Selective Service To Test Infrastructure, Media Starts Scaremongering

I had to laugh when I saw the opening line to this article:

Selective Service to Test Draft Machinery

WASHINGTON (AP)—The Selective Service System is making plans to test its draft machinery in case Congress and President Bush need it, even though the White House says it doesn’t want to bring back the draft.

So Selective Service is checking their system….just in case the President needs it?  And they’re doing the test even though the Bush administration says that we don’t need a draft?  The obvious implication here is that we might get a draft and the Bush administration is being sneaky about it.

Yet in the very next paragraph:

The agency is planning a comprehensive test - not run since 1998 - of its military draft systems, a Selective Service official said. The test itself would not likely occur until 2009.

Not until 2009.  A year after President Bush’s term is up.

So is it fair that this test is being run in case President Bush needs the draft and despite the Bush administration saying we don’t need it?  Or is that just a bit of scaremongering by our media establishment which is always looking for a sensational angle to whip up animosity against President Bush?

I’d say the latter is probably the truer statement.
