Senator Thad Cochran Changes His Mind On McCain

Senator Cochran speaking about the idea of a McCain presidency back in January:

The thought of his being president sends a cold chill down my spine. He is erratic. He is hotheaded. He loses his temper and he worries me.

Senator Cochran endorsing McCain about a month later:

I am supporting John McCain for the Republican nomination for President.  I supported Romney because I thought he would be the better choice for President. He had been a successful Governor of Massachusetts and was a successful businessman before that. I thought he was what we needed in a chief executive, one who could help improve our economy and create new jobs.

Way to toe that party line, Senator.  Partisanship above principle.

Rob,

What principle are you speaking of?  Please elaborate.

I fail to see how not supporting McCain is principled given the inevitable election of a liberal democrat President and the toll all three democrat branches will take on liberty.  Sounds like party conservatism is being placed above liberty to me.

Well I guess it depends on what you value.  What’s more important, that your party win or that you elect good leaders?

Obviously Cochran felt a certain way about McCain, but decided to look past that for the sake of his party.  He puts party above what he feels to be good leadership.

Clear things up?

The purpose of government shouldn’t be to do good, but simply to refrain from doing evil.

Not really.

That is a false dilemma.  There is another option and that being it is more important that personal liberty not be sacrificed because the party nominee is not conservative on some issues.  The result of standing on “good leader” principle threatens and will inevitably cost all Americans some liberty.  We all know how simple and often we recover liberties lost to liberal government.  The way I see it there is one overriding principle or ideal and that is individual liberty.  Standing on this principle may lead you to conclude some are toeing the party line when in fact it is not the case at all.
