This is a new feature on Say Anything.  It’s guaranteed to last at least one weekend.  Or maybe we’ll keep it going.

Rob.

What’s going to happen to US industry when the global warming extremists like John McCain double the price of electricity?  I would think all these factories will close and set up in countries where they aren’t scared of technology.

That will happen anyway if we don’t open our natural resources to more exploration and production.  As I have said before with only a few competitors the gasoline market is inelastic which means that demand is not significantly affected by price increases.

Try this on your poll:

If we do nothing and let Barack Obama win the election, the American people will be:

* Far better off with the government taking care of them, cradle to grave.

* Somewhat better off with fewer guns and open borders.

* Less better off than under a republican president.

* Totally screwed, while we congratulate ourselves on beating McCain.

I agree with you DD, but cap and trade will only make matters worse.

Consider the electricity generating industry.  We aren’t short of coal so we shouldn’t see a huge run up in price.  (But it’s already going up for some strange reason....)

If McCain wins will get much of the same crap and the party that should be opposing that crap will be destroyed.

By the way I like what McCain says his tax plan is.  (Too bad he never supported that kind of thing in the Senate.)

However he isn’t going to get it passed in the upcoming Congress.

I’m a little disheartened to see that the most popular answer so far is “I’ll support any stupidity to keep Obama out of office.”

I can understand going to the polls and voting against Obama.  But supporting policies you know are bad?

C’mon.  Let’s not be liberals.

Rob:  That’s just crap. We don’t have the luxury of infinite choices. It’s McCain or Obama.

Pick one.

Do I like this situation? Hell no! But there is no other choice. Period.

There may be a third way.

The party people could make it clear to McCain that he’s not going to win while pushing this cap and trade crap.

McCain said that some guy took him to a glacier to show him it was receding.  He could have another guy take him to a glacier that was growing and recant the extremist position he’s taken.

Of course to do that the blind party followers would have to wake up.  Otherwise McCain’s going to look pretty good in the polls, until after the Democrat convention shapes up their situation.

By then it’ll probably be too late.

I understand your rather black and white view of this, but I fail to see why we need to refrain from criticizing McCain’s stupid ideas even if we (and I’m not sure I’m included in that “we") just want to keep Obama out of office.

A slightly less bad-tasting crap sandwich isn’t a real choice, is it?  It should be no surprise to the McCain partisans that we are disgusted by it.  Deal with it.

If you don’t know by now, don’t mess with it.

robert108 on May 17, 2008 at 09:28 am

Rob:  There is no reason to refrain from criticizing McCain. I did so a long time ago in “An Open Letter To John McCain.”

But when the same bloggers take the position that he’s no different from Barack Obama or seem obsessed with the same litany of anti-McCain whines over and over, then I respond.

That is the genious of SAB, isn’t it?

Yes it will happen. Don’t lie. You will vote for him no matter what. McCain was the peoples choice. You are just throwing a temper tantrum because your favored candidate lost, or your immagined one did not run.

I don’t think Whistler is doing either of those things.  McCain is different from Obama (Whistler said he liked McCain’s tax plan), but we reserve the right to criticize McCain about whatever we want.  And if the issue comes up more than once during a campaign season that’s hardly our doing.

McC is a backstabbing, duplicitous sack of crap, and has every intention of toeing the Democrat Party line if he wins. It is what he has always done, and always will do. 25 years in Congress clearly shows his agenda. Now whine about that some more.

Not sure where you got that as I don’t know of anybody including myself that suggested that.  Come November, we have to make the choice of which candidate gets our vote (of course you don’t have to vote), McCain or Obama.  What I think you are misinterpreted is that some of us have already made that choice.  Somehow you have turn this decision on its ear saying that it implies total support for NcCain which is clearly does not.

Gasoline, electricity and natural gas prices should have (at least) doubled within the next 22 years anyway, it’s called “inflation”. Duh!

Even if it means an equivalent doubling based on the percentage of your bills dedicated to them, if the worst you can expect is a doubling of prices in twenty two years, then he really should have your vote. We can expect the world’s population to have increased by about a third by 2030, leading to increased pressure on available resources - even if further large oil and gas fields are found.

Do not fear to be eccentric in opinion, for every opinion now accepted was once eccentric.

ManofFireandLight on May 18, 2008 at 08:44 am

Duh, that means it doubles compared to doing nothing.

So that would be in addition to the normal inflationary pressures.

Are you really claiming we can do all of this stuff for no cost at all?  How would we do that?  Do you have any idea where you’d start.

Grow up.  Magical thinking that things will just happen because you want it to happen is infantile.

I did not at any point suggest that it would be achieved at no cost.
However, I do have plenty of ideas where to start, like governmental incentivisation of small/ local scale heat and/or power generation; energy efficiency drives; encouraging manufacturers to make more efficient household appliances (with less built in breakability); more research into and development of viable biofuels; more research into and development of solar/tidal/wind/hydro/hydrothermal.

McCain’s plans and the repercussions of their introduction are (most probably) based on current usage and demand levels. There is no real way to know what the economic markets will be like in two years, let alone twenty two. Current economic models are less reliable than those for CC.

Do not fear to be eccentric in opinion, for every opinion now accepted was once eccentric.
