Steve Irwin Dead At 44

Not sure how many of you have followed his work, but if you did you were probably a fan.

Steve Irwin, the "Crocodile Hunter," is dead.

I know my daughter will be sad. We used to catch his show all the time at my parent's house on cable. She's a fan. Used to march around the house saying "crikey" all the time.

Man, that’s really too bad.

The guy was a complete nut and handled animals and poisonous snakes that I wouldn’t get anywhere near. (It is my considered opinion that an unexpected encounter with a snake is the one thing that can make even a strong man squeal like a girl.) Yet he did it with a joy that was fun to watch.

I think its unfortunate that he died but he died doing what he loved to do. In the end how many of us will have that said about them?

Godspeed, Steve Irwin.

I never liked the way Irwin treated the animals. It was always foolish and disrespectful to them. You might say he was a self-pleasing strutter. His end was just a consequence. No loss for mankind at all ...

Jim,

At least he didn’t eat the damn things.

Besides, the world is far worse for the loss of Steve Irwin than it would ever be for the loss of one more snake or crocodile.

Sharks , jellyfish, sea snakes, sting rays , everything in Austraila kills you.
even the platypus.

male platypuses will try to stab an attacker with hollow spurs on their hind legs. These spurs are connected to a sac containing poison strong enough to kill a dog.

WOOF on September 4, 2006 at 09:36 am

meh .... don’t get me wrong,  but crocidile hunter was nothing compared to my generation’s Marlin Perkins .  Once a week this gentleman would host Mutal Of Omaha’s “Wild Kingdom”  Classic stuff.

He had a underling named Jim Fowler who always had to hand the dangerous stuff.

“Watch out, Jim those teeth are sharp!” Is a classic line.

Jim,

He spent millions of what he made handling those animals on a private sanctuary so that animals could live their entire lives in a protected environment. Your statement shows not only a lack of human compassion, but an inability to see the big picture.

you guys ever stop to think the crcodiles would rather be left alone in peace ?

Oh puh-leeze….

Jim and Tyler,.....you guys go have a burger, or maybe a steak, or perhaps some nice eggs (ever seen an egg farm?) and discuss how Steve Irwin was mean to animals.
Do you think those animals suffered some form of animal psychological trauma from being handled a bit? What, did it give a crocodile a complex or a snake some form of neurosis to be picked up? No harm was done. They don’t need psychiatric care on little animal couches.

Some perspective: That leather belt you’re wearing and those leather shoes or the seats in your nice SUV weren’t exactly donated by grateful barnyard creatures.

Some more perspective: That guy educated and entertained millions of kids who will understand the animals in this world far better than we ever did.

Before you snipe any more at this guy, take a trip to a slaughterhouse. And check the pictures of his kids.

Pilgrim on September 4, 2006 at 11:55 am

Pilgrim: Not only that, but consider the reality of the life of an animal in the wild.  For the prey species, every day brings the possibility of being killed and eaten, or of being eaten alive.  Over time, it’s almost absolutely guaranteed.  Very few animals in the wild die of old age.  Every day is a struggle for survival.  For the predators, a meal is never guaranteed, and injury resulting in death from starvation or infection is a daily possibility.  Not so for animals in captivity.  It’s not about cruelty, it’s about freedom.

This is very sad indeed. Although I obviously didn’t know him personally, he always seemed like a really nice guy to me. He was always positive and enthusiastic no matter what the situation. As for the idiots who are happy he’s gone, I think you’re very distasteful and rude. Like the guy or not it’s not like he was some kinda evil dictator or whatever. He did more to help people understand and respect animals than PETA could ever hope to accompish (which I suppose isn’t really saying much).

Anyways, I wonder how long it took to get him, that barb had to hurt…there had to be someone with him or something…

SS, apparently he died pretty much instantly. The venom on a ray’s barb is a neuro-toxin and it struck directly into the heart. A one in a million hit. He probably had time to realize what had happened before he was gone. There are far worse ways to die.

Look, I don’t agree with Tyler about Steve Irwin, as my first post indicates, but that is neither here nor there.  There is a certain civility that I think should be used to express disagreement with someone, and that civility has been absent in this debate.  Words like “leftard” are, for lack of a better description, just plain silly, and are no better than the idiotic “Bush is a Nazi” chant we hear so often out of the far left.  Neither description advances anything beyond a perception that the person using the term(s) can’t debate properly.

2Hotel9, there are probably far more issues on which we would agree than those on which we would disagree.  That said, I still think that the language used here really doesn’t accomplish anything.

I know, I know but you have to ask the question why…
Its not like he is Jacques Cousteau. He saved crocodiles there are lots of places that do. He bought lots of land and houses he was mostly great at marketing himself and his zoo. Most of us hated him because he portrayed Australians like Paul Hogan “throw another shrimp on the barbi”.

That’s petty.

The man was who he was. I doubt very many around the world believe that he represented little else but himself. The guy was that unique.

No its not petty, its true. He used it as a form of marketing himself. Australian venacular is an easy thing to attatch to “crikey”. What miraculous things did he do?  Handle a snake? Dangle his baby in front of a croc?  My son will look at this and think its great to be bitten by a snake but will it teach him how important it is to save the animals. I dont think so. I think he is more likely to say “crikey”.. Are you going to donate to his animal fund?

If I am mistaken, sorry. jim and tyler are tossers, no fucking doubt about that. And yes, I have friends in AU and NZ who think the man was less than sterling. He marketed himself shamelessly, made a great deal of money, and spent a great deal of it to the benefit of Australia’s wildlife and people. He knew the risks, and took them with abandon and gladness in his heart.

Steve’s message is that all life is precious.

We all have opinions; that’s what makes us unique. Those who have negative comments about Steve, he would most likely say about them;

“I love those blokes! I’d kiss them on the lips if they’d let me but they are what they are and they would just as soon snap me in two if given half the chance! I love ‘em so much! If they were in trouble; I’d come flat out like a lizard drinkin’ to their rescue!”

I’m an ultralight trike pilot; see his movie.

I love you all.
