School Officials Suspend Teacher After She Posts Photo Of Herself With Gun On Facebook

Because gun ownership apparently isn’t a 2nd amendment right or anything.

BEAVER DAM (WKOW) — Beaver Dam school officials placed a middle school teacher on administrative leave after discovering a photograph of the teacher with a gun on the teacher’s Facebook page.
In the photo, teacher Betsy Ramsdale is training a rifle at the camera.
Ramsdale emailed 27 News in response to our inquiries saying she “removed the photo immediately” and that she is not “interested in any controversy.” Ramsdale did not comment on her motivation for posting the photo.

Because she needs motivation for posting a picture of herself with a gun on a personal (albeit online) photo gallery?
The reaction from some of the school officials and parents is just unbelievable:

Schools superintendent Donald Childs told 27 News he is unaware of any sinister intent on the teacher’s part and said the use of the photo “appears to be poor judgment.”
Childs said the Facebook photo was brought to the attention of school district officials by a concerned staff member at Beaver Dam Middle School.
Ramsdale’s biography on the school district website states she is in her first year of teaching at the middle school. Department of Public Instruction records show Ramsdale has been licensed to teach since 1996.
Middle school parent Jennifer Buzzell said the teacher’s decision to post the photograph was concerning.
“I don’t think it’s appropriate,” Buzzell told 27 News. “I’m not sure why this would be on the computer at all.”

Maybe because she likes guns? And there is absolutely nothing illegal or objectionable about that?
What is unbelievable to me is how often the right to keep and bear arms is treated as if it weren’t, in fact, a right.
What if this woman had been suspended because she, say, wrote a blog post about one of President Obama’s policies? Or because she posted a picture of herself at a church? We’d all be outraged, because exercising your free speech and religious freedoms are rights.
Well, so is owning and bearing a gun. It’s not some privilege. Some embarrassing fetish weirdo, fringe kooks embrace. It is an unalienable right per the bill of rights put in place by the founders of this country. And it will remain so until the day the gun control nuts who can’t stand the idea of Americans taking a hand in their own defense amend the constitution to remove the right. Which they won’t ever do because, contrary to the perception created by the media and the left, most Americans are just fine with guns.
If you ask me, these school officials who suspended this poor woman and embarrassed her for something as innocent as practicing her constitutional rights should be fired.
Update: Here’s the picture:

If she had merely molested a student, she would still be teaching. Oooooh, guns bad, very bad.

You know the fear of guns in schools is about the same as the fear of global warming. Myths given reality through fear.

Ah, so freedom is only for those who agree with your political ideology, Carlene? That how it works in your “america” is it?

Why should she not show an avatar of her with a weapon? Again, what is “unprofessional” about it?

  • http://proof-proofpositive.blogspot.com/ proof_positive

Could have been worse! She could have posed with a copy of the Constitution! But then, the school district officials probably wouldn’t have recognized it for what it is and let her off with a warning!

Teachers get fired for posting pictures of themselves in bikinis…

I wish my teachers packed heat. They’re some of the most responsible people I know.

  • 2Hotel9

    Where is the problem?

  • http://vdvfamily.com/ Sphagnum

There has GOT to be more to that story…. It is almost inconceivable that there would be anyone with that kind of a knee-jerk reaction to a picture of a firearm that they would “fire” a teacher for it…. but hey, I guess weirder things have happened…

To deter employers from viewing social networking pages, employees might post on their pages legal terms of service under which employers agree to scram. This idea should not be taken as legal advice, just something for public discussion. –Ben

Good God, who cares if she did this or not. I carry a gun, but I must say I don’t POSE WITH IT FOR FACE BOOK. It IS FOR MY PROTECTION. I go an target shoot, etc, but if she is a professional person why would she do something so unprofessional, plus with the libs controlling the USA, she should have known this would happen. They say Bush invaded our privacy with all his policies, wait until the Libs get through with our privacy!

Oh, and what is “unprofessional” about the pic?

Well for one thing, her rifle-arm elbow is down.

That’d prolly have invited a hailstorm of invective from my PMI.

Somehow, I don’t think that’s what got the Edu-nazis all worked up.

There is no more radically leftwing city east of the San Andreas fault than Madison, Wisconsin. The idea that she even knows how to hold a gun would be reason enough to fire her.

  • Carlene S Gauler

Why does she need to show her self with a gun? If she likes to shoot, then fine, but being a teacher she should know better. Did she not realize that to the teachers union, that is a worst offence than rape of a child. She has no need to advertise her love of shooting! She was just inviting trouble or publicity? Not sure which one. If she wants to do this fine, but don’t get upset whem the liberal teachers fine out.

I’m ashamed to be from Wisconsin (more than normally) because of this story.

So it isn’t really news because a school district is being tyrannous, but instead because there is a teacher who likes firearms?

  • http://SayAnythingBlog.com The_Whistler_ofnd

I wouldn’t put a picture of myself like that.

Still it’s no reason to discipline her.

  • http://SayAnythingBlog.com The_Whistler_ofnd

Maybe she was wearing a bikini when she was shooting. Some guys like those kinda pictures.

I wonder if it was a male teacher out hunting if they would have overreacted so?

I’ve been thinking about that. She couldn’t have been naked as I’m sure that would have been mentioned. And Facebook (I’ve read in other articles) is right on top of any posted nudity.

Could she have been in a bikini as Whistler suggests? Maybe. But if so…so what?

    Are swimsuits now illegal too?

  • http://sayanythingblog.com robport

You could look at it that way. One of those two things is a hell of a lot more common than the other.

  • http://sayanythingblog.com robport

Why does she need to show her self with a gun? If she likes to shoot, then fine, but being a teacher she should know better

So, she should hide her perfectly legal hobby from the public because prudish busy-bodies like you don’t like it?

I guess that’s ok. It’s not like we live in a free country or anything.

  • http://sayanythingblog.com robport

but if she is a professional person why would she do something so unprofessional

There’s nothing unprofessional about that picture.
