Speaking of Democrats and Healthcare Plans…

Just how little Democrats are acquainted with the basics of free market economics was again on display yesterday as Senator Hillary Clinton ratcheted up the rhetoric against rising gas and oil prices, while threatening to break up the OPEC cartel, according to Ben Smith at Politico.com.

“We’re going to go right at OPEC,” she said. “They can no longer be a cartel, a monopoly that get together once every couple of months in some conference room in some plush place in the world, they decide how much oil they’re going to produce and what price they’re going to put it at,” she told a crowd at a firehouse in Merrillville, IN.

“That’s not a market. That’s a monopoly,” she said, saying she’d use anti-trust law and the World Trade Organization to take on OPEC.

Now, rhetorical excess in a close campaign is nothing new.  And OPEC is certainly a cartel… but it is certainly not a monopoly.  There are quite a few non-OPEC oil producers, including China, Great Britain, Canada, Mexico, Norway, Russia, and the United States.  And certainly anyone who believes Mrs. Clinton’s nonsense about breaking up OPEC deserves the coming lesson in reality.

Still, it fascinates me that she rails about the evil of monopolies, yet her own mandatory national healthcare plan is itself nothing more than a government mandated monopoly, with no options, no choices, and no freedom for individual consumers to say, “No, thank you!”

Democrats are such unwitting hypocrites!

Let me tick off a liberal. They already pay for my health coverage. I am retired from the United States Navy.

Unlike conservatives we liberals are happy to pay for your health care.

Also if you know of a homeless vet
let them know

U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Secretary James B. Peake and U.S. Housing and Urban Development Deputy Secretary Roy A. Bernardi today announced $75 million to provide permanent supportive housing for an estimated 10,000 homeless veterans nationwide.

WOOF - Unlike conservatives we liberals are happy to pay for your health care.

This, coming from the socialists? The problem with you guys is that you don’t pay for others. You demand that others pay for others.

Now stop lying WOOF.

What does Hillary propose that we do, boycott OPEC?
Start a war for oil?
Ask them pretty please can we have more oil?

Write your senators & representatives & tell them to support Domenici’s bill.

Dear Woof,
I actually earned it. Now for the other part. When I was working in the Aircraft Industry in Wichita, the long-standing union memebers tended to get irritated at the thought of some of their tax dollars were covering my supplemental to the company plan. Let me guess, Liberals!!!!!!!!
They do not like those of us who have worn or do wear the Uniform of this Nation. We are considered to be illiterate and unable to do anything else. i volunteered in 1973 with a lottery number in the last draft(CLASS OF ‘72). Initially I didn’t plan on a career. And yes, I was a liberal democrat. After a reality check, that changed.
To realitybasedbob, happy to do it for you.

rigger45.  Great story.  Yes, we earned our TRICARE for ourselves and our wives.
OPEC is not a monopoly.  Only a government can mandate a monopoly, or people like the mafia or urban gangs who try and corner the market on prostitution, drugs and gambling.  When the market is free, to enter and exit the competition, prices come down.  Governments in the ignorance, attempt to control the laws of supply and demand.  For the last century in the USA, these people were Democrats, Socialists, Liberals and communists.

rigger 45,

Welcome aboard… and Thank You for your service, Sir!  As you’ve noted, along with Chief, liberals are not entirely at ease with the concept of earning benefits, as opposed to having them handed out by self-righteous Pooh-bahs to assorted groups of society’s victims in exchange for votes.

Nice post...again.

Here’s a cruller to chew on after reading this post and these comments.

No producer of a single thing sets price in a market. The decision to purchase a product, while determined in large part by its offered price, is made by the purchaser of the product. Or, to look at it another way, by the non-purchaser of the product.

That may seem convoluted. Okay. It’s not always simple to look at price theory.

Let’s say you make banana cozies. And, unless I’m mistaken, were you a banana cozy manufacturer, you would own a monopoly in the banana cozy industry. You can make ‘em for a nickel, and sell ‘em for a buck. Pretty good return on the investment, no?

Prollem is, last time I checked, the world demand for banana cozies was low. Real low. So, even if you could manufacture thousands of banana cozies at a nickel a piece, who cares?

Let’s look at this another way…

When was the last time you got a coupon for iodized salt? Or, went into a market and saw “Salt/59 cents!”

When did the price of salt ever enter into your decision to purchase it? And do you care that salt production is the product of a monopoly?

Nope.

Just like the banana cozy manufacturer, the monopolistic salt manufacturer knows one thing. Set your price too high and substitutes will replace your product. Produce a product nobody wants, and vast crowds of no one will beat a path to your door. Personally, I think that is why so many people use berets as banana cozies. Itsa cozy and, it has Continental flair.

Senator Clinton: Ready to Mislead You From Day One.
