Sin City/Batman Comic Artist Frank Miller Gets It Right On The War On Terror

We need more people saying things like this.
Miller’s sentiments may come as a surprise to some seeing as how Miller is a member in long standing of the almost monolithically liberal and anti-war Hollywood crowd, but this isn’t the first time he’s made statements like this. Miller has had the iconic Batman battling al Qaeda in past comics, and he’s also penned a comic called 300 about the famous Battle of Thermopylae between 300 Spartans and hundreds of thousands (or even millions, depending on which historical account you buy in to) of Persian soldiers from the east.
Does the idea of free citizens of western (Greek) city states fighting against hordes of tyrants from the middle east sound sort of familiar? Maybe sort of like citizens of free western nations fighting against hordes of Islamic zealots from the east? The comparison isn’t perfect, but the Battle of Thermopylae is a significant early example of how effective citizens from a free (relative to the time) western society fighting for their freedom can be against the soldiers of tyrants. Miller, by dint of his comic about the heroic stand of the Spartans, clearly appreciates that, which in turn explains his views on the war against Islamic extremism.
By the way, Miller’s 300 comic has been made into a movie of the same title which is set to be released this March. Neither the comic nor, I expect, the movie are all that faithful to historical facts but the general themes of the battle as well as its historical significance seem to be left in tact. I wasn’t much of a fan of the film adaptation of Miller’s Sin City, but I’ve got to say that I’m excited about 300.

You should read Edward Said’s orientalism. you seem to have a romantic vision of the west and a negative vision of the east.

That’s quite a stretch. Did we read the same post? Just asking.

300 is very good, and I’d like to check out the movie. Another interesting work of Miller’s is Elektra: Assassin, in which a very liberal presidential candidate is possessed by an evil beast who wants him to destroy the world once he gets elected. Of course, the incumbent is a Nixon analogue who’s pretty insane, too. At his best, Miller is very concerned with abuse of power in government, which is why sometimes liberals like him and sometimes conservatives do. It’s all about who’s in power for him and why they are failing the American people.

Duality is a good word. Miller portrays the Batman character as he was meant to be portrayed – dark, obsessed, slightly on the psychotic side, and dangerously ruthless.

And, Hotel, you’re right…..literary snobbery aside, graphic novels can be a great read.

I don’t know if any of you ever read graphic novels (a classy way of saying ‘thick comic books) but Frank Miller’s Batman graphic “The Dark Knight Returns” was truly excellent. I bought it in the mid 80′s and it’s still on my bookshelf. A very impressive piece of work.

No, Pil. graeme is just spewing his usual America-hate and stupidity.

I also like Frank Miller’s work. I have always liked the underlying duality, as is also portrayed in Spiderman. It is sad that so many people are unwilling to even pick up a “graphic novel”, deeming them to be less than acceptable because of the format.

Another series I love is the Alien Universe. I was late to the dance with that one, did not know about it till Wifey got me the Alien boxset for Christmas.

A quick note: Frank Miller’s Holy Terror, Batman, his “Batman vs. Al Qaeda” comic, hasn’t yet been released.

300 was quite good, by the way.

I too still have “The Dark Knight Returns” on my bookshelf from the late 80′s. I read the 300 and it rocked IMHO. I can’t wait for the movie.

If you’re Frank Miller fan, spare yourself the heartbreak of reading his most recent stuff. All-Star Batman & Robin is the Plan 9 From Outer Space of comics. (Personally, my favorite is the Daredevil “Born Again” saga.)

I’ve never made the leap into graphic novels, and I’m not sure why.

    I like R Crumb.

I’ve never made the leap into graphic novels, and I’m not sure why. I need to just pick one up one time.

Jim, how was Miller’s 300 series? I’ve heard a lot about it, but have not actually read it.

I’m not sure I’m ready to hear criticism of my “romantic vision of the west” from an apologist for communist thugs like Hugo Chavez.
