Shocker: Obama Administration Just Made Up Mexican Gun Figures
And by “made up” I mean they lied about it for the sake of their own self-interest.
There’s just one problem with the 90 percent “statistic” and it’s a big one:
It’s just not true.
In fact, it’s not even close. The fact is, only 17 percent of guns found at Mexican crime scenes have been traced to the U.S.
What’s true, an ATF spokeswoman told FOXNews.com, in a clarification of the statistic used by her own agency’s assistant director, “is that over 90 percent of the traced firearms originate from the U.S.”
But a large percentage of the guns recovered in Mexico do not get sent back to the U.S. for tracing, because it is obvious from their markings that they do not come from the U.S.
Really, though, I’m not sure why anyone would think that guns were the problem in Mexico. Perhaps if Mexico had more of a tradition of individual gun ownership it wouldn’t just be the gangsters and the thugs who have them.
To be frank, it’s not the existence of guns (American or otherwise) in Mexico that’s causing all the crime. It’s the illegal drug trade, for which we Americans are the end market.
If we want to end the drug war in Mexico, we should legalize drugs (or at least marijuana, which is 70% of the problem). If we did that, we’d see far less crime along our southern border.
Of course, politicians don’t want that political hot potato to land in their laps. So they just blame the guns. Because that’s easier.
