trucks with medicines and cooking utensils for the homeless.

The World Food Programme said it sent the first stock of 168 tonnes of food to 12 districts in Sri Lanka to help survivors.

Sri Lanka has mobilised its entire public service and the military into an internationally-backed relief operation to stave off hunger and disease, as the tsunami death toll neared 22,500.

The President’s relief coordinating unit said at least 22,493 people were killed in the worst tragedy to hit the nation, otherwise plagued by ethnic bloodshed that has killed 60,000 in three decades.

BTW the crew was rejected because Sri Lanka needs money, heavy lift equipment, medical supplies and unlike your report the 150 member party was a “military” delegation carrying no medics, medicines or equipment. We need to keep the airstrips(only a hand full and most cannot handle more than like 2 planes at a time) clear. Try to get your information str8. Again like I said Sri Lanka is a Buddhist nation (yes like the Dalai Lama) and there is no history of hate between Sri Lanka and Israel.

And from two posts ago

and unlike your report the 150 member party was a “military delegation carrying no medics, medicines or equipment.

Curious…

Pradeep, you’ve got me completely wrong.  I was refering to Rob’s statement about Iran.  I suppose I should have been more clear and sensitive to what people might have inferred from that comment.  I appologize for that.

In reality, I am on your side and agree that the US could be playing a smarter and more charitable role in the tsunami relief efforts.

That’s great, Pradeep.

One person makes a vague statement that’s misinformed and “9/11 happened for all the right reasons.”

If my mind was as warped as yours, I’d be calling for death to Buddhists.

You are a sad example of a person dealing with tragedy by striking out at the people who’s help you need most.

I’ve cried for Sri Lanka in the past days; how dare you make such a sweeping and hateful statement about my people?

“We in srilanka Sympathized with you during 9/11. We have lost 10 times the lives lost in 9/11 and yet you speak of hate.”

In the end, my country will have done more than any other to rebuild yours. Thank you for your sympathy.

“May god help a country like yours that breeds morons like you.”

After what has happened, God’s intentions toward morons is not a question you should ponder without bitter irony.

I feel no superiority for having been born in a rich and generous nation, but you owe me and my fellow Americans an apology for suggesting that we deserve to suffer.

I sit here and read and watch on T.V. how America didn’t do enough fast enough..etc,etc.  After almost 4 years since 9/11 listening to everyone tell us that America should not get involved in other countries problems and “butt out” when referring to Iraq, Afghanistan etc.  When we are remedying a man who KILLED thousands we are called infidels then when a Tsunami comes and kills thousands you hear people say “where is America”.  And without pause America was there.  Not blindly offering 1 Billion right away but deploying our water making fleet, our helecoptors, our man power, 35 million on the first day and 350 after the realization or a larger scale disaster had occured.  Did people then say “Wow, even while America is at war they come through for the world?” No, they call us “Cheap” and “Slow” when there is NO OBLIGATION of any country to HELP.  It makes me so angry that this world wants to label the USA the greedy, super power that “Butts in” when we are ONLY ones on the forefront of freedom and the rights of ALL people.

America is not perfect and yes there are a lot of selfish ignorant people here but no more than any other country on this planet.

Where is France right now?  Where is Germany?  Where is Russia, China or Korea?

Stop attacking the good guy and appreciate once in a while.

Agreed, Seth - although the poster does use a technique which is a pet hate of mine.

Rather than giving concrete examples and evidence to support the allegations of hypocrisy, the poster talks about ‘everyone’, ‘they’, ‘people’, et cetera, and as a consequence all we are left with are vague generalisations about ‘them’ and what ‘they’ think.

Please tell me who these people are!
