Schwarzenegger Passes Universal Health Care In California

How is he paying for it?  He’s forcing smokers and hospitals to foot the bill, along with employers.

Call me crazy, but asking hospitals to pay for health care is a bit like asking the grocery store to pay for its customer’s groceries, no?  Doesn’t make any sense.

I think Schwarzenegger is an object lesson for this election season, however.  When he was elected he was a definite improvement over the previous Democrat governor in that state, but the people of California are still getting stuck with liberal policies like universal health care because Schwarzenegger is not a principled conservative.

This is the same problem we have with Mike Huckabee and Mitt Romney on the national level.  Huckabee is a pastor turned populist, and Mitt Romney’s universal health care scheme in Massachusetts (“Romneycare”) was the basis for Schwarzenegger’s universal health care scheme in California.

Schwarzenegger’s election in California can sort of be excused because the state was in dire straits, they couldn’t afford any more Democrat leadership, and Schwarzenegger was the only viable alternative.  But on the national level, we have alternatives to Huckabee and Romney.  People with conservative principles who won’t get elected and then try to out-Democrat the Democrats.
