Shocker: Obama Increasing War Spending

Remember how Obama said he was going to cut the budget deficit by decreasing spending on Iraq? Well to date, in nearly six years, we’ve spent just over $600 billion in Iraq. So roughly $100 billion/year on Iraq spending.
But now Obama wants $200 billion in war spending from Congress for the next year and a half, a big chunk of that funding his surge into Afghanistan. It doesn’t take a math genius to know that’s more than $100 billion/year.

WASHINGTON (CNN) — President Barack Obama will ask Congress for more than $200 billion to fund U.S. war efforts for the next year and a half, according to defense officials.
The request will be for $75.5 billion for the rest of the 2009 fiscal year to cover the cost of sending more troops to Afghanistan this year and additional $130 billion for 2010, according to the sources.

I really don’t have a problem with Obama’s spending requests. I think we need to win the war in Afghanistan like we won the war in Iraq. That being said, it does illustrate just how duplicitous Obama is being about the overall budget.
He claims he’s going to cut war spending, but he’s not cutting war spending. It must be part of his plan to cut budget deficits by increasing them.

The dems were very much in favor of a situation in which Bush and the Repubs could be blamed for a loss of the war1
They will spend into oblivion to avoid being the ones who lost the war.
A case of saying anything and doing what the other guy was.

    Increase war spending!!!

That must mean the war here in the United States!!
You know, 2nd amedndment war, the more taxing war, the tyranny war, an oppression war.

    LET THE BATTLE BEGIN!!!

It is a “shocker” alright. Yawn.

It is a lot of money to spend in return for just a couple years of police state-imposed stability.

Rugby Moron what the hell you think we should do then? Just surrender go home leave the afghans to be given back to the Taliban?

I think NOBAMA painted himself into a corner and that if he didn’t conduct his surge in Afghanistan he would be going back on one of his campaign promisses. NOBAMA was the one that said we were fighting on the wrong battle field.

The so-called “Bush’s Wars” were voted for every step of the way by the democrats in congress and affirmed by the American people in 2004.

We will apparently carry on “Obama’s War” in Afghanistan.

obama has always said that iraq was wrong and that we need to finish the fight in afganistan.

please cite where he was going to cut costs in afganistan. for over 2 years he kept saying we need to send more troops to afganistan. that in itself says more spending there.

17,000 troops in Afghanistan isn’t enough. When the number of soldiers killed in Afghanistan begins to rise will the media become the ghouls they were during the Iraq war?

I think we need to win the war in Afghanistan like we won the war in Iraq.

What did we “win” in Iraq? If you’re an advocate for a “win” in Afghanistan like we “won” in Iraq, then you really do dislike the men and women of the US military.

I missed the victory parade. Oh, that’s right, that wasn’t one…

    Peace and Semper Fi…

Why would consider this a shocker? Of course we have to send more troops in Afghanistan we are losing the war on that country and we cant afford it. But 17,000 is not enough.

Bush’s wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have taken our nation down the path of ruin. See USSR circa 1990. Nice knowin’ y’all, ’cause we’re all fucked…

Charles Freeman is President Obama’s stealth plan for defeat so what matters his defense spending.

Rugby, what say you now that President Obama is drowning in Saudi oil money?

Then again, you are too Ivy Tower ignorant to understand what’s going on.

  • bustoff

If you’re an advocate for a “win” in Afghanistan like we “won” in Iraq, then you really do dislike the men and women of the US military.

Any initiative that puts our military men and women in harm’s way had damn well better have a payoff that justifies such a cost.

Nations go to war. They always have, and they always will. That’s not ever going to change. There’s a term for people of nations who do not fight oppression. They’re called “slaves”.

Who was the last President who did not involve our military in an armed conflict during their terms in office? I just find it disingenuous that Obama made such a stink during his campaign about getting our troops out of Iraq, only to send more troops to Afghanistan as soon as he is elected. I guess it’s all good as long as it’s “his” war.
