Shock Troops?

An appallingly sophomoric article from The New Republic ostensibly about the way our troops behave themselves in the war zone:

After a minute or two of eating in silence, one of my friends stabbed his spoon violently into his pile of mashed potatoes and left it there.
“Man, I can’t eat like this,” he said.
“Like what?” I said. “Chow hall food getting to you?”
“No—with that f***ing freak behind us!” he exclaimed, loud enough for not only her to hear us, but everyone at the surrounding tables. I looked over at the woman, and she was intently staring into each forkful of food before it entered her half-melted mouth.
“Are you kidding? I think she’s f***ing hot!” I blurted out.
“What?” said my friend, half-smiling.
“Yeah man,” I continued. “I love chicks that have been intimate—with IEDs. It really turns me on—melted skin, missing limbs, plastic noses … .”
“You’re crazy, man!” my friend said, doubling over with laughter. I took it as my cue to continue. . . .
One private, infamous as a joker and troublemaker, found the top part of a human skull, which was almost perfectly preserved. It even had chunks of hair, which were stiff and matted down with dirt. He squealed as he placed it on his head like a crown. . . .
Funny? Of course not. But many of my friends were laughing anyway. That is how war works: It degrades every part of you, and your sense of humor is no exception.
I know another private who really only enjoyed driving Bradley Fighting Vehicles because it gave him the opportunity to run things over. He took out curbs, concrete barriers, corners of buildings, stands in the market, and his favorite target: dogs. Occasionally, the brave ones would chase the Bradleys, barking at them like they bark at trash trucks in America—providing him with the perfect opportunity to suddenly swerve and catch a leg or a tail in the vehicle’s tracks.

Sounds to me like the sort of thing a member of the high school newspaper team would write to shock his teachers and get attention. Certainly this drivel isn’t journalism.
Because even if this conversation is a real one that actually took place, it only reflects on those involved in it. Not our troops as a whole. Though all of our troops will have to cope with the impression it creates of them, which is the really pathetic part. TNR might as well have just gone the Ted Rall route and compared our troops to suicide bombers if they really wanted to insult them and demean their service.

Next time he needs to keep his mouth shut.

Lik, you may wanthim to keep his mouth shut, but I don’t agree. I actually view his situation is trivial. It is not like he gave away the entire war plan to Bin Laden.

This story is an account of someone’s experiences in Iraq. While I agree that military personnel give up many rights that “civilians” have, I don’t believe the Mr. Thomas crossed the line (if he is military). This is just an account of a soldier being an a**hole (far from propaganda). I am a liberal and this story means nothing to me. Besides, the military is heavy handed when it comes to it’s own with an agenda against the war (if Mr. Thomas is military – Anna). See Kokesh. http://www.militarytimes.com/news/2007/05/marine_kokesh_070531/

So if nothing was said about Scott Thomas, the Marines don’t see it as a big deal. To limit the freedom of speech to the degree you want, to me, is reprehensible. Should it be limited some? Sure, we can’t have anarchy and insubordination in the Military. You and I just disagree where the line should be.

The Democrat Party is incapable of telling the truth about anything that is happening in Irag, but when after time the truth finally comes out the MSM will just yawn, the Democrats will be deaf and dumb and only this version will be remembered. I should add, many years from now it will probably oft be repeated as gospel truth.

The military is not made up of a bunch of angels, plus they are mostly young and so they do not always make mature judgments, and therefore I can see some ass could have said something like this and a few other juvenile minded morons joined in; and if so they need their heads butted together really hard and kicked in the ass. However, I am willing to bet the real story is quite a bit different than this version, not that the facts will ever get much airing.

  • sayanything-4625

This story is so full of crap I don’t know where to begin.

Dogs are considered unclean by Muslims so when I was over there we didn’t see a bunch of dogs.

No Bradley commander in his right mind would allow his Brad to be crashed through concrete barriers, houses, ect. because he would be afraid they would throw a track. It is hard work putting a new track on the Bradley in the track park so you don’t want to do it in Indian country with a chance the enemy might come by and kill you. Also, our Brad had rucksacks, barracks bags, tools, camo nets, food, extra ammo and all sorts of other things tied to the outside of the track. That stuff would get scraped off going through houses, concrete barriers, ect and that would not be a good thing.

I don’t know what kind of helmet this guy is wearing but I did not have enough room under mine to be wearing a skull under it.

About the comments, I was in an infantry unit and we had our share of gallows humor but cracks like that would have gotten someone’s ass beat to start with and gotten worse from there as various levels of leadership took a stripe out of that ass.

Dallas – It seems as if you would like to censor and punish someone who writes news that doesn’t fit your agenda. Thank God we live in America.

Your snark aside, Marines live under different rules. Their agenda here is the same as mine: completing the mission, which in this case is the war. Marines are not civilians, Dallas.

This dark humor, while it doesn’t bother me so much, gets so many others hot under the collar. It undermines the mission. There is, contrary to the wishes of many, a propaganda war going on right now. Scott Thomas should therefore be reprimanded for giving propaganda ammo to those against the war. Next time he needs to keep his mouth shut.

Anna – this guy is a Marine?

  • Dallas

Reprimand Scott Thomas for opening his big mouth and giving ammo to America’s enemies on the left.

    So Lik,

It seems as if you would like to censor and punish someone who writes news that doesn’t fit your agenda. Thank God we live in America.

2Hotel9. You are right. Liberals are good at the indirect attack, the inuendu, the half-truth, the guessing; just like the Dan Rather fake document broadcast.
Later, ~ well if it were fake we believe it happened anyway ~ approximately relating the quotes of the times from several sources. Do not quote me on this.

  • http://www.dartemis.net/blog/ sayanything-42

I tend to agree with 2H9.

If (and a big IF that is) this report is accurate, it is undoubtedly an outlier, and one well known to history:

We aren’t no thin red ‘eroes, nor we aren’t no blackguards too,
    But single men in barricks, most remarkable like you;
An’ if sometimes our conduck isn’t all your fancy paints,
    Why, single men in barricks don’t grow into plaster saints;

  • 2Hotel9

This same crap is what was pulled in the late ’60s on our troops. You find examples of morons acting like jackasses and plaster all troops with it. Or, as would seem indicated by the messhall story, just make it up. Talking among themselves I could see them not being called on it. People talk about some weird assed things. Shouting it in a crowded messhall? No. Pvs Shitforbrains and Loudmouth would find themselves at rigid attention, receiving the ass chewing of a lifetime right in the middle of that messhall. That is if one of said wounded fem’s team mates had not simply walk to their table and started smacking the crap out of them.

Expect to see more of this, it is already showing up in TV shows and movies.

  • k_lunch

That’s disgusting and I would assume that the private with the skull is posturing himself for a section 8, nothing more nothing less.

  • http://sayanythingblog.com/readers/author/Anna/ Anna

It’s real. Read the entire story and it’s very plausible. Just don’t follow Rob’s link because you have to join to read the full write up. :)
    Entire story here
There is no excuse for this … it is horrid to say the least. These guys are adults dealing with heinous situations and they have chosen to cope in childish ways. Most groups that deal with trauma use humor to prevent the shock of inhumanity taking over the cognitive processes. Never do we belittle or use cruelty to others as ways to cope. These guys needed to be reprimanded or counseled because apparently they have some mentality issues to address.

  • 2Hotel9

I figured it for BS, simply because very, VERY few troops would do some shit like that. I am sure that there are some out there, some seriously screwed up people everywhere.

And you can have some bad looking injuries and remain on light duty, and I doubt any troop, male or female, who would remain with their unit after being wounded would sit silent and ignore such stupidity.

More yellow journalism from the left, as usual.

  • http://sayanythingblog.com/ likwidshoe

Soldiers in a war zone engaging in dark humor?

    Color me shocked.

In any regard – who cares? It’s fucking war. Soldiers are going to laugh at the stupidest and silliest shit just to keep going. It’s normal and it is no big deal.

  • http://sayanythingblog.com/ likwidshoe

These guys needed to be reprimanded or counseled because apparently they have some mentality issues to address.

    Yeah right.

These guys are just blowing off steam. If anything, they need to be reminded that some hot-shot reporter could be around that will undermine their mission. You want a reprimand? Reprimand Scott Thomas for opening his big mouth and giving ammo to America’s enemies on the left.

  • http://www.bikebubba.blogspot.com/ Robert Perry

Are we really to believe that the Army would keep a woman in need of major reconstructive surgery in a war zone, where she would eat in the mess hall? My BS detector is screaming here….sorry, but this kind of thing gets you a trip stateside in a heartbeat, and then an honorable discharge and such.

  • 2Hotel9

gavie, we killed your God, Socialism. Now to kill your fallback God, Satan in the guise of Wahabi Islam. And we don’t care who sees. Some of your heroes died overnight, when the IED factory in which they were making bombs to kill children and women was taken out by Iraqi Army troops. Lead to it by civilians in the village. You, gavie, are losing. And we want the entire world to watch as you strangle on your anti-human bile and hatred.

  • dallas

” He well could have received 5-7 years close confinement.”

    Again….in your saucy dreams.

You are still dodging the point I was making to Likwidshoe….about the topic of this thread (the post that you were commenting about).

I can understand why you want to change the subject and run with a sidebar, people with no point tend to do that.

  • Dallas

Because even if this conversation is a real one that actually took place, it only reflects on those involved in it. Not our troops as a whole.

    Agreed.

    Certainly this drivel isn’t journalism.

    Rob,

That could be debated. I personally think this is not much of a story other than showing some people are assholes. That could be done a million times; some people are asses…not news. However, if the story was about how war can affect individuals or some kind of take like that, it may have merit.

Also, I don’t think the New Republic is a major news outlet. The only place I have heard about this story is on SA (with the New Republic link). I will be very surprised if I hear about it in the MSM.

  • 2Hotel9

And Dallas, Kokesh was in issue uniform fatigues. Don’t take my word for it. Go to your local Army/Navy Outdoor store and take a good, long look at the current issue USMC fatigues. Then you will get it.

  • gavin brown

it stands to reason why iraq is the most dangerous place in the world for reporters. likwidshit wake up, the whole world is watching and you cant kill everyone with out anyone seeing.

  • http://sayanythingblog.com/readers/author/Anna/ Anna

Scott Thomas IS a soldier, Marine, military personal, warrior, private, GI or whatever else I need to included for his title to be politically acceptable to some around here :P

  • http://blissfulignorance.blogspot.com/ Anh

I reread the post twice. So what is the problem?

  • Dallas

And Dallas, Kokesh was in issue uniform fatigues. Don’t take my word for it.

    Hotel,

Please re-read my statement (or read it for the first time). I don’t intend to argue Kokesh on this thread. I am simply making the this point:

Besides, the military is heavy handed when it comes to it’s own with an agenda against the war (if Mr. Thomas is military – Anna). See Kokesh. http://www.militarytimes.com/news/2007/05/marine_kokesh_070531/

What the hell are you trying to spit out gavin?

You seem belligerently angry about something.

  • 2Hotel9

There is no argument. He was in the wrong, and knew it, had planned it for the very effect it got. And yes, gently. He well could have received 5-7 years close confinement. He skated light.

  • 2Hotel9

You need it explained, you willfully will not understand.

  • http://sayanythingblog.com/readers/author/Anna/ Anna

likwidshoe, sorry I didn’t catch your question earlier. I really have no honest idea to this guys creditability but, this is what I’ve seen.

Scott Thomas is a pseudonym for a freelance writer and soldier currently serving in Baghdad.

    RECENT ARTICLES:
Shock Troops:(if you haven’t read the entire story I can send it to you)

You, once again, brought up the criminal Kokesh. The guilty criminal Kokesh. And I will continue to smack you in the face with him every single time you bring him up.

  • 2Hotel9

I meant Ernest Save the Army. Too much Sesame Street this morning.

  • 2Hotel9

Kokesh was in USMC current issue uniform, he was treated gently compared to what the UCMJ proscribes for such offense.

    Get it?

Get it? Or do you still want to dodge my main point?

Kokesh was in USMC current issue uniform, he was treated gently compared to what the UCMJ proscribes for such offense.

    In your saucy conservative dreams.

I will be more than happy to debate you on this, but we have gone waaayy off topic. We could set up another thread and argue there.

  • 2Hotel9

Greg, I was just going to step over all the vehicle hyjinks crap. It was way too Ernie Saves the Army to be taken seriously.
