So, Can We Call The Democrats Unpatriotic Yet?

Remember when Joe Biden said that was time for Americans to be patriotic and pay more in taxes?

Now Gateway Pundit is asking if, given the tax woes of Obama’s cabinet picks, it’s ok to question these people’s patriotism:

First, it was Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner who didn’t pay taxes and lied about it.
Then it was Health and Human Services nominee Tom Daschle who ran into a little glitch when it was discovered he didn’t pay taxes either.
Hey… nobody’s perfect!
Now, it’s first chief performance officer nominee Nancy Killefer, who failed for a year and a half to pay employment taxes on household help.
She withdrew her candidacy today.
So, Can we question their patriotism yet?

By Joe Biden’s standards I guess we should be questioning their patriotism. But then again, we all know there are separate standards for Democrats and the rest of us.

The remark was not meant to apply to people who didn’t realize they were supposed to pay taxes on something…

Oh brother…One of the FIRST things that was taught regarding the law, at least when I was a teenager, is that IGNORANCE IS NO EXCUSE

  • http://insanereindeer.blogspot.com/ Kenny

If you truly believe it was an oversight, as many Republicans and FOXNews anchors do, then it was not cheating and Biden’s comments to not apply.
If you want to be partisan and deny that it was a mistake and an intent to defraud the government, then you can call into question their “patriotism”, according to Biden’s comments. And not even so much that it applies.

It’s beyond ludicrous to call it an honest mistake, at least in Geithner’s case. Hs company tells him “You owe this ammount in taxes. Fill out this form and we will give you the money to pay your taxes.” He filed out that form, and then pocketed the money. If he underpaid, I could almost believe that was an honest mistake. But not paying ANYTHING, and going out of his way to defraud his company out of the money. That’s tax evasion. And it is a crime.

And you’re spinning your head off. “Biden only meant this to apply to people who didn’t want higher taxes.” You know, then it applies to people who don’t want to pay WHAT THEY OWE TOO. If you’re unpatriotic for not wanting to pay higher taxes, then you’re a freakin traitor for not wanting to pay the taxes you owe.

The Politicians and especially Liberal Dems have been asking US Tax Payers to lay more & more of Our hard earned money at the Altar of the Fed Govt. They got caught cheating and they need to be held accountable. I think every Politician starting from the POTUS on down should be audited and FORCED to Pay their Taxes just like the rest of us. They give themselves benefits that the rest of US are not privy to. That is Not Patriotic if you ask me!

  • Hawk

In fact, it’s patriotic to not pay taxes which are assessed for non-Constitutional purposes, like the vast majority of social spending.

Your understanding of the Constitution is clearly lacking. Spending is allowed for the “general welfare.” It may or may not be sound policy, but it is not unconstitutional.

  • Hannitized

    Oh brother.

The remark was not meant to apply to people who didn’t realize they were supposed to pay taxes on something, or people who are have made errors on their taxes.

It was supposed to mean that people who aren’t willing to pay a larger percentage for making more.

All of the people whom the taxes will be raised, will have to be willing to pay them, and of course many people will make mistakes and look for ways out of paying taxes through loopholes or through creative ways of filing.

That or be like Tom Daschle and just not pay them! Funny that little Tommy knew he had to claim driver’s as an income when he was a Senator, but magically “forgot” he had to claim it when he was out of office. My bullshit meter is screaming! Anyone else?

  • 2Hotel9

Sorry, Jules, everyone Barri will nominate is dirty. They are Democrats and anti-American scumbags, every, single one of them.

  • http://vdvfamily.com/ Sphagnum

It was supposed to mean that people who aren’t willing to pay a larger percentage for making more.

By these people cheating on their taxes, doesn’t that by definition mean they weren’t willing to “pay more for making more”? They made large sums of money and paid a lesser share of taxes than required by law… and none of these examples can possibly be spun as “accidental” with the possible exception of SOME of Dachle’s tax problems (ie, the driver thing). But the other two were 100% cheaters and they got caught! So they are unpatriotic in Biden’s mind.

  • jimmypop

It was supposed to mean that people who aren’t willing to pay a larger percentage for making more.

yes. it was pointed at dirt bag people like Daschle. lets say D just f’ed up (and he didnt)… he knew he had messed up as early as JUNE LAST YEAR, but he just paid his taxes NOW!?!??!?! If hes just a good honest guy, why didnt he cut the check prior to barry being put in? Your boy, like many of your other boys and girls, knew exactly what they were doing. they also knew the repubs would dig this stuff up so they had to pay.

Biden never stated that the people who cheat aren’t patriotic, because nobody cheats on the majority of taxes they pay.

But I don’t think anyone of us knows for sure, so you have to either trust a guy who has never made a mistake in all his years as a taxpayer or you can believe he is lying.

Most reasonable minded people agree this was an honest mistake.

  • Hannitized

Oh brother…One of the FIRST things that was taught regarding the law, at least when I was a teenager, is that IGNORANCE IS NO EXCUSE…

Nobody said it was an excuse. I just said that it was the difference between what Joe Biden said and Robs comparison.

Rob is comparing apples to oranges.

  • docdave

Spending is allowed for the “general welfare.” It may or may not be sound policy, but it is not unconstitutional

Au contraire, hawk. The ‘general welfare’ reference ONLY appearing in the preamble is not an integral part of the provisions of the constitution. Any fool should know that the intent of the constitution was to LIMIT the power of the central government not give it a blank check (like the statement ‘general welfare’ implies) to do what ever it please.

  • http://sayanythingblog.com/ likwidshoe

No no no Rob. The statement was meant for people who don’t wish to be taxed more. It didn’t apply to tax cheats.

At least, that is the leftist spin on it. Ain’t hypocrisy fun?

  • http://www.sayanythingblog.com/ electnixon

You guys don’t understand: Biden was only talking about Republicans paying more tax. Everyone knows that he didn’t expect Democrats to pay taxes. /sarcasm

  • NoJelly

Why do conservatives have such a problem remembering the double standard of the Left? The Left certainly has no problem with it…

This is SOP. Even Dems I know with a semblage of sense go out of their way to justify criminal behavior in their leadership. Other than supporting blatent crooks holding power in their name, I see no advantage to it.

    Looking stupid is looking stupid.

  • http://theartofcoverthypnosis.com/ JosephWarinton

I don’t know if paying less taxes is “unpatriotic”. Sounds more like a knee jerk, emotional statement to get people to submit themselves to the government more. If taxes are well spent, and are spent in a manner that the people choose, then paying more taxes would be justified. Until then however, how on earth would it be patriotic to pay more taxes to fund ideals which the majority of people do not support? That’s unpatriotic in itself.

  • SigFan

Wesley Snipes get three years in prison, Tim Geithner gets four years as US Treasury Secretary. Not sure which is the worse sentence, but it does seem a little unbalanced.

  • robert108

Biden and the lefties have it exactly backwards. What is “patriotic” is following the Constitution and the founding principles, which says clearly that govt is limited, and therefore its power to tax us is also limited. In fact, it’s patriotic to not pay taxes which are assessed for non-Constitutional purposes, like the vast majority of social spending.

  • Hannitized

    I was talking about Daschle.

And you’re spinning your head off. “Biden only meant this to apply to people who didn’t want higher taxes.” You know, then it applies to people who don’t want to pay WHAT THEY OWE TOO.

Not even. Stating that you don’t want your taxes raised is a totally different complaint to either say you didn’t know something was considered taxable, or arguing that something shouldn’t be taxable.

If I said, sure, I don’t mind paying a higher rate of tax, but I don’t believe I owe money for that limo that was provided to me as a luxury, those are two totally separate statements.

But, you are more interested in being partisan and emotional than looking at this honestly.

The remark was not meant to apply to people who didn’t realize they were supposed to pay taxes on something

Reagan used to keep jelly beans in the Oval Office. Obama must keep a jar of ginkgo biloba! Funny how all these guys who either wrote or enforced tax laws “didn’t realize” they were supposed to pay all their taxes until suddenly they were looking at cabinet appointments. Then they suddenly “remembered”!

As usual, your argument strains credulity.

  • http://www.willisms.com/ Zsa Zsa

What is really bad is Tim Geithner !!!

  • Mickey

I have never been given a legitimate reason to ever stop calling Democrats unpatriotic.

  • 2Hotel9

Daschle has been deeply involved in WRITING tax code, so he can not plead ignorance.

  • http://www.dartemis.net/blog/ sayanything-42

    Proof,

No fool like a credulous fool!

  • http://insanereindeer.blogspot.com/ Kenny

There are no “honest mistakes” in politics. There is criminality and there is ineptitude. Anyone willing to give $200,000 passes to criminals like Daschel making “honest mistakes” are just plain foolhardy.
They will “honestly mistake” us into a depression.

I can believe in an honest mistake. An honest mistake is when you owe 4500 and you pay 4372. That’s an easy to make mistake and can be attributed to your software, your misunderstanding of the tax code, etc. Not payinga dime in taxes for years is tax evasion. Taking money from your company to pay taxes…and then not paying the taxes, is blatant fraud.

Govt is supposed to be limited. BUT with our new Socialist POTUS hopes for tax paid Abortions etc…, it is bound to be limitless. (IF he gets his way?)

  • http://magyartruth.blogspot.com/ Chief RZ

Anyone who makes comments like this may not understand personal responsibility.

What difference does it make if the top tax rate is 95% or 35% if the person does not pay their taxes. Following a law is an individual decision and responsibility. You can not force someone to pay taxes, or work while in jail, or work period. That is the disconnect that Democrats do not understand or refuse to acknowledge.

didn’t realize they were supposed to pay taxes on something

sounds like “what the definition of is is” or ~ there is no controlling agency ~ or ~ I just found the documents on the kitchen table (after “looking” for them for seven years)

I pay my taxes. You should pay yours and Democrats should pay theirs, especially public “servants”.

  • 2Hotel9

No, Rob. It is time for Americans to follow their elected leaders, Democrats, and not pay taxes.
