“Stimulus” Funds Weatherizing Homes In South Dakota At A Cost Of About $11,000 Each

I’ve long argued that, in a bill filled with stupid spending, the “stimulus” money used for weatherizing homes was perhaps the stupidest spending. How does paying to weatherize homes stimulate the economy? Can’t people do their own weatherizing?
But beyond the obvious stupidity of the bill is the amount we’re spending on it. In South Dakota they got $25 million to weatherize homes, and they’re “hoping” to do about 2,300 homes with it.
Which works out to almost $11,000 per home.

MITCHELL, S.D. (AP) Thanks to the economic stimulus legislation, South Dakota has more than 12 times the money it usually receives for getting homes ready for the winter, and officials say the goal this season is to weatherize 2,327 homes with the enhanced funding.
Before this year, the state usually got less than $2 million.
This year, it’s getting $25 million.
Last year, 565 homes were weatherized in the state.

Living in North Dakota, weatherizing the house for the winter is an annual tradition to go along with putting up the Christmas lights and eating Turkey on Thanksgiving. But I can tell you that weatherizing even a big house doesn’t cost anywhere near $11,000.
And one would think that people getting government aid aren’t living in mansions.

the going rate in fargo is $750 for a budget. a picture window will run you $1,5000. call anderson or whoever you like directly. in fact, call anyone and ask. so, it looks like you can pay for your commute in one job. place one ad in the forum saying $50 + cost for a window and you will have more work that you could dream. heck, charge $150 + cost of window and you will be booked for year. On an average house you could be making over $2,000 a day NET PROFIT. how about that bush recession?

Or you could just ship in reasonably priced materials from out of state. The prices you list are hugely inflated, why? No reason I can see, so someone, or something, is driving them up. That should be the focus, who is ripping you off, and how to put their a$$es in prison.

I remodel for a living, so yea. And if you are paying $750 for a vinyl replacement window you are getting ripped off. Unless it is REALLY big.

As for doing windows, I charge $50 per window, unless major frame work has to be done. I don’t install windows I didn’t measure, I measure exact to existing frame. Pull out old sashes, strip off stops, set new window, seal and trim. Should take less than 30 minutes per. I charge $120 per exterior door, unless major frame work is needed. It is a simple operation, take out old door and frame, slide in new door and frame, level it, plumb it, screw it. Seal around it and put the trim back on. Boom, your done.

And the majority of the houses I work are 50 or more years old. I hate new construction anymore. Low grade crap materials, low grade crap prints, low grade crap workers. Hell, we have a hard time finding anyone below the age of 40 who will actually work anymore.

I was wondering much the same. We had a similar program here in PA, and an audit found that the same residences were being “serviced” over and over by the same contractors, who all just happened to do the majority of their hiring through county employment offices. Been a few changes. But it remains that tax dollars are being squandered, on a massive scale, to do very minor work on low income rental properties.

Meanwhile, several utility companies in PA run home improvement/weatherization projects which are doing major upgrades to older homes, and to newer ones, and costing tax payers zero. Imagine that.

Anderson Windows are good, and expensive, just as Pellas are. Certainteed makes excellent replacement windows, all vinyl and wood/vinyl. I won’t put metal frame windows in up north, they suck the heat right out of a structure in winter. We have 3 companies in PA that make new construction and replacement windows, to order or you can buy stock sized windows. Certainteed has a stock 32×64 double hung window that fits like a charm in most older homes. Just pull the old sashs and strip the stops and case moulding off, slide new window in, set&seal it and trim it, and SHAZAM. Don’t even have to pull the interior or exterior trim off, or curtain rods and blinds. I love’em.

unless you live in a 500 sf home, $11,000 could not do crap in your house. your electrical panel alone would cost you $2,000…. thats just the box and hooking EXISTING wires to it.

  • jimmypop

because its free. people would not do it otherwise. just like geothermal. sure, the savings are HUGE, but nobody can afford the install costs. further, you cant make your money back in a reasonable amount of time. the roi never make sense on stuff like this around here. maybe in new york, but energy is free around here.

before you comment you should call a contractor and get REAL bids to do work on your house…. here are some good budget numbers; each window you replace would cost $750. picture windows can cost thousands. Insulation of your attic, around $2,000. maybe more. new furnace, $4,000 to as much as you want to spend.

my point; you can piss through $11,000 on upgrades in home in a hurry and get next to nothing done for it.

here is the question you should ask; how quickly does that $11,000 return? if you ask THAT you will be shocked….. it is probably 20 years…. this is why nobody does this with their own cash. they know its a total waste.

please give me the name of the roofing contractor and window contractor. if anyone can do a window thats worth putting in for $200 and make money doing it, i have lots of buildings for them. to start they can do my whole house and at least one friends home as well. if it $200 i know of two or three others that would certainly consider hiring them. the windows (no labor) i am looking at are $225 each. Even at lowes just the window (no labor) cost $250.

if you are doing this yourself and its worth your time, you need to go into business. you will be rich. no, i am not kidding. richer than your wildest dreams. you will have more work than anyone in fargo. again, not kidding.

yes, i am serious about needing the contractors name.

I live in western PA, be a bit of a long commute for me!

  • sayanything-2

For $11,000 you can install all new windows and doors, add insulation, and reroof a house. Is that what they are doing?

  • http://proof-proofpositive.blogspot.com/ proof_positive

Eleven grand! You can buy a whole house in sunny Detroit for $7,500! Maybe they should organize a move to Detroit and save some money?

  • sayanything-2

And to top this off, replacement window and door manufacturers are running major price reductions and rebates, on account of the economy being down, so you can get excellent deals. Somewhat the state of ND should probably look into.

  • jimmypop

so, when do you open an office in fargo? as i said, per your numbers you will make $2,000 a day net profit. thats $40,000 a month with your numbers. $480,000 a year.

lets say you only work half the time and half the profit….. you make $125,000 a year. again, using your numbers. seems like a no brainer to move here and make that in 6 months.

  • sayanything-2

Wow, you are getting ripped off. You should sue the a$$ that is charging you that much.

c*ntnundrum, what over priced sh^thole do you live in? Vinyl frame replacement windows average $200 a piece, a decent exterior door $300, and I just put a metal roof on my house, all materials totaled $1400 and $550 in labor. Makes a world of difference when you know how to do things yourself, and don’t live in some massively overpriced Democrat sh*thole.

  • sayanything-7134

give me you contractor 2/9 Thats a hell of a deal. Is there a breakdown in costs as far as material, labor and SUPERVISORS

  • http://sayanythingblog.com robport

I’m willing to bet that most of these funds are going to the people who are “administering” the funds.

  • http://sayanythingblog.com robport

I don’t know how much it costs to out in new windows. Question is, why are the taxpayers paying for this?

  • sayanything-4808

Rob: “I’m willing to bet that most of these funds are going to the people who are “administering” the funds.”

Where does ALL the money they spend on EVERYTHING go? If private charity spent as little a percentage of their donated take on the actual needy as our welfare system, people would have shown up at The United Way HQ with torches and pitchforks decades ago. Rough estimate per person either gender any age below poverty line: $20K worth of welfare spending, $15K actually received per every three. MAYBE.

BTW, for $11K I could rip out all the plaster lathe in my house, rewire electrical, insulate, sheet rock, and paint. I’d still have enough left over to seal all the windows’ mounts.

  • sayanything-7134

    unforturnately you are quite right.

  • augustt126

what organization is managing the funding? how do you apply for the funding? who does the analysis on your home? do certain contractors have contracts with the state? It is only air sealing and duct sealing
