Scott Hennen’s New Radio Station Will Be A Real Flamethrower

Here’s a tid-bit of information I hadn’t considered about former WDAY talker Scott Hennen’s new radio station: It’s ten times more powerful than KFGO, which is currently North Dakota’s most powerful talk radio station:

His new station is WZFN-AM and will be at 1100 on the dial. He hopes to have it on the air by July 1, he said Thursday after holding a news conference in the Old Broadway restaurant in Fargo.
Hennen, 43, bought the Dilworth, Minn.,-based station, which is new, for $720,000 from Brantley Broadcast Associates of Birmingham, Ala.
So far, his only sure thing is his Hot Talk program, which he hopes to have aired on several affiliates later this spring. But, by the time he has a new studio in place in downtown Fargo, perhaps midsummer, he hopes to be sending radio signals from his tower near Sabin., Minn., across the region, with a full slate of programming.
The FCC approved the new station, which has an unusually large 50,000 watt signal, he said. WDAY and KFGO both have 5,000 watt signals.

I know next to nothing about the science of broadcasting and radio waves, but I have to think that with most things “bigger is better.” I know that already you can get KFGO in Bismarck, Minot and sometimes even points further west. If Hennen’s station is ten times stronger than that…people in Montana could be tuning in.
Not to mention Minnesota, South Dakota and maybe even parts of Wisconsin too.

It looks like it will only “throw flames” during the day. At night, it will be restricted to 440 watts.

Even thought the night signal powers down — so does KFGO’s — that the same daytime strength as KOA out of Denver, which you can hear forever, even during the day.

Propagation is pretty good in the northern Great Plains, too (Winnipeg and Moose Jaw stations make it to Bismarck), so I’m betting Scott will easily reach Reeder, Scranton and Wild Rose.
