Senators Dorgan, Conrad Resisting Troop Surge To Afghanistan
I wasn’t aware that anyone was seriously considering a troop surge to Afghanistan, so I guess this is a pre-emptive strike against one.
FARGO, ND – President Barack Obama is asking for and getting a lot of advice on what next to do in Afghanistan and some of it is pretty blunt. Some military leaders say more troops are needed.
North Dakota’s two senators are joining many other democrats resisting any troop surge.
Senator Kent Conrad says US troops are already stretched thin and are now facing an emerging threat from Iran. Senator Byron Dorgan also has reservations about sending more troops.
What’s a bit ironic about this is that both Conrad and Dorgan opposed the troop surge in Iraq which was designed and executed by General David Petraeus and, frankly, won the war there.
Now both Petraeus and McChrystal are calling for more troops in Afghanistan, and once again Conrad and Dorgan and a number of other Democrats find themselves on the wrong side of this debate.
As far as I’m concerned, the time for debating about whether or not we should have invaded Afghanistan has come and gone. We’ve invaded. We are at war. We’ve committed blood and treasure to this conflict. We went in with the assurance to the Afghanis that we would be leaving their country better off than we found it. Abandoning them is not an option. Grinding out the status quo is not an option.
Let’s win this thing like we won in Iraq.
