Senate Ethics Committee Investigating Senator Tom Coburn For Birthing Babies Free Of Charge

In his spare time when he’s not busting government waste in the Senate Tom Coburn volunteers his services as a doctor free of charge to birth babies. And that’s got him in trouble with the Senate Ethics Committee:

The Senate Ethics Committee has told Republican Sen. Tom Coburn that he’ll be engaged in a “serious violation of Senate rules” if he continues delivering babies back home in Oklahoma.
Coburn’s response: So what?
“On my own time, I’m taking care of women who have a need, and I’m going to continue to deliver babies,” Coburn, an obstetrician, told Politico. “I’m not going to stop.”
Coburn would not say specifically whether he has actually delivered a baby since the June 22 deadline set by the Ethics Committee, but he made it clear that he could deliver one any day now — and thereby force the Ethics Committee to put up or shut up.

Meanwhile Alaska Senator Ted Stevens is under indictment, North Dakota Senator Kent Conrad accepted thousands of dollars in mortgage discounts in exchange for moving along legislation worth billions to his lender and Obama has apparently been caught porking up legislation for his fund raisers.
But hey, let’s make sure Tom Coburn doesn’t deliver any more babies for free.

I am from Oklahoma and I can say with all honesty, I am proud to have Tom Coburn as a Senator from our state. He has been a thorn in the side of the Congressional leadership from the time he first went to Washington in 1994. He clashed with Newt Gingrich from day one and I will take Coburn’s side every time. He didn’t go to Washington to win friends and influence people. He first got involved in politics because he was tired of the endless regulations our government was putting on his chosen profession. He promised to help reduce wasteful government spending while there and that is exactly what he is doing.

As for his delivering babies and practicing medicine, he has plainly stated that he was a doctor first and he was not going to be in Washington the rest of his life. He wants to keep his medical license and his skills, in order to be able to practice medicine when he leaves office.

Bat: I don’t know; that title may end up going to Nancy Pelosi’s corrupt relationship with TBoone: Five billion in fed money+five billion in CA money. She bought into his boondoggle last year.

The mother of all Senate corruption scandals in the last 100 years or so may well have been California Democrat Diane Feinstein’s shoveling a barrage of DoD contracts at her husband’s several companies (over $1.5 billion over 5 years!), as detailed here.

And this when she also served as “the arbiter of Senate rules on ethics.”

I’m sure Congress will look into any free legal advice their members have been giving.

Maybe the democrats thought a Congressman could only aide in the production of babies to needy mothers, not on the other end of the gestation period.
Proof that no good deed goes unpunished.

I liked the part about everything being done in secret in the Ethics Committee, as if the key to being ethical were to make sure nobody’s watching. Uh-huh, and if you believe that, I’ve got a bridge to sell to you…..

….and methinks this is simply the crudest payback to Coburn, saying essentially that “you’re going to make life Hell for us for a few years while you’re here in DC, and we ‘lifers’ are going to prevent you from making a living once you’re gone.” Pathetic.

…Coburn – an obstetrician-turned-politician currently locked in a close race that could determine the control of the Senate – was sued in 1990 by a woman claiming that he had sterilized her against her will. The incident took place when the accuser was being treated for an ectopic pregnancy, a serious condition that occurs when an embryo begins growing in a fallopian tube. Usually treated by removing the embryo and permanently tying off the affected tube, Coburn is alleged to have unnecessarily tied off both tubes, preventing any future pregnancies.

No written permission for this sterilization exists, though Coburn claims that the accuser, 20 years old at the time, gave him oral consent. Medicaid reimbursed Coburn for the costs of both the necessary treatment and the sterilization even though Medicaid laws only allow for payment of sterilizations in women over 21; the candidate has admitted to reporting only the ectopic pregnancy in order obtain to order obtain to full reimbursement.

Yes, RCB, we can conclusively argue that a he said/she said case conclusively proves that it is entirely unethical for a Senator to birth babies without charge in a private hospital.

No we can’t. Never mind, your points are absurd as usual.

I guess his senate peers are on his case because it shows them up as the phonies they are.

  • 2Hotel9

And what is their justification for ordering him to stop doing this for free? They only want him to stop doing it for free, not stop entirely. So, why?
