Jim McDermott Has To Pay John Boehner $1,000,000 For Illegal Recordings

It took over a decade to settle in court, but finally the end has arrived and it includes McDermott having to shell out a big, fat wad of cash to Boehner:

A federal judge says House Minority Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio, can collect more than $1 million in his lawsuit against Democratic Rep. Jim McDermott of Washington state.

The decision was issued in a decade-long dispute over an illegally taped telephone call. In the 1996 call, Republican leaders discussed an ethics case against then-House Speaker Newt Gingrich, R-Ga. A Florida couple recorded the cell phone call on a radio scanner and McDermott leaked the tape to two newspapers.

Boehner sued and a federal court found that McDermott had no right to release the calls. The Supreme Court decided in December not to revisit the case.

McDermott is saying that this is a defeat for the the freedom of speech:

McDermott called the court fight with Boehner “a long and costly battle,” but said the million-dollar judgment was “a small price to pay in defense of so fundamental a principle, and freedom, as the First Amendment.”

Right.  Because the First Amendment gives citizens the right to record one another’s phone calls without permission.

The interesting thing I noted about this case two years ago is that the mainstream media was lining up behind McDermott in this case:

Lawyers for 18 news organizations — including ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, The Associated Press, The New York Times and The Washington Post — filed a brief backing McDermott.

Just so we have this straight: When it comes to recording the private phone conversations of American citizens who also happen to be Republicans McDermott, the Democrats and their allies in the media are a-ok with it.  But when it comes to creating a database of calls so that communications to and from known terrorists can be tracked to their source (which is what the FISA squabble is all about) the Democrats and their media allies are against it.

Meaning that, for these liberals, it is ok to spy on Republicans but not ok to spy on terrorists.

Comments

I have seen this already on Michelle’s page.  The best put went something like this:  It is OK to tap phones and record private conversations between US citizens, but not OK to monitor phone calls to the US from our enemies.  Nice.
So who are our enemies?

McDermott is saying that this is a defeat for the the freedom of speech:

Baghdad Jim McDermott thinks it’s okay to reveal the content of a conversation between two citizens inside the US, but opposes listening in on conversations between two terrorists outside the US, if their call is routed through the US?

Well, at least he’s consistent on which side he’s on!

I am trying to picture the scenario if McDermott was a Republican and Boehner was a democrat. We’d never hear the end of it…

$1 million is small potatoes for Jim McDermott. He probably keeps that much in his kitchen freezer.

Liberalism = a one way street.  It is OK if it suits their needs, and bad if it doesn’t.

Unfortunately for McDermott, we deposed Saddam. Otherwise Jim could have borrowed the million bucks from his buddy.

What’s going to happen to US industry when the global warming extremists like John McCain double the price of electricity?  I would think all these factories will close and set up in countries where they aren’t scared of technology.

Does anybody know where McDermott stands on the wiretapping of calls between America’s enemies?

He voted against the Protect America Act in 2007

http://clerk.house.gov/evs/2007/roll836.xml

And he voted against even the House watered-down version of the latest FISA legislation.

So McDermott is fine with tapping his fellow elected members of Congress, just not the people who would kill and maim Americans. Which tells you whom he thinks is the real enemy.

I can’t expect to hear this in the MSM can I?  Hey, if I may venture a little off course...I am from Ohio and have talked with others about McCain’s VP possibilities...how about John Boehner, what do you guys think?  Just a thought.

As I said awhile back, the left is inherently hypocritical because they have no core values. The only underlying belief that they have is that Republicans are the bad guys, and thus anything they champion is evil. And anything done to hurt Republicans is good. It is the only way one can believe that wiretapping American citizens is a good thing, but wiretapping known terrorists is a violation of the Constitutional rights they can’t claim as non-citizens.

Obama/Biden is not change. It’s more of the same.

Kevin on April 1, 2008 at 08:54 pm

JPGR, I looked at John Boehner’s sight and he looks like a pretty good guy.  Is he on McCain’s list?  I guess I haven’t really payed attention that much.

I know Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty and Alaska governor Sarah Palin have met with McCain’s campaign.  I know the architect is hoping for Mitt Romney to be the M&M ticket with McCain.  I have also heard that Condi Rice’s name thrown out a bit but I would like to hear her social and fiscal views first.

Sarah Palin would be a good choice I think although she doesn’t represent a blue state that could help McCain in the general election.  Romney could help McCain get MA but I’m not sure how many votes they have in the electoral college.  I know Rush has thrown out Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal who looks like a solid conservative but I heard an interview where he said he really just wanted to be gov. for right now and fix up his state.

Who knows?

R. Hogan,

McDermott is a liberal Democrat, which means that like any other bald-faced hypocrite, he is all in favor of the wiretapping you describe as long as the “enemies” are defined as Republican conservatives.
