Shocker: Ben Nelson Flip-Flops On Using Reconciliation To Pass Health Care
He joins Senator Kent Conrad among other Democrats who – despite previously opposing using the budget procedure (which by the way was intended to make deficit reduction easier) to pass a massive, unpopular health care bill – are going to go ahead and get on board with it anyway.
After saying yesterday that Democrats should abandon sweeping health reform in favor of a more incremental approach, Democratic Sen. Ben Nelson said Wednesday that he could support reconciliation as long as he supports the underlying bill. Nelson also said he hopes Obama will lay out his preference for moving reform forward in his State of the Union address tonight.
Back in March of last year, Ben Nelson was calling the reconciliation procedure a “deal breaker.”
The Senate’s draft of the budget omits the reconciliation language. Senator Ben Nelson, a Nebraska Democrat, said he would vote against his party’s budget if it included the reconciliation procedure.
“That’s a deal-breaker,” Nelson said. “I don’t think it’s appropriate to determine the health-care delivery system, the changes that will be there, through the reconciliation process.”
I wonder what they bribed him with this time.
