Say Anything Mobile

Peatbog editor and occassional Say Anything contributor Sphaganum has been playing with a new toy recently and, as such, has added a new feature to his blog: a mobile edition.

Its actually a pretty cool idea, so I've done it here at Say Anything as well. I don't know if any of you ever use a mobile device (like a PDA or cell phone) to access this website, but if you do just navigate here (the link is also on the right sidebar) on your device of choice and browse away.

From there you'll have access to the most recent posts as well as all of the archives. You can even comment, which is probably the coolest feature of all, though it would be cooler if I could figure out how to allow you to subscribe to comments from the mobile page as well.

It should actually redirect any of the following devices to the mobile version of you blog automatically when they type in your home URL, no need to change any bookmark or anything.  I thought that was pretty cool.

Devices/browsers that are automatically redirected:
Palm, EudoraWeb,Blazer, AvantGo, Windows CE, Cellphone, Small, MMEF20, Danger, hiptop, Proxinet, Newt, PalmOS, NetFront, SHARP-TQ-GX10, SonyEricsson, SymbianOS, UP.Browser, TS21i-10, BlackBerry.

Yes I got this plug in on my blog a few days ago. It requires no “extra page”, mobile devices automically see the mobile form of the blog. I am in the middle of creating a style sheet for mobile devices because right now the default one is a bit crappy. I would suggest making one like Instapundit does.

- Centered and only taking up a portion of the screen.

When viewing the page on a mobile device, being centered and the width do not matter.  It appears the same from what I’ve seen…

Mobile devices are the next step for e-commerce.  In another decade, you’ll be able to buy anything, anywhere.

BTW, I checked out conservativematch.com, but there seems to be a bug: when I get to the site, there’s a black guy in the picture.

Not quite sure what that means… like there are no conservative black people?

Btw, Rob, you need to edit the path in the plugin so that it reads [Site url]/wordpress/wp-mobile.php in both the redirect and the comment form.

Oh! The cheap Tshirts guy, i thought we were on the Conservative match people still.... Yeah, he does look like me actually.  Very similar… but I don’t remember doing a photo shoot for them, so it’s probably not :-D

Anyway, in the actual plugin, below the list of browsers that it will redirect, there is this line:

$URL = $siteurl.’/wp-mobile.php?’;

I believe this is the only line you need to change, and just change it to:

$URL = $siteurl.’/wordpress/wp-mobile.php?’;

Why do you have your blog in a seperate folder instead of in the root? Just set it up that way and never felt like changing it?  Just curious…

Ah, I see where to change it.

The new host has fantastico, which set it up the way it is.  It works for what I do, so I just never changed it.

The war against illegal plunder has been fought since the beginning of the world. But how is… legal plunder to be identified? Quite simply. See if the law takes from some persons what belongs to them, and gives it to other persons to whom it does not belong. See if the law benefits one citizen at the expense of another by doing what the citizen himself cannot do without committing a crime. Then abolish this law without delay … If such a law is not abolished immediately it will spread, multiply and develop into a system.

I don’t know anything about the conservative match (frankly, boob size is much more important to me than political ideology) but the guy in the t-shirt ad actually kind of looks like Sphagnum.

Anyway…

What do I need to change in the plugin?  It seems to be working fine…

And I must be looking at different pictures than you guys, cause I don’t see any black guys or people that look anything like me (unless I was 20-30 older and was graying...)

Yeah, seriously MI, about that “black conservative” comment.  That was kind of crude.

It works fine when you click on the link you provided, but as I noted earlier, if you visit http://sayanythingblog.com with a mobile device, you automatcially get redirected to http://sayanythingblog.com/wp-mobile.php

But as you’ll see, that link is broken.  It needs the wordpress folder inserted like your link has.

Also, when you go to comment, I got a similar problem but your form appears to be in order… I’ll have to look into that one and get back to you.

The cheap t-shirts ad guy...he kind of looks like you Sphagnum.

And where do I fix this problem you speak off?  You say edit the plugin...which file?  The actual plug-in file or the php file in the Wordpress folder?

I actually write a lot of the posts you see here while sitting on the ol’ thunderpot.

Stop picking on North Dakota.

That’s it...you’re all banned.
