Since When Is A Childcare Shortage The Responsibility Of The Government?

Thanks to North Dakota’s oil boom the economy in my home town is hopping.  Jobs are available all over the place, and as a result a lot of families are seeing both moms and dads going off to work.  The problem this has left people with, however, is what to do with the tykes while mom and dad are off at work?  There just isn’t enough daycare space in Minot to meet demand for childcare.

Admittedly, it’s a good problem to have (better than wondering how unemployed mom and dad are going to feed the kids), but the people who need childcare are looking to the city council to solve this problem.  I’m left wondering why this is the city council’s responsibility.

Seems to me that the city council’s response should be, if anything, to clear some of the red tape away from the childcare industry.  Make it easier for entrepreneurs to open daycares and more daycares will open to meet demand.  That’s the wonder of free markets.

But other than that solution, this is pretty much a “problem” that should be left to solve itself.

ABSOLUTELY!
People really have no idea what the red tape and the gov’t do to legitimate providers.
There are countless court records of state workers harassing, verbally abusing, spying, stalking and many other charges from providers.
Personally, I could write a book about the beleaguering the dept of state child care licensing is capable of.

IT will be if we elect enmass a left leaning congress and senate. We will turn into a marxist state that wants to redistribute the wealth of this nation and send it to other who did nothing to deserve it.

How about the “moms” stay home and raise the children? How refreshing!

Kansasgirl, I’m sure that’s easier said than done in today’s economy

Anna. Is there something wrong with our economy?
You mean to tell me one income is not enough to feed, clothe, shelter, and provide for the rest of the neccessities?

The necessities yes.  The taxes and luxeries, no.

Rob:
You are right. My question would be why it is that the people who need childcare are looking to the city council to solve the problem. If they want to air their greivances before the council, okay. Maybe they can bring up some of the problems that daycare providers are faced with and find solutions. It seems to me that everyone wants to jump on the gravy train without the responsibility of taking care of their children. This is where you make the choice: who comes first? The children or the extra income that the job will provide. This is one of those cases where the greedy conservatives are more than happy to let the government into their lives.

The problem is that at least half the people who have children these days don’t bother to secure the skills and resources needed to take care of themselves… before having children.

Part of it is the whole “it takes a village” attitude that has been in the mainstream for the last 30 years.

Raising a child takes these things:

A father who is responsible enough to take care of his children, and mature enough to have developed the work qualifications to financially support a family.

A mother who postpones childbearing until she has the skills and warewithall to take care of herself and her children, and a man like the onedescribed above.

Y’all forgot something. Time tested child care givers: Grandparents. They have been babysitting in the past and all over the world. What happened to ours (grandparents)?

They seem to be spending all of their time jetsetting and spending our inheritances.

According to this anti-daycare website, a “childcare shortage” might not be such a bad thing from the kid’s point-of-view:

Whistler I pray that you don’t follow the footsteps of the grandparents you describe. The raising of the future generations is best left in the hands of loving family members.
