Send In The Clowns

San Francisco ChronicleThe most effective — and disruptive — protest may have come from the anti-war group Code Pink, which obtained 16 tickets to the inauguration from their members of Congress. Eight female activists, including Code Pink co-founder Medea Benjamin of San Francisco, obtained seats in the VIP section.
They took their cue during Bush’s speech — when he spoke about the rights of people living under dictatorships to “free dissent” — and unfurled banners reading “No War” and “Bush Mandate: Bring the Troops Home.” Police confiscated the banners but did not remove the women.
A few moments later, the women stood up again, but this time they shouted, “Champagne is flying while soldiers are dying” and “Out of Iraq now.” The pro- Bush crowd began chanting, and Bush momentarily paused. Police pulled the women off their chairs and escorted them out of area.
Two of the women were still being held late Thursday — Benjamin and Diane Wilson of Texas — but the others were released after the speech was over.

That’s pretty low. In fact, its pretty damn childish.
I agree with Michelle, if the Democrats wanted to disrupt the inauguration they should have had the cojones to do it themselves.

    &heellip; And shame on Rep. Woolsey for giving Cindy Sheehan the invite.  Clearly this was a stunt aimed at disrupting the President’s speech, and it certainly isn’t the first time Democrats have employed this sort of tactic.  It is bad enough that Rep. Woolsey would lend credence to the kind of vile, vicious rhetroric spewed by Cindy Sheehan but to invite such a loose cannon into a Presidential speech with the clear intent on disrupting it is beyond the pale. &heellip;

    &heellip; The same is true of several anti-war activist groups. Code Pink, one of the largest and most well-known anti-war groups in the country right now, snuck several protesters into innauguration ceremonies over a year ago and heckled the President. The online activist group Indymedia came under law enforcement scrutiny after posting the personal details of delegates to the Republican National Convention on their website. Also during the convention several fringe anti-war groups planned to disrupt proceedings with tactics aimed at fooling bomb-sniffing dogs and using sling shots to pelt police horses with marbles, and earlier in the year yet another group put on some sort of performance/play called “I Want To Kill The President.” &heellip;

    &heellip; Code Pink is the same group responsible for heckling the President at his innaugural speech a year ago (after receiving tickets from congressional Democrats). So, to them, shouting down the President during a speech is just fine and dandy, but don’t you dare try to advertise a political viewpoint they disagree with. &heellip;
