Shocker: McCain Jokes Are Ok For The Media/Entertainment Industry, Obama Jokes Aren’t

Who would have thunk it?

On Monday, The New Yorker magazine tried dipping its toe into broad satire involving Senator Obama with a cover image depicting the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee and his wife, Michelle, as fist-bumping, flag-burning, bin Laden-loving terrorists in the Oval Office. The response from both Democrats and Republicans was explosive.

Comedy has been no easier for the phalanx of late-night television hosts who depend on skewering political leaders for a healthy quotient of their nightly monologues. Jay Leno, David Letterman, Conan O’Brien and others have delivered a nightly stream of jokes about the Republican running for president — each one a variant on the same theme: John McCain is old.

But there has been little humor about Mr. Obama: about his age, his speaking ability, his intelligence, his family, his physique. And within a late-night landscape dominated by white hosts, white writers, and overwhelmingly white audiences, there has been almost none about his race.

“We’re doing jokes about people in his orbit, not really about him,” said Mike Sweeney, the head writer for Mr. O’Brien on “Late Night.” The jokes will come, representatives of the late-night shows said, when Mr. Obama does or says something that defines him — in comedy terms.

Is the aversion to mocking Obama really to do with his race?  Or is this just swooning liberals refusing to cast their messiah in anything approaching a negative light?

I suspect it’s a little of both.

When his whole candidacy is a joke, it’s kind of hard to top that!

So, what is your point?

Obama doesn’t do stupid things on a regular basis so he doesn’t get made fun of, while McCain does things like fall asleep while attending speeches and does get made fun of.

Do you honestly think the “liberal media bias” is as far reached in your delusional head as to effect late night talk shows?  Even your quote does nothing for your argument. The writer said when Obama does something funny they’ll write a joke about it.

You’re here because you know something. What you know, you can’t explain. But you feel it. You felt it your entire life. That there’s something wrong with the world. You don’t know what it is, but it’s there. Like a splinter in your mind—driving you mad.

You’re not really saying that with a straight face now, are you?

The purpose of government shouldn’t be to do good, but simply to refrain from doing evil.

Again, I say:

“Do you honestly think the “liberal media bias” is as far reached in your delusional head as to effect late night talk shows?  Even your quote does nothing for your argument. The writer said when Obama does something funny they’ll write a joke about it. “

For being against pot you conservatives are awfully paranoid.

The hell he doesn’t. The man is an idiot. 57 states comes to mind. His long rant in which he couldnt remember what the hell he was saying. His flip flops on everything.

You’re right though, none of it is funny. Just pathetic.

And having an alt is just pathetic.

It’s all political bullshit. Liberals (and Robert108) lie and spin and twist and obscure and distract and cheat to protect their guys and hurt the opposing team. It’s like wrestling. They distract the ref while their team mate hits you with a chair. There’s no rule they won’t break, no law they won’t skirt, no crime they won’t forgive as long as they can win.

Kenny on July 14, 2008 at 10:54 pm

This is not an alt for your information. It’s Buzz’s son.

Whats even more pathetic is the Republican support for McCain when just a year ago you would all have been laughing at the prospect of having him as your presidential nominee.

McCain Feingold? Immigration? A year ago you ALL disagreed with him on these issues, but now you’re right on board.

CatMow on July 14, 2008 at 11:13 pm

And the point is Rob is so paranoid that he actually thinks there exists an anti-McCain pro-Obama conspiracy among LATE NIGHT TALK SHOWS.

CatMow on July 14, 2008 at 11:15 pm

CatMow says, For being against pot you conservatives are awfully paranoid.

The last time I looked, Rob was in favor of legalization.

You haven’t been commenting here long, but it already looks like ASSuming is the number one trick in your limited bag of tricks.

McCain Feingold? Immigration? A year ago you ALL disagreed with him on these issues, but now you’re right on board.

Who said that we still don’t disagree?

My point is conservatives are merely picking the lesser of two evils.  You guys missed your chance to nominate a true conservative in Ron Paul.

While I don’t agree with many of Paul’s stances I agree with him more than either Obama or McCain.

Well no shit, Sherlock. These are flawed human beings, not perfect entities.

likwidshoe on July 14, 2008 at 11:36 pm

Just feels good to listen to the Sean Hannitys of the world eat their own words.

“I’ll never support McCain”

to

“McCain is great!”

CatMow on July 15, 2008 at 12:21 am

CatMow - you’re bullshitting.

likwidshoe on July 15, 2008 at 12:23 am

I’m not bullshitting. While I was in Normal, Illinois attending my junior year of college at Illinois State University I listened to Sean Hannity almost daily and he said he would not support McCain and McCain was his least favorite candidate.  He was a Mitt Romney man all the way.

CatMow on July 15, 2008 at 12:29 am

“McCain is great!” - you’re bullshitting there.

likwidshoe on July 15, 2008 at 12:59 am

I appreciate your sense of humor.

Listen, I do not agree with everything Obama stands for either.  I believe every person deserves to keep guns in their house to protect their family.  This is one thing most liberals will NOT agree with.

CatMow on July 15, 2008 at 01:07 am

Is the aversion to mocking Obama really to do with his race?  Or is this just swooning liberals refusing to cast their messiah in anything approaching a negative light?

No, it’s the 11th commandment.  You know, “Thou shall not mock the Obamessiah”.

One of the most important talents for success in politics is the ability to make utter nonsense sound not only plausible but inspiring. Barack Obama has that talent. We will be lucky if we escape the catastrophes into which other countries have been led by leaders with that same charismatic talent.

“No, it’s the 11th commandment.  You know, “Thou shall not mock the Obamessiah”. “

You’ve accomplished nothing with this. You’ve not given evidence for your statement, but have simply attempted some sort of sarcasm.

Now that’s funny!

You guys missed your chance to nominate a true conservative in Ron Paul.

Just as the Dimocrats missed the “chance” to nominate Dennis Kucinich!
That’s pretty funny, too! A family of comedians!

I bet Kucinich wouldn’t have flipped on all the issues. And his wife is hotter. In America, hot wives can go a long way.

Do you honestly think the “liberal media bias” is as far reached in your delusional head as to effect late night talk shows?

It’s called “a conspiracy by consent.”  The people individually in the MSM are liberals, the people in the late night talk shows are liberals.  They don’t need instructions to tell them how to exercise a liberal bias, and in fact are much more likely to be censored if they fail to exercise that bias than if they don’t.

I’m sure this went over your smug little brain,  but there it is.

If he flies his UFO inverted, is that considered a “flip”?

Nominating Ron Paul would have been a stupid move, but this conservative recognizes that nominating McCain was a stupid move as well.

No, I was talking about the issues. He can do all the barrell rolls with ET he wants. (If he brings his hot wife and takes pictures.)

Who says democrats don’t have a sense of humor.

If I had the ability, Thompson would have been the Nominee, not McCain.

Why is it that hot women seem to be with real idiots?

Obama doesn’t do stupid things on a regular basis

I am with Rob on this, you didn’t say that with a straight face did you?

Just off the top of my head, I can name a few that come to mind:

Obama forgets what city he is campaigning in.

Obama’s multitude of flip-flops.

Obama’s clinging to guns and religon statement.

Obama’s record of exaggerations of his record.

Obama’s record on Iraq and even when things are better talking of pulling out to appeal to the left hardliners.

Obama’s more arabic speakers (translators) needed in Afghanistan.

...And the comedians (I hesitate to call them that) are having problems find issues to make fun of Obama?

Hell, they can start by the media halo affect pictures, that alone could be funny.

Or, Chris Matthews tingly leg when he thinks of Obama.

They need better writers, because there is plenty there.

So are you admitting that you’re an idiot or that your woman is unattractive? Choose wisely. Your answer could have consequences. wink

sanity: You forgot the one where he doesn’t know how many States there are in the US.

If govt control of the economy were the way to go, the Soviet Union would be the richest, most powerful nation in the history of the world.

Thanks to Obama, America remains the only country where it is illegal to drill our own oil!
