Six North Dakota Legislators Spent $30,000 To Attend Obama Inauguration

North Dakota is not in the same economic condition the rest of the state is. Our economy is still humming along, and the tax revenues (though diminished of late) continue to flow into state coffers.
But even given the relative health of the state’s economy, there’s no excuse for this:

Legislative travel records indicate that six North Dakota legislators attended President Barack Obama’s inauguration in 2009 and were reimbursed by the state.
Among those in attendance were Democratic Rep. Elliot Glassheim (Grand Forks), Republican Senator Tony Grindberg (Fargo), Republican Senator Ray Holmberg (Grand Forks), Democratic Senator Aaron Krauter (Regent), Democratic Senator John Warner (Ryder) and Democratic Rep. Lonnie Winrich (Grand Forks). …
The six legislators who went to the Inauguration of President Barrack Obama rang up a bill of $30,100.02. Two of the legislators (Sen. Krauter and Sen. Warner) submitted reimbursement for per diem on their reimbursement forms after the trip. Both were paid their salary.

That last bit is important, because according to the Legislative Counsel these legislators were not to be paid their per diem (salary) during this trip. But they were paid otherwise.
What’s more, look at the amount that was paid. Six legislators at roughly $30,000 each is $5,000 for each person. For what amounts to a sight-seeing trip to Washington DC.
That’s an incredible amount of money, especially considering that Expedia is selling DC travel packages, including a hotel room blocks from the capitol, for $486 per person.
The legislators who were paid their salary need to give that money back. And all of these legislators need to be held accountable for abuse of taxpayer funding.

Besides your juvenile attempts at “everybody does it” rationalization, neither President Bush or President Reagan were budget hypocrites like Obama. He goes crazy with debt, then self-righteously calls for “us” to rein in spending! He must be smoking some wacky tabbacky.
He’s the one doing the crazy spending.

This is just plain theft of public money.

    Conservative,

Follow the link… it explains it there.

  • I don’t like today’s GOP

Which ND legislators went to Bush’s Parties and Raygun’s Goodbye party? What’d that cost? Why don’t you know? Hmmm

  • http://SayAnythingBlog.com The_Whistler_ofnd

Didn’t Rick Berg step down as majority leader in the last session.

  • GrampsWithCramps

Rick Berg was the House majority leader but not last year. He stepped aside when he announced he’d be retiring from the legislature. Al Carlson from Fargo was the one who OK’d this along with Bob Stenehjem in the Senate.

One has to wonder though who actually approves those reimbursements. The GOP holds the majority, do the Senate & House majority leaders approve the travel and reimbursement?

I think that deserves some research.

  • sayanything-8585

Would that Senate Majority Leader be the same Rick Berg, that was up in Harvey yesterday, I thought he let us think he was going to be looking out for the wasteful spending. Not accusing just asking for anyone that was there also, if I misunderstood him.

Why don’t you go look those up? I’ll be happy to report what you find.

But I’m not sure what your larger point is. Two wrongs make a right?

By the way, some of these legislators are Republicans. Just so you’re aware.

  • sayanything-101

It would be interesting to know how much in various government subsidies members of the Legislature collect.

  • http://sayanythingblog.com robport

No, Berg isn’t the majority leader any more. Al Carlson is.

  • http://sayanythingblog.com robport

Quite right. They ought to be held accountable for this, along with the legislators themselves.

  • http://sayanythingblog.com robport

The House speaker and the Senate majority leader have to sign off on these.
