Some How, Some Way, ConvictedSenator Ted Stevens Gets Re-Elected

Does anyone have a stake?

Ed Morrissey says he’s not sure how to feel about that. I see where he’s coming from, given that the GOP is going to need every vote in the Senate they can muster to hold up Obama and the Democrats, but I know exactly how to feel about this.
Republicans just came off a crushing defeat, and a big reason why they were defeated is the sort of corruption and big-government policies embodied by people like Ted Stevens.
The citizens of Alaska are free to choose whoever they want to represent them in the Senate. There’s nothing the GOP can do about Stevens getting re-elected. But the GOP doesn’t have to work with this crook. And refusing to work with him, and making a big deal out of that refusal, could be the party’s first step in the right direction after the gloom of yesterday’s losses.

It’s possible that the voters of Alaska looked at the prosecution, found it based on thin evidence and mostly motivated by “gotcha” politics and preening prosecutors, and decided that they would choose their own Senators, thank you very much.

They have already thrown out Murkowski, so it’s not an allegiance to corruption. They probably just resent a man they know and like being railroaded.

    Nevertheless…

Please have the dignity to resign, Senator. Yes, you can wait until the moment allows you a little cover and salvaging of pride, but leave!

Fly, Pomaderograd kinda nails it for me. Stevens was convicted of lying to prosecutors, more or less the same “crime” for which Martha Stewart served time.

Now while it’s not commendable to lie to prosecutors, it’s worth noting that it’s not a crime for the prosecutor to lie to you. He might get a reprimand at worst, but even that is doubtful.

Reality is that Stevens probably should have lost due to his taking of favors that obviously are not available to Alaskans as a whole, and if he somehow escapes jail, he should find his pork pipeline turned off.

Reality is, though, that the favors Stevens received are of the same type and magnitude as those our new President received from Tony Rezko, those Byron Dorgan and others received from Countrywide, and so on. We’ll get this mess cleaned up when we start insisting that those who take these favors leave DC, and not before.

But, but, but,,,, Ted told the voters he had not been convicted. Who are they going to believe, a jury of their peers? Or their sugar daddy. This is exactly the same as William”DollarBill” Jefferson in New Orleans. Exactly. The. Same.

There is also that provision in the constitution that bars the hindering of legislators during sessions. The same thing that Patrick Kennedy used when he was drunk driving and got off the charge a few years ago.

    Jerry,
Before you fall off the soap box you’re on, jefferson, the democrat from Louisiana (Yes…the one with the BRIBE CASH IN HIS FREEZER), was re-elected as well.

  • http://sayanythingblog.com/readers/author/realitybasedbob/ realitybasedbob

Looks like Young and Bachmann will keep their seats too.

  • Rich

Does this mean if he gets sentenced to prison and can’t fulfill his term in the senate, Palin can appoint herself to the seat?

  • http://www.ski-blog.com/ sayanything-24

Ted should be punished for what he did, I said earlier he should be in the pokey, but I’m not sure that they should put an 84 yr old man in jail. He should be punished somehow, though.

Simply resigning is probably enough. I am not sure that anyone will care after he resigns.

Isn’t he supposed to go to jail for what he did? That would suggest that someone in AK government would get to choose his replacement, no? That might explain some of it.

  • http://www.bikebubba.blogspot.com/ Bike Bubba

Jerry, the left should shred the GOP over this.

Right after they take care of business with “Dollar Bill” Jefferson, Barney “Pimp” Frank, Byron “cheap mortgage” Dorgan, Barack “buy the house with me Tony” Obama, Charles “Rent Control for the Rich” Rangel……

….the ugly reality is that the difference between Stevens and a lot of other people in Congress is that he got caught by a good prosecutor. The others didn’t.

Let’s set our sights for getting rid of all of ‘em.

  • FlyOnTheWall

Assuming Stevens guilty and evidence pretty firm, what kind of guy is Begich that loses given that advantage?

  • Jerry

Somehow, someway, convicted senator Ted Stevens gets Re-Elected.

And, Republicans “wonder” why they’re in trouble.
Does anyone honestly think this kind of stuff can be adequately explained to some Numbskull trying to figure out his vote? This is main course Cannon Flodder for the Left to shred you silly over.

No way to justify this kind of Idiocy.

  • kbiel

This could turn out to be a good thing if done right. The GOP senators must bring a motion to expel, not just censure, Stevens. That will put the Dems in a bind. They want Stevens there. They want him to be their effigy of the GOP that they can punch over and over again to “prove” how corrupt and venal the Republicans are. They will be reluctant to go with the expulsion, but if they don’t, Stevens will become their tar-baby. On the other hand, if they go along with the expulsion, then the Dems will be helping the GOP to rehabilitate their image, but only if the GOP lead the charge.

  • di butler

Please note my 2nd post. The governor of Alaska does not decide who is put in Stevens place. They changed the law in the state some time back, due to some nepotism. It is done by a panel. I don’t know who all is on the panel, how they are appointed to the panel. Maybe someome here will get motivated and look up all the exacts.

  • Jerry

    Jerry,
Before you fall off the soap box you’re on, jefferson, the democrat from Louisiana (Yes…the one with the BRIBE CASH IN HIS FREEZER), was re-elected as well.

Tex. Call it a soap box, if you will. Nothing excuses it.
Just because braindead Democrats want to keep crooks like Jefferson, Frank and other criminals around, doesn’t make it OK for Republicans.
Hey.. You want to rub up to these kind of guys? Go ahead.

  • di butler

I would be really p.o. if they had been voting to keep Uncle Ted, but they were just trying to hold his seat. They will have a panel to elect someone for the seat soon, so I can live with it. Ted needs to go to the pokey.

  • Wookiebush

Well Di, in most states, the govenor apoints the senator and the state legislature aproves. Gee wonder who that govenor is…heh Sarah will put in a good conservative.

  • RebTex

    Jerry,
Until the excesses are flushed out & the perps walked in front of the public, nothing will change.
    THat includes ALL the perps.

  • http://www.mattsconservativecorner.blogspot.com/ Matt

Sadly I think the same thing would happen here if Conrad or Dorgan were ever convicted.

  • di butler

I am not surprised that Stevens got re-elected. The people of Alaska love him, call him Uncle Ted. He has been in office since McCain was in diapers. He is 84, for heaven’s sake. I told ya’ll in my post earlier, the people decided that they would vote for Ted, then appt. someone else so they could hold the seat. I don’t know how they run things there, I think it’s their right to decide. Ted should be punished for what he did, I said earlier he should be in the pokey, but I’m not sure that they should put an 84 yr old man in jail. He should be punished somehow, though. I do think we should hold ourselves to a higher standard though than the Dems do. It is just annoying that when someone with an R next to their name does something it gets blown all out, but not when they have a D, not so much.

  • http://ndgoon.blogspot.com/ goon

Looks like Young and Bachmann will keep their seats too.

Bachmann didn’t do anything wrong, he has been convicted of nothing. Her so called crime was she dared question the one and she won. Hum, doesn’t sound like a rejection to me.

  • Concerned

Ted Stevens was re-elected even though he has been convicted. if he goes to jail, is there a possibility of Senator Sarah Palin?

  • di butler

    Wookie,

It used to be the way it was done in Alaska, but some goober put his daughter in office, and they decided that it seemed a little nepotistic. So now they do some sort of panel thing.

  • imagine

Concerned, if Stevens leaves his seat I believe Palin appoints a replacement. I doubt she’d appoint herself, and frankly the Governor spot is a better position from which to run for the White House.

I endorse this idea. I think it is a great idea to run Palin in 2012.

  • HG

    Hear, hear!

Well said Rob. This not the pragmatism principle allows.

  • 2Hotel9

Ted is getting set to go to jail, then a replacement will be appointed to fill his term.

  • DBO

Isn’t it odd that congess has a 9% approval rating yet so many incumbents were voted back in to office?

  • http://sayanythingblog.com robport

I think it is a great idea to run Palin in 2012.

    Bold words, sir. We’ll see.
